Because it's a means of adding emphasis in some contexts, and has become a regular figure of speech in others. It only has what significance we give it, and my decision is to attach no more significance to conventional profanities than I would to any other part of my vocabulary.

How much do you swear?
Depends on the company. I slightly mimic the speech patterns of the people I'm with, accents et al. So if I'm conversing with a group of people who are more, say, liberal with cussing, I cuss along with them. Otherwise I refrain from the act unless it's appropriate to swear (it does happen).

When and why did you start swearing?
I started swearing around 14-15 when I entered highschool and became friends with people who cuss often. Why? I guess to fit in/peer pressure. Something along those lines.

I don't swear constantly, in fact I hardly ever swear these days, I always have some sort of substitute. When I do swear, it's usually in jest.

I have this on a T-shirt.

I swear all the time, but I like the more esoteric ones. I found out what "flid" means today, and I will be using it in future. A lot. Also, it was determined today in our tutorial that "****" is the best word in the English language, because it's the only one that can really, really hit a point home.

Whoa, who the hell are you?

20,000 posts and this is the first time I've ever seen you in the forums.

Forum Games?

OT: I swear on occasion, but only for humorous purposes or to express emotion.
Oh, I've been around. Well yeah, Forum Games a lot,...

Hi?

I swear in order to release emotions. It keeps me from beating someone to death with a club. I also cuss just for the fun of it, and I guess you can just say it is part of my daily vocabulary. Me and my friends swear a lot, to the point where it is hard not to have a "fuck"-laden conversation.

I swear quite often to blow of steam that would otherwise build up inside me and reach a certain level that it would pop.

As a friend of mine used to say "The silent types are the worst ones".

I swear quite a bit everyday. Granted I control myself when I'm around friends or people who I don't know, but when I'm by myself, I tend to swear whenever something goes wrong like dieing in a video game when I was so close to the checkpoint or screwing up on a report for school.

I swear, my family swears, my fucking cat swears.

For one, I consider it to be better than just kicking someone in the nads when I'm pissed.

Also, in my thoughts, the word itself has no meaning, but the intention behind them does. If you call someone a *****, that's intending to insult, but if you speak them out of anger, like stubbing a toe, or something, or use them as an adjective; "My fucking dog just chewed up my shoes" then I have no problem with it.

And finally, they are extremely well known, and are just such wonderful words, not only for their fame, but for the many reactions people have towards them.

Like you, I never do. Except one time when I was so angry that I said one. I was shocked though, then a little upset that my 14 year record was ruined. Oh well, I won't be doing that again.

I do not consider it big deal, but I also try not to over use swear words. I use them as speech flavoring if you will. Just a dash of swearing in a rant, a pinch of cussing in an arguement, so on, and so forth.

I swear because it adds spice to a sentence when I am trying to convey emotion. I mostly swear when excited, like if I am with my friends playing Halo I swear, but I don't spurt slurs in a eulogy.

I started swearing in 6th grade, but the small stuff. Then I started using big boy words in 9th grade.
