Dual classed characters in anything D&D related. You're way better playing an all or nothing, which is no prob for me because I'm always the fighter.
how EXACTLY does one play D&D?

Really?!

REALLY?!

I'm the one who gets to play this card first? Okay, here we go.

Yeah, Gyarados is bad-ass, but Magikarp is a giant pile of suck. It can't even hurt anything until level 15, and even then it still sucks something fierce.

ALL the starting paladins in Fire Emblem (Marcus, Jeigan, etc). They steal xp, level at an absurdly slow speed, and are weaker than most units by the middle of the game. To a greater extent, most of the prepromoted characters. Also, Athos.
The whole 'Jeigen' stereotype isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. In my experience, only Jeigan himself, the guys from FE5 whose names I can't remember (and weren't actually paladins anyhow), Marcus, and Marcus again were really bad. Sigurd, Oifaye, Seth, and Titania all range from 'decent' to 'very good'. And Athos is awesome; you can do the entire final chapter using just him and an unleveled Pent (another prepromoted character). The only thing you could want to give him would be a Body Ring so he can use Luna without a Speed drop. Heck, the reason they give him to you is so that you actually have a chance of completing the game if you get to the last chapter and have crappy characters all around.

Beyond that, the Fire Emblem series is notorious for it's mountains of useless characters. FE1/FE3 have tons of characters with just awful stats (not just Jeigan). FE4 had Arden, Alec, Noishe, Johan/Johalva, and all the Second Generation replacement characters (except maybe the replacements for Sylvia's kids). FE6 had a bunch of crappy prepromotes whom I won't bother to list. FE7 had a couple of characters that looked good on paper, but joined at the wrong time or for the wrong cost (Nino, Farina, Dart). FE9 had a whole bunch of terrible Laguz characters (all except Muarim, Reyson, and the royals were bad).

On a funnier note, I used to have a picture of some dialogue from a translation patch of FE3, which read 'Don't use Jeigen!'

I don't really understand how "all" of the characters in a game could be useless, since you're bound to end up playing as some of them if you play the game at all. This smacks of mindless anti-fandom, which I suppose is a step up from mindless fandom.
I will admit I hated FF 9 with a violent, blinding passion. I disliked, fervently, every single one of the characters and wanted bad things to happen to them. This was the game I meant, with the fully useless character roster, but not useless as in 'has no use' more useless as in 'why is there no button to fill this man-child's skull with ants.'

The comment was not 'mindless anti-fandom' so much as 'I really did not enjoy FF 9.'
Aww that's a shame. FF9 is my favorite. Although, even FF fans don't like each entry in series.

But anyway, even if 9 is my favorite, I can understand why not everyone might like it.

Salsa in MOTHER 3. Oh, wait, you said SURPRISINGLY useless... In all seriousness, he actually did kill a boss singlehandedly for me once, though.

Really, Flonne from Disgaea 1. She's this super awesome angel thing, uses awesome weapons... but she's weak as hell. I ended up using Etna more than her later in the game.

Roman. "NIKO MAH CUZZIN'! LET'S GO BOWLING TONIGHT!!!"

FUCKING SHUT YOUR GOB! I don't care if you are important to the plot, but there is no use or benefit for carrying your sack of shit to another damn bowling alley.

Also, Alistair from Dragon Age: Origins. He's basically Dragon Age's equivalent of Carth pretty much. A whiny stupid little dick.

Because once you get bahamut every character in FFX is useless.
And once you Get Anima, Bahamut is useless (although double casting Ultima with Yuna is a very legitimate strategy).
By that time even if you don't use the summons, once Yuna has Ultima and Flare, practically everyone else is useless.

Especially if you have her Celestial weapon and she can cast those for 1 MP, and do more than 9999 damage.

Don't forget how absurdly powerful Holy was.

Carth from KOTOR. Why would you take him anywhere when HK 47 did all the same things but with considerably better dialog.
Also, HK didn't ***** if you did evil things.
OT:The russian chick from destroy all humans 2. She constantly got in the way, and her pistol was more like a nerf gun that shot pillows and marshmellows. You can imagine my suprise when in the last level her gun is better than most of yours.

The Suikoden series has always crammed a ludicrous number of characters into it's games, generally about half of it's 108 "stars of destiny" being useable in combat in any given game.

Setting aside the fact that only a dozen or so characters from each game get any useage from most of the player base, it's still no surprise that there are many characters that aren't just overshadowed by stronger choices - they just plain suck in every way.

Kenji from Suikoden III, for example.

I was going to whine about most people not seeming to notice the "Surprising" part of the thread title again, but it seems like everybody needs to get something off of their chests.

Do it to it people!

MOST of the NPC's you can pick up later-on in Baldur's Gate games...

...they may look and act awesome, but you already have a party you're attached to and they're really no better.
