Freedom of speech is right, but one must also take responsibility for what he says I think I remember a quote on this.
?It is easy to dodge our responsibilities, but we cannot dodge the consequences of dodging our responsibilities.?

Free speech goes both ways, it allows you to both agree and disagree with anything you choose. If we dont have that then what on earth is the point.

While they are entitled to their opinions and all that, I won't be surprised if they protest the wrong funeral one day and someone in their group gets shot.

I don't wish it on them, but it's only a matter of time until someone snaps and shoots at them.

I'll have to agree with the Supreme Court on this one. Cutting a road through the law, even to pursue people like...them, would never lead anywhere good.

Methinks Disturbing the peace should include picketing funerals.
People are grieving, and it's not like the dead are going to un-die for you.

Tough shit. Its not right, even in the slightest, but if someone violated the constitution against you you'd be all over it.

I'm pretty sure they have a limit as to how close they can protest to it though.

I agree entirely with the Supreme Court. Now, don't get me wrong, I absolutely loathe Westboro, and I go out of my way to make everyone else hate them, too, but, as it has been said, "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it". Can't discriminate against the minority, even if they are hate-spewing bastards.
I agree. If you want true freedom of speech, you have to put up with the douches and crazies as well as the average Joes who just want their say.

Rather than espouse my own opinion here, I will simply quote the words of a much wiser man than I.

"The principle of free thought is not free thought for those who agree with us but freedom for the thought we hate."- US Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in United States v. Schwimmer (1929)

naw, dude, don't use any reference to homosexuality against them. that'd just "prove" to them that they were right all along. instead, emphasize what utterly revolting creatures they (the WBC) are, and praise God for striking them down. emphasize that God (any god, but preferably the one they claim to serve) hates them and they're going to burn in hell, etc. tell them they're wrong. crush them by convincing them they've wasted their lives on a lie.

This.

Seriously people need to stop complaining about other people "opinions". The reason they are called opinions is because they are not shared by everyone.

..While I respect their right of the 1st amendment ..I hope that biker gang continues harassing them. ...And then they get hit by lightning...and a cesspool truck.

I really hope that they could still get nailed for "Disturbing the Peace"...

Hell, my dad just found out about them and he already hates them with a passion that makes me proud to be his son...

I saw that yesterday and was instantly pissed off, and after I cooled down I realized they do have a right to say and protest at the funerals. I especially wasn't happy when I found out that the decision was 8-1, I mean really? I read Judge Alito's statement, he was the opposition of the ruling, and I agree what he says 100%.

Just to see those smug self-righteous bastards smiling for getting their way was sickening.

How can you protest person who has done nothin to you, did they do it because he was a soilder? That's like the KKK protesting a black person's funeral.

Protesting about the war is all fair and well, but insulting the dead in front of the family strikes me as harassment.

Still, people should just ignore them. They're low, soul-sucking cretins who are using everyone's low opinion to springboard themselves into the public eye. Just starve them of their attention and hopefully they'll dry up.

free speech even applies to these poor excuses for human beings. luckily, counter protesting is protected as well. WBC gets verbally kicked in the nuts just about every place they go nowadays. if only physically kicking them in the nuts was protected.
