I have enough time off in uni to balance wow and uni work as long as there are no assignment deadlines looming. Which hasnt been that often recently :(

No.

It is a video game. You do not shirk off your more important responsibilities as an adult to play video games.

I don't understand how some people could do this. Unless an Avatar MMO comes out you'll never see me do this.

I dont get how people cant put this ahead of their actual life. They could lose their job and end up living with their parents at the age of 40. How does this not scare them?
Well thats the very very very very very very extreme outcome, but tbh if you're still spending the majority of your time on games at the age of 40 you're probably not cut out for real life.

Saying that though, I'm a manager for a retail supermarket, I use some of my paid holiday if there is a certain game coming out I've been looking forward to, I'm in a healthy relationship and I still find plenty of time to game during the week/weekend after my shifts, racking up plenty of gametime. As long as there is a balance, I see no problem with using holiday for game releases. Skipping work entirely is a no-no though.

I can never play it for longer than a couple of hours - I just get really bored with it. Maybe Cataclysm will change that for me.

[sub]Of course, all that will be entirely moot when The Old Republic comes out[/sub]

WoW (and other mmorpgs) are mostly a time (and money) consuming pasttime for most people. But for a select few people it is a stand in for stuff they dont get in real life. A certain kind of attention, the feeling of being important, a relationship, something they can excel in...or something else. If the game becomes a substitute for the real-life equivalent of something like this you will prioritize the game based on that.
For some people that can mean skipping or even quitting school/work, and I find it quite easy to understand (yes I have played wow extensively, but do not play anymore). It is not smart...but no one has ever accused humanity of being overly smart I guess...

You might not be cut out for a certain KIND of real life...but who says there is only one correct way to live?

Do you have to have kids to have a successful/fulfilling life? Do you have to have a girlfriend/wife/significant other?

Personally I have a girlfriend, and dont I think I ever want kids. Does that mean I dont make the cut? People are different, and have different goals. If I feel like spending my free time at age 40 playing games and enjoying myself instead of taking care of 2-4 kids does that mean I'm not a "proper" adult?

Edit: Sorry for the double post, saw another interesting post I wanted to reply too and found it easier to just press the quote button :\

I have never skipped class or work, never plan to. I love video games, but honestly never really felt need to play one the second it came out, especially at expense of income.

I tried WoW, lasted a few weeks (roughly 20 hours) got to level 25 or so and thought "I"m not having fun, I'll stop now". I have friends that are obsessed with it, but I don't think they'd even go this far.

No fucking way. If I ever miss school, I lose the xbox for however many days I missed. My mom would devour my soul if I stayed home for a videogame.

No, I've only played it a little, but good grades are an important part of my university of choice, and I really want to go there, and because of that, I have never skipped class, I haveno sick days and always attend to all classes.
I'm proud of that one, since everyone in my class thinks it's super smart to "be sick" the same day we've got a test, EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Lately I have been hearing my co-workers talk about skipping school and work when the new world of Warcraft expansion comes out, they also mentioned that this is very common among World of Warcraft players.
Does any one here ever skip school or work for World of Warcraft.
You could use some of your holidays...

Guy in my Uni course doesnt leave his room. He is failing first year as i type... WoW dominates his life.

(the only way you can fail first year is to not turn up. He could hand in unfinish crap and still get through.)
This is so true, me and my cousin went to University same time last year, World of Warcraft has destroyed his life, He went to an old grammer school with a 99% pass rate, Mine had a 25% pass rate, He went to university on a foundation course and was in his room all the time, eventually he stopped going, Now he has dropped out and is back at home without a job.

All he does is play WoW all day long, He had a good upbringing, good schools, nice area and threw it all away.

I apsolutely hate the fucking thing after seeing what it can do to people.

Most of the kids here allready are getting crazy good grades and/or allready excel at their jobs. I doubt a videogame could destroy them.

As for me, well... I'm allready failing bad enough as it is. Go Community College.

I know there is alot more that people do that is very stupid and ruin their life like take heroine or other drugs like that. The fact is that there is no physical addiction which is the part that is probably the scariest. I know that they are just trying to substitute things they should be getting in real life but at the point were a virtual world becomes more important than the real on surely they would have some thought lingering in their head that this isnt a good way to live your life.

People say you should do what you are good at but surely the people with this "problem" are just ignoring other things they are good at because they require too much effort be it mental or physical and instead opt for something that simply takes a great deal of time

I know I cant truly understand what people who do this are thinking but the simple fact that there are people who do it is beyond comprehension for me

Good grades at a point in your life can easily be rendered useless if you do not study and instead opt to MMOs in every spare moment of every day. Video games can cause people to go to extremes which you can see even from the articles on this site such as the counter strike cheat stabbed in the head or the kid who murdered his father with a hammer for taking away his keyboard

I might understand if it's when a new expansion comes out, if it's just for the day.

However, I think that being frequently invasive to the point where it interrupts work/school is the clinical definition of an addiction.

or how about that story on the news about that kid who was about to get the #1 gamerscore on a FPS game(they didnt say wich one) and when the parents grounded him for failing school he took his console and ran away.
they found his body the next day, they think he tried to fall asleep in a tree he was next to but assumed that with the console in hand he couldnt rest comfortably so he fell out and snapped his neck.
Dead because of an FPS, personnally I hate online play, so I can rest assured that this will never happen to me.
well, that and I have this thing called "self control"
