What is your view of swearing in games/songs/movies/tv/novels? Do you think it adds to the story, or do you think it's a little unnecessary and just cranks the viewer ratings up?
I think a little bit is fine in movies and maybe games, but I don't like reading it in novels, don't know why, and it's okay in songs sometimes. But what do you think?
its never wrong as long as its handled well and makes sense....and if it doesnt ell thats a sign of bad writing and has nothing to do with swearing istself

would pulp fiction be as cool and Badass/awsome if Samuel L Jackson couldnt call himself a "bad-************" instead hes a "totally radical dude"

now if your just packing in swearing to make a charahcter or your work seem "cool" or "edgy" or "mature" then thats just bad writing, I dont find it offencive but its just...bad writing

also as somone pointed out above NOT swearing can somtimes seem jarring and break your suspension of disbelif.....like some kid from a ghetto would angryly call somone else a jerk...see what I mean?

I think swearing is fantastic and it should be everywhere. Fuck yeah.

Given what I do for a living I'll admit that my view is probably a but twisted though. In the music business swearing is kind of a required part of the job. You tend to not be trusted as a business partner if you don't swear every so often. It's the complete opposite of many other industries in this respect.

Personally I'm for swearing if it adds to the moment. Eddie Izzard is good at using swearing to make his routines funnier.

It isn't right or wrong really. Strong language really is a part of everyday life for adults (more or less). People choose to take offense at it. Though swearing excessively is really just overkill. It has its limits.

The idea that a word would be out of place when used in context is off. "swear word" is a useless title applied without regard to connotation. I don't really understand how one would think the use of a word would be awkward if it used right. Awkward or mature content should be considered rather than words. The idea that a word can be bad literally blows my mind.

Some writers/comedians/performers etc use swearing to cover for their lack of talent - it gets annoying REALLY fast! However, with the right timing, it can fit perfectly and add to the realism/comedy or whatever they are going for.

Swearing is fine if it's appropriate to the character. It should never be used as a gimmick to draw audiences without some evidence of real intelligence/wit behind the scenes - I'm looking at you, Deadwood.

Neutral. It should be used appropriately, but there's nothing inherently wrong or right about its use.

Interestingly enough I heard "meth" uncensored on a radio station that would almost assuredly censor "dick".

If the situation calls for it at that point in the story it's fine. Or perhaps there's a character who's very insecure and feels the need to swear loads so they feel like a "real man". It can be used to good effect, but sometimes it is misused.

Depends on the audience, some of the language used in 'kid' films kinda shocks me.

Having said that, I do love me some profanities. One of the main reasons why I loved Paul so much. If you see me around the forum, you'd know that I fucking love swearing.

Swearing in some shows can just seem forced. For instance, in Torchwood, it seems like a shortcut to push the programme into what passes for 'adult'.
