do you think this is wrong, i do..

EDIT: I think this teacher should be fired..
Not only fired, but flogged and ridiculed for the rest of his life. Show him what it feels like to be bullied.....
Or just for about half a year. Your method isn't equivalent.

Saying a student's not very bright is one thing, saying they're a loser is an opinion. The teacher's saying what he thinks of that student and she's in the fucking 6th grade. You can ridicule kids when they're older for a joke but not at that age.
You said it yourself: at that kind of age bullying can have far greater impact than it does to an adult. Bullying, especially from a position of power, can leave LASTING emotional and psychological damage to the individual, so I think that a life time of physical and/or verbal abuse is perfectly equivalent because us adults can take it more.

Grade 6 is filled with what? 11 and 12 year olds? (bit fuzzy been a long time since I was at school)

Yeah that's totally appropriate to call a 12 year old kid a loser... /sarcasm.

Well I think that kid deserved it for being a loser.

I'm totally kidding. That was pretty lame of the teacher, but I don't really see what big of a deal it is. The parent is defending her kid too far, such as the part where she said her teacher threw a pencil box and then the other teacher got mad at her even though she didn't do it. That honestly sounds like the kid blaming it on the teacher. But is it really that bad of a thing to do? The teacher was just joking. It's not like the kids don't say that to each other, and knowing 6th graders (I have a sister who's in 5th grade right now) they most likely do. I'm honestly not seeing where you all are getting the extremely harsh reactions from. There is always another side to the story, and I don't think he would have marked off 20% for no reason at all. They probably had many mistakes and as a joke just put that on there.
well about ur statement that kids say that to each other all the time, that is true i mean i was swearing like hell when i was in grade 6 and being called a loser by another kid meant almost nothing, however a teacher is a figure of authority in the school students may or may not respect the teacher but they also know that he knows stuff they do not and what he says are usually facts, so through that logic the student feels that she is being called a loser by a teacher. Especially on a paper where u cannot even convey the fact ur joking unless u actually write ur joking but then its not funny cause ur explaining the joke

I'm still disagreeing. There are some reasons why more punishment is needed for the adult but the rest of their life is just stupid.

all i see in this thread are self righteous comments about what is right and what isn't. the article doesn't even cover the entire story, yet you people are so quick to pass judgment. there's an explanation for everything, and most certainly one for a case such as this. but please, feel free to be prejudicial and self righteous by reading a snip of what a teacher did to a student. there isn't any better feeling out there, now is there?

Quote for truth

Seriously it's about time that a teacher called it as he saw it.
Oh please.

This is disgusting. Maybe we should all start "calling it how we see it" and start putting down everyone different to us and call them losers? This kind of stuff is why teenagers end up killing themselves. Grow up. These kind of comments just encourage bullying.

When I was in 4th grade i had the toughest teacher i think ive ever had. I lived in Waco Texas at the time and so they were still allowed to hit children back then. anyway any time i failed a paper or something like that she would write in big red letters FAILURE!!! on the paper. i didn't tell my parents or anything, but two years later my brother got her as a teacher and anytime he would do bad she would would write something like "i guess it runs in the family" or "why dont you just give up!" my brother went to my parents and we got the teacher fired

Well, maybe this is just me and I couldn't care less about verbal abuse, I mean they're just words and I can take some rude words thrown my way but if a teacher wrote that on my paper, I would probably laugh. It's actually kind of funny, in my opinion. And a teacher is a teacher is a teacher, you know? That doesn't mean they can't joke with a student and I know that even back in 6th grade I could tell if they weren't being serious.

Why are you telling him to grow up, while I find it very immature to not be able to take insults like that. I'm going to sound like a terrible person for this, but why would someone kill themselves over something like this? Verbal abuse, to me, is probably the weakest kind there is and basically nothing you should worry about. There are bigger things to worry about than someone jokingly calling you a loser. In fact, the biggest reaction I've ever had from the mountains of verbal abuse I've taken over the years is been slightly annoyed.

That's completely unacceptable and unprofessional behaviour for a teacher. He should be severely reprimanded, if not outright fired. Kids, esp at that age, need encouragement not ridicule. Note, I said "encouragement" not "false enthusiasm".

He's a bully, good teachers(Like a chum of mine) don't use this angry overgrown man-child technique, and actually help students, you don't have to coddle them, but you do have to explain to them atlesat once why they need to succeed or else they'll be making mcgriddles and burgers all their lifes.
Besides, the girl is 11ish, give her a break. What kind of attitude is "If she can't take the man-child's pestilence, just leave and eventually get caught and face fines and the parents suffer jail time.". Tell me, do you also agree when cops beat the crap out of cooperative suspects?

That teacher is full of win, sir.

At the OP:

I laughed when I first read the headline in Yahoo News, but I agree it's going a bit far. Start that crap in high school...only start putting bamboo splinters under figner-nails. I'm sick of all the idiots walking around thinking they're real cool shit just because they disrupt class, godammit...
what makes you think this is even acceptable at the HS level, childhood development extends well into college.. a HS student called a loser over and over again is more likely to drop out of school, start doing drugs, and might even become a criminal.all because a teacher broke his confidence in him or herself..
I think it's acceptable in high school because as a high schooler, I see a lot of the kids that this discussion pertains to. I'm even in the same state as the one where this "loser" business is going on, and while I particularly don't care for North Carolina (or most of the southern USA for that matter), I still see what goes on.

I can tell you that at my school, most everyone does drugs of some type. While I do none of the stuff myself, I hang out with crack-heads, pot-heads, heroin addicts, and pill-poppers, and I know for a fact, that all of them started doing drugs not because of self esteem issues or that kind of crap, it was because they're bored and had spare cash on hand.

I say that the teachers should be a bit more abrasive in high school because I see most students as disrespectful, disruptive of class, and spoiled/lazy. Maybe a good (verbal) slap upside the head will do some good, because God knows that all of this 'postivie reinforcement BS' isn't working on the majority of today's youth.

Bottom line: While personal attacks are a bit petty and harsh, teachers should be able to be vocal with their students.

Case and point: A kid in my middle school's History class would NOT SHUT UP. The teacher, usually a very nice woman (I think her name was Mrs. Cook), couldn't take it anymore (and neither could I) and she stood up and yelled out, "Jamal! Shut the HELL up!"

Jamal never talked out of turn again. And all was right in the world. :D
OFT. You basically just ninja'd what i was going to type. Basically the youth of today needs to understand what goes around comes around and if you a little shit in someones class the teacher has every right to to grade accordingly. Also some think skin or balls might help us out too.

That drug statement was 100% true.

Want to know the key phrase there? "To me".

You don't get hurt over verbal abuse? Seriously, that's great for you. You obviously have some tough skin and I'm sure you will be a happier person in life because of that fantastic attribute.

The reality is that not everyone feels the same as you. Your argument is completely invalid because the fact of the matter is that verbal abuse and putdowns can lead to extremes such as suicide. It happens every single day. I'm similar to you, if someone puts me down I keep my head up no matter what. Some people can't, so we should show some god damn reasoning and understanding towards these people to try and prevent low self esteem, depression, violence and suicide.

No 11 or 12 year old girl should be called a loser, especially not from a teacher who holds huge influence in younger kids lives. Was the teacher just joking? Probably, but that doesn't excuse anything because stuff like this can lead serious emotional trauma. It's obvious the child and her Mother don't see it as a joke, so the teacher should shut his mouth.

oh ya i agree a teacher should joke and interact with the students i mean my social 30 teacher in high school made class awesome, but i still think that this kind of "joking" should be left to high school teacher or higher levels of educational institutions. as i said before elementary school is a very impressionable time for kids situations like this can make kids have more contempt for school(i mean more than normal) and eventually that could lead them to failure in school. you may have been able to handle teasing in elementary school but some student cannot.

This teacher has no right calling a student a loser, this teacher needs to be fired.. No adult has a right to treat a child like that, North Carolina residents need to step up and make sure he gets his lisence revoked.

It's a terrible thing.

But I still laughed. I guess it's cause I go to an under funded private school, where certain people get yelled at for being stupid repeatedly on a daily basis.

I would have much preferred my teachers be the assholes and the other students be the supportive ones. Probably because I lived in the alternate universe where the opposite was true.

In the end it is up to us to decide how the comments of others effect us. We can choose to let them destroy us or choose to grow. Unfortunately we in the US appear to have hardcoded people to buckle anytime someone harasses them.

School was shit for me till I realized that option and started enjoying who I was. Highschool was a friggen breeze after that.

When a teacher sugar coats reality you are left hitting the real world at 18 an incompetent boob. I mean like an idiot...not the...you know...boob.

It's sure going to be awesome for all the other classes that become even more overfilled because of the sensationalizing of the event.

Yeah I had a chemistry professor who would call people stupid in class in front of everyone. she was an inspiration :). I worked extra hard to impress her (she had a lot of character) and ended up memorizing the whole damn periodic table.

One of her best quotes was "If you think my class is hard you should give up on college." I went into community college and thought she was a liar then I hit a university and about halfway through the first quarter I thought "Holy shit she was right!"

Turns out I found out later she has a disorder where she's in constant pain, it has nothing to do with her personality (according to her), but it added to her awesomeness.

If it makes any difference to my point I think her harsh ass demeanor is one of the most powerful driving forces that got me to succeed in college and get a good job. Between her and my AP history teacher who basically called me a jackass on a daily basis (He'd say it in a much more sophisticated manner) I'd never have become who I am or met the wonderful woman that I have.

They both deserve medals.

We need more teachers that are like House basically...
