Why do people swear constantly? It's like people are trying to reach a record sometimes...

I'm 19 and I've never sworn (depending on what you consider a "swear", I guess).

I've never / don't feel the need for it. I don't have a problem with it. I just don't partake myself...

So, wtf people, what's up with all the swearing?!

(How much do you swear, and why do you swear period?)

Edit: A new thought! When and why did you start swearing? Was it was when you were a kid, because it seemed cool and edgy, or when you were semi-adult, because why not?
What I find ironic is the part where you say "So, wtf people, what's up with all the swearing?"

And, by the way, I swear all the time.

I admit that I swear a lot. I'm a very emotional person and I guess it just helps get my excitement across, like "wahey, motherfuckin mass effect 2 is out!!" or "christ, I hate him, what a ****!!" I do think that people who say fuck 4 times in a sentence are douchebags, but I don't see a problem with swearing to get a point across

I never swear. Well, that's not true. I've sworn before but that's only when I get injured or contracted a strange disease.

you tell us that you've never sweared, you ask us whats with all the swearing, but here you are saying "wtf," which is short hand for a something with a swear word in it?

oh the irony...

I started swearing as a kid mostly out of rebellion of the fact that no solid reason as to WHY certain words were "swear" words. Sure, a social stigma has stuck to certain words, but their intrinsic meaning is not vulgar when spoken of in other words.

Also, on a side note to the OP: WTF means what the fuck, so you swear in your post. Using an initial to get past cussing doesn't count as not cussing.

I'm not sure why I swear, but it may have something to do with where I'm from. In Scotland, we swear pretty much all the time. Or at least, we do in most parts of Glasgow.

I don't swear much on the forums, though. I guess that's because I never really need to, but I've got no objection to swearing provided it isn't done for the sake of swearing.

Say, for instance, you're watching one of those really immature certificate-18 films where the protagonists swear all the time for no reason. I would find that boring, not offensive. I'd assume it's the writers and actors clutching at straws because they'd run out of imagination, but I'd never assume that swearing itself is a necessarily abhorrent act, so the language itself wouldn't offend me.

It is dependant upon my mood or the situation. Years prior; during my wigger phase, a portion of my life I shall never live down, I could have made a sailor cry by comparison. Since such a time, nigh four years almost I decided against doing do. Frankly I begun to realize the vulgarity associated and excess use simply sounded uneducated. They may be just words and even today I swear, especially when frustrated however I find there are better words and fancy my manner of dialect nowadays even if it is strange for many.

Thus a matter of preference for me, although excess usage and I may think less of a person admittedly.

Hey, a word is just a fucking word. It's funny, though. Words like "fuck", "shit" and "****" feel so satisfying to say because they're designated as being bad words. "****" is perfect for this. It describes a vagina, but calling somebody else a "vagina" just doesn't have the same effect. It's somehow not as visceral. "****" has got so many negative connotations attached to it, and the actual sound of the word seems very sharp and bitter. Maybe that's why it seems so cathartic to say it as an insult, I don't know.

Either way, swearing is fucking fantastic.

Swearing can get a point across sometimes better than other words.

I do it because it's appropriate.

Depends on a lot of stuff. All about time & place.

I often swear (never at someone) on this board in my post because it freaks people out and they start assuming that I'm either batshit crazy or yelling at the top of my lungs. I find it funny when people are listening to my fake tone-conveyed-through-words rather than reading what I have to say. I could post something, then arbitrarily introduce "fuck" "goddamn" and "fucking" and suddenly I get very different reactions. It's quite amazing really.

If you wanna find out about why people swear, watch the British comedy "In the Loop".

A swear a lot more than I want to. I guess I do swear because I spent hours and hours around this one guy that swore every other word. So now it is just a habit for me, one that I am trying to get rid of.

I don't swear at work, it's just a habit I picked up from working at places where you had to worry about customers being offended. I work in the mail room in a large office building and still can't bring myself to swear, unless it's under my breath.
I'm more worried about my overuse of the words "Dude" and "Like" than my swearing.
Current favorites (with exclamation points for fun):
Ass-Wank!
Fucknuts!
Shitballs!
and finally, when I realized the new razors I bought were worthless while I was shaving
JesusMotherFuckingGoddamnChrist!

I swear for emphasis or when in pain/shock. I think that the words really do add a needed dimension to the language. I watch what I say in certain situations or around people who would be offended by it, so it's definitely something I keep under control. I can, however, swear like a sailor when the situation calls for it.
