So, i'm from Australia, and the Swine Flu fiasco is getting really bad. My mother went to the doctors with a cold so she could get a medical certificate for work because she works in aged care. They immediately scream swine flu, do the tests and dump us in quarantine. It turns out today, that it was just a common cold, I missed two days of work and failed to do things I really needed to do because the government is too scared to take a small chance. I told them it was a common cold and they claimed they had more of an idea because they were doctors.

I was in quarantine for 4 days.

The point of this?

Has anyone else been effected by a Swine Flu False Alert? If so, what happened?

It died down here in the U.S pretty quickly, though I geuss some are still paranoid. I heard they closed all the schools in a district just because one kid had swine flu.
Currently, all kids that went to Victoria, can't go back to school in New South Wales and Queensland for a week, even if they were only there for 2 seconds. It's really getting out of hand and the government needs to grow some balls.

The "threat" seems to be ignored in the UK, I haven't heard anything about it for a good long while.

I have actually not heard a word about Swine Flu anywhere other than here on The Escapist, so no, there's never been any call for it around here.

Ouch, I didnt have to be stuck in quarentine, but my school wouldn't let me take any classes or step foot near campus for a week. I just had a mild fever, but they didnt want to take any chances.

That was a while back though, back when people were really paranoid about it.

My understanding was it was just the next "look at us, we're doing something" play the government were pulling. We've had bird flu and SARS recently as well, people probably weren't taking the swine flu propoganda seriously so they decided to quarintine some people. Hooray for the g'ment, they have saved us yet again, and now nobody remembers the massive debt the country is in.

Yeah, I think that explains exactly what they're doing. As long as they pretend to do something about nothing, everyone just thinks it's serious. Bloody government.

It's almost non exhistant here in The US now. Probably because we just take the infected out back and shoot them then bury them in a pit.

Part of me thinks this is more paranoia about liability suits then the actual swine flu. Can't say for certain, though.

The flu it's self kills more people a year and the world is getting worked up over WHAT?! For all we know it's just the CDC trying to get people to be more hygienic........ Like that will ever happen >_>

It's not like they can do anything about our real economic problems, they're doing what any other government would do - just wait until it gets better. And in the mean time all they can do to stay elected is to make up some disaster and claim to be fixing it.

We have had a couple of scares at work, which a small community college, but so far no one in my area has contracted it. Around here if you go in they send a swab off but i don't think we are to the point where we are quarantining people who start to sniffle.

I understand the concern but I do think it becomes a bit extreme, the op ended up missing work because it was a simple cold but I think the government van be a bit overzealous with this kind of thing.
