I dont get how people cant put this ahead of their actual life. They could lose their job and end up living with their parents at the age of 40. How does this not scare them?
Well thats the very very very very very very extreme outcome, but tbh if you're still spending the majority of your time on games at the age of 40 you're probably not cut out for real life.

Saying that though, I'm a manager for a retail supermarket, I use some of my paid holiday if there is a certain game coming out I've been looking forward to, I'm in a healthy relationship and I still find plenty of time to game during the week/weekend after my shifts, racking up plenty of gametime. As long as there is a balance, I see no problem with using holiday for game releases. Skipping work entirely is a no-no though.
You might not be cut out for a certain KIND of real life...but who says there is only one correct way to live?

Do you have to have kids to have a successful/fulfilling life? Do you have to have a girlfriend/wife/significant other?

Personally I have a girlfriend, and dont I think I ever want kids. Does that mean I dont make the cut? People are different, and have different goals. If I feel like spending my free time at age 40 playing games and enjoying myself instead of taking care of 2-4 kids does that mean I'm not a "proper" adult?

Edit: Sorry for the double post, saw another interesting post I wanted to reply too and found it easier to just press the quote button :\
Oh I agree with you completely chap, I personally don't want children, my partner does one day, but I'll hold out for as long as I can haha. I'm just saying that if you are still living with your parents at the age of 40 because you've lost your job due to video games, you aren't really cut out for the real world.

My personal aim in life atm is to progress enough to become a Store Manager, then smeg off into the gaming section of retail, maybe open my own store. Okay, my life goals are kinda video game orientated, but I've been surrounded by gaming and consoles and computers since a very early age, some kids spend the first few years of their life watching TV, I spent mine in front of an Amstrad.

Secretly I'd like to have one child, just so I can pass on my video gaming legacy/genes. And if I could get my partner to the same skill level as me, well, I think our child would be born with thumbs of pure adamantite hahaha.

My uncle is a complete computer whizz, he spends the majority of his time travelling the world working for different companies [not sure exactly what his job role is, I just know its in computer tech] but he is single and unmarried, has no children, and he said he wouldn't change it for the world. So yes, I do understand that other people have different goals in life and can have as much of a fulfilling life as the guy who is a devoted father to 2 kids.

I know what it's like being addicted to WoW, but it's not that hard to pull yourself away for a social life or at the very least going to work.

I find it a bit disgusting that someone would take time off work for a game.

Most of the kids here allready are getting crazy good grades and/or allready excel at their jobs. I doubt a videogame could destroy them.

As for me, well... I'm allready failing bad enough as it is. Go Community College.
Good grades at a point in your life can easily be rendered useless if you do not study and instead opt to MMOs in every spare moment of every day. Video games can cause people to go to extremes which you can see even from the articles on this site such as the counter strike cheat stabbed in the head or the kid who murdered his father with a hammer for taking away his keyboard
So let me get this straight; You are one of those protective people who blame videogames for all the worlds' problems? Did you perhaps do any extra reading and discover that both of those kids had mental problems?

I'll try to make room where it is possible but I won't skip any mandetory(sp?) classes or work hours. I need a diploma and cash way more then a lvl 85 char. And it's not like I will ever have time for raiding 4 hours straight so getting anywhere in a hurry is a bit pointless

HAHAHAHA....oh wait youre serious?

I didnt say that video games were to blame for the worlds problems. I would be both an idiot and a hypocrite if i did.

Mental problems or not I was using them only as an example as I was trying to reference something people on the site may have seen. You cannot deny that there are quite a number of people without mental problems that become addicted to MMOs and as a result their life ends up going down the shitter.

The koreans who left their child to starve to death because they went for a 12 hour gaming session had mental problems too? No they didnt if you must have an example handed to you.

I think there is a website somewhere that is a collection of lives and relationships destroyed by this game. People are supposed to spread it across the net in the hope it will save others.
But of course...why would they read that when they can raid? *rolleyes*

I apsolutely hate the fucking thing after seeing what it can do to people.
I think you have to level blame on the person, not the game.
A game should not take flak because it happens to be entertaining, I would suggest the people who fuck up their lives with WoW, if not playing WoW would find some other way to fuck things up, drink, drugs, whatever.

Its easy to point the finger and say "It's all WoW's fault"
