I'm American and I always make a habit of taking off my shoes when I enter mine or someone else's home. Why would I want to track dirt all around the house?
I take mine off if I plan on staying home, but if I'm going back out later I keep them on. I throw on some house slippers because my feet get cold easily, so I'm rarely barefoot unless it's the summer, and then I still wear shoes outside.
