This is a survey to assist with a Personal Interest Project for school. The subject I've chosen is to due with legitimacy of videogames as a medium which I'm going to compare to film. The survey is to compare people who belong to film and/or game culture. If you don't mind doing the survey it would a be great help to my school work and any discussion afterwards about the two as mediums would be even greater assitance.

Maybe you shouldn't choose a video game forum to do this kind of thing on... a tidbit bias.

That was actually kinda the idea. I posted it on a site dedicated to film reiviewing, another site dedicated to game reiviewing and the Escapist because it's dedicated to both, although gaming is the predominant media.

Q1) Age:
x 21-25
Q2) Gender:
x Male
Q3) How many hours do you spend playing videogames a week?
x 13-16
Why?
This is an average, my play time varies depending on my current study load.
I enjoy gaming because I feel it's the best way to relax, enjoy fictional stories and settings and is much more fun than more passive entertainment.
Q4) What words do you associate with the term 'videogame'?
Gamer, Fun, Art, Entertainment, Socialising, Mates, Online, Co-Op (co-operative), Brother, Girlfriend (I play with both my brother and girlfriend), relax.
Q5) What words do you associate with the term 'gamer'?
Me, Cheetoz, friend, cool guy, not-a-douche
Q6) Would you consider yourself a gamer?
X Strongly agree
Q7) How many hours do you spend watching Movies a week?
X 1-4
Why?
I find films less interesting than serial media or long lasting media (books, games, television shows.) I also get very bored if I've seen a movie before so I tend to only watch films I've seen before. I don't go to the theatre because it's too expensive (it's about $11.00 for a ticket alone, with student discount).
Q8) What words do you associate with the term 'movie'?
Film, theatre, actor, Hollywood, art, festival, marathon, arty (as in arty-farty, ariy-fairy), film student.
Q9) What words do you associate with the term movie buff?
Pretence, douche, insufferable, hard-to-please, stuffy.
Q10) Would you consider yourself a movie buff?
X Strongly Disagree
Q11) From 1(lowest)-5(highest) rate how beneficial videogames are to people
3
1---------------------------2---------------------------3---------------------------4---------------------------5
Why?
In my experience games have the capacity to give you what you choose to get out of them, the Dynasty Warriors games can teach you of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, or you can kill millions of 'dudes'. Brain can be a discussion of an Alcoholic's experiences, or it can be a puzzle. It's subjective and some people bring harm to themselves or others through neglecting other areas of their life to pursue more gaming time. Others will have an enriching experience leading to introspection and personal growth. There's also a lot to be said for the benefit of relaxation time.
Q12) From 1(lowest)-5(highest) rate how beneficial Films are to people
3
1---------------------------2---------------------------3---------------------------4---------------------------5

Why?
Similar reasons, films are subjective, I've learned from Dysney films as a child, the Hunchback of Notre Dame taught me that I shouldn't be mean to kid's who're different, but I couldn't say, with a straight face, that I'd learned something from Death Race, or Zombieland, or The Mechanic. That being said, I was moved by Schindler's List, I had never thought much about WW2 as I wasn't taught about it in school and this was my first exposure to it beyond general discussion in my life and the knowledge that Magneto had been in a concentration camp as a child I found the experience to be rather profound as it's not a topic I'd have thought about without prompting.

EDIT: I'm not a big fan of film by the way, it's definately my least favourite media, and I think it's by far the least beneficial to society.

Films help document events and explore mature ideas through moving pictures. It allows people to think outside the box and teach them stuff while entertaining them. Plus, they are pretty fun to watch.

elitist, nerd, geek

Q8) What words do you associate with the term 'movie'?
Theater, couch

My Mom, Sci-fi, free-time

You sit there and do nothing. The 2 is for documentary or educational movies.

On the one hand, they're a great stress reliever, incredibly fun, often quite beautiful, give rise to some amazing music pieces and voice actors and consoles look really cool; on the other hand, it's easy to play too much and waste time, and they have yet to really kick off as a respected medium.
Q12) From 1(lowest)-5(highest) rate how beneficial Films are to people
5
Why?
Aside from being the second best form of entertainment, they provide a hugely immersive and entertaining way to express emotions, opinions and arguments. Some of the most influential statements ever made have been made through film.

Age: 16-20.
Gender: Male.

Hours spent on videogames: 25-28.
Why: Relaxation, test of skills, sometimes learn a few things about life.
Associated terms with "videogame": Fun, electronics, Play Station, Xbox, Nintendo, PC, immersion.
Associated terms with "gamer": Anyone that plays games regularly (even casual gamers).
Am I a gamer: Strongly agree.

Hours spent watching movies: 1-4.
Why: Movies only interest me somewhat. I prefer interactive entertaiment.
Associated terms with "movie": Action, thriller, comedy.
Associated terms with "movie buff": Knowledgable on trivia, awareness of current trends in film.
Am I a movie buff: Strongly disagree.

How beneficial do I see games: 4.
Why: They have the potential to engage people in a story that happens based upon their actions. They can allow people to explore worlds at their own pace. They can test strategic skills and reflexes. With multiplayer games, social interaction is a possibility.

How beneficial do I see movies: 2.
Why: They can explore ideas and be engaging. There's also nothing quite like experiencng a movie with friends and family. However, lack of interactivity provides little incentive to actively watch, with some movies being purely about sitting there and enjoying the special effects.

OP, you'll get a better response if you put a proper survey together, probably a bit late for that now but in future hit up Google Docs, it does all kinds of great visualisation for you as well.

Q1) Age:
 16-20
Q2) Gender:
 Male
Q3) How many hours do you spend playing videogames a week?
 13-16
Why?
Because it is fun, enriching, at times educative. Done it since I was pretty young, too. Very varying how much I play, but on average it's probably 13-16.
Q4) What words do you associate with the term 'videogame'?
Interactivity, story, strategy, button-mashing, education, social activity, entertainment
Q5) What words do you associate with the term 'gamer'?
Friend, Co-op, LAN
Q6) Would you consider yourself a gamer?
 Strongly agree
Q7) How many hours do you spend watching Movies a week?
 0
Why?
That would mean that I do not watch any movie, which isn't true, but on the average week, I probably don't watch any movies. They simply do not catch my focus the way other mediums do (reading and playing games, don't really watch TV either). Doesn't mean there aren't any good ones.
Q8) What words do you associate with the term 'movie'?
Social activity, brothers (since I usually do it with my brothers), entertainment, relaxation

Q9) What words do you associate with the term movie buff?
Movie reviewer on TV (don't know why, don't really know any movie buff)
Q10) Would you consider yourself a movie buff?
 Strongly Disagree
Q11) From 1(lowest)-5(highest) rate how beneficial videogames are to people

4
Why?
They are interactive, which helps getting invested. Problem solving, as well as general education (it helped my knowledge of English evolve greatly when I was younger). When done right, thought provoking.
Q12) From 1(lowest)-5(highest) rate how beneficial Films are to people

4
Why?
Generally they can give the same things as games, but require less time, and since you usually watch them together, it makes them easier to discuss. The lack of interactivity might mean that you care less for what happens, making it less thought-provoking. Lacks the ability to teach problem solving.

Hope it helps. :) As you see, I am quite poorly equipped to evaluate the potential value of movies.
