We need more teachers like him. At least he says what he thinks instead of being a pussy and gives cold, hard motivation instead of the usual crap like "Oh honey it will get better". If she cant take adversity and challenges then get out of the school.
Quote for truth

Seriously it's about time that a teacher called it as he saw it.
It's a sixth grade girl..

..

Do you really think that this sad little girl did anything to deserve being called a loser by a teacher?

I agree with the OP, teacher should be fired for being an immature prick.
Agree with you.

The girl is in sixth grade, why do this? Just being a jerk, really.

That was not motivation, that was demotivation. He essentially said "you will never amount to anything," and he was bullying his own student. And as far as I know, that was a public school, she doesn't have an option to just get out of the school, as it's illegal not to go to school.

I had a teacher that kept telling me I'd never become anything in life, no matter how hard I'd try. My class was stuck with him for 2 years and at the end of that, he warned the next bunch of teachers about me, telling them that every single thing I'd say would be a lie and if I 'd ever get a positive result on any test or exam or whatever, I'd have to be cheating.

One of the major sources of a depression that took me several years to deal with.
Would you say insulting the student is motivation now?

-1 Faith in my home state.

Seriously, picking on a 6th grader? Was that really necessary?

Ehh, at least we've still got The Escapist and Between the Buried and Me, so I'm good.

That teacher is full of win, sir.

At the OP:

I laughed when I first read the headline in Yahoo News, but I agree it's going a bit far. Start that crap in high school...only start putting bamboo splinters under figner-nails. I'm sick of all the idiots walking around thinking they're real cool shit just because they disrupt class, godammit...

If you punish someone constantly and without reason, it makes them scared and paranoid. Afraid to try anything because they believe it will end in punishment or failure.
If you praise someone constantly they become a self-absorbed jerkwad who believes they can do no wrong, and will not try anything challenging because they believe if it is a challenge to someone as amazing as them, it must not be worth doing.

there is a right way to motivate someone and a wrong way. this is a wrong way. what happens when he moves from calling her a loser to something worse. like calling her a complete failure at life and that she will never amount to anything... would you let a teacher call your child a loser? over and over again. especially when you kid comes home upset.

Yeah...
This is pretty sad. Now we even have teachers who don't understand the concept of constructive feedback.

what makes you think this is even acceptable at the HS level, childhood development extends well into college.. a HS student called a loser over and over again is more likely to drop out of school, start doing drugs, and might even become a criminal.all because a teacher broke his confidence in him or herself..

This actually makes me kinda laugh. Don't you just love how far the education system in this country has plummeted? It makes me wonder if we/they are trying to compete with someone else and doing every damn thing they can to make it so that the US comes out on top in education grades and scores and whatnot. Even using methods such as this in order to, more or less, bully and humiliate the students into doing better so they won't get such condescending remarks.

I used to have a teacher like that. He would have tests that if you didn't get a 100% on it, he would fail you as if you got a big fat zero. No re-testing. And people wonder why I hate math...

did you even watch the video?
Watching videos is hard when I'm using my phone. Complain to RIM about not including better Flash compatibility.
lol..mk watch it at home. there is an interesting part where it says that other parent accept what the teacher does but refuses to go on camera and say it...

which is odd..

I have an undying hatred for a lot of teachers since the only teachers I've ever had were the ones who would demean students, so this just pisses me off even more.

Must kill her....

Well, I guess it's better to tell her now so she can prepare for it later in life.

EDIT: Also.... whaaaaaah! I went to a Catholic school where I got my ear pulled on by nuns, and when I acted out beyond the norm I got whipped with a switch by the principal, or the paddle.... god the paddle. And I was no older then this girl.

relating this to verbal abuse. calling a little girl like that a loser is a total put down and is not acceptable for teachers to use. It's fine when teachers can say "SHUT UP" or "Get the heck out of my room" because it is a command. When the teacher says your a loser there is no physical way to respond to it. It's not tied to the problem the teacher is addressing. Now the teacher can be harsh when it comes to motivating the students, but it cant be things like "your crap", "you suck", you'll never get better". You could actually say this... You'll never get better if you act like this." that would actually be more appropriate.

Yea except there's a difference between helping a student with a problem and calling them a retard because they can't accomplish simple tasks. Like writing. Except here we're calling them a LOSA!...Seriously I wouldn't want a gym teacher saying "LOSER" everytime I missed the goddamn basket.

I used to be bullied in 3rd and fourth grade by the teacher + class in a similar way for being "stupid".
Turned out that it was a self full-filling prophecy, after I changed class and the bullying stopped I had the best grades in the new class.

If this -20% for being a loser note is real, that teacher is pretty damn terrible.
Might as well be hyped up by the media. Though people will side with the little girl anyway, because well she is a little girl.
Even if it was a boy who would automatically be assumed to be a troublemaker in class was the victim, it wouldn't look good for the teacher.
