in case it's not sarcasm, do you seriously think they all did it for the hats?
gamers have done more for less (example: paying 15 dollars just to have multiplayer maps and nothing else)
come on, don't bring Call of Duty here

let's not compare milking gamers with giving gamers an actual purpose to do something

in case you may be wondering, I'm not criticizing you or your opinion

If Valve had released hats for $99 that were unrelated to anything,
I'm pretty sure almost no one would have bought them.

It's easy to be cynical on the internet, where people are generally jerks,
But if you travel a bit, you may find that there are more genuinely *good* people in the world than you expected. That's been my experience.

The hats cost far more than people would pay if it wasn't for a good cause. I imagine some just wanted bragging rights, but this is mostly an act of charity. Having said that, it does speaks volumes about Valve that even though they are a business they understand the responsibly that comes with wealth.

Jeez, where did all my misanthropy go for a second there? Never mind I am sure it'll mend the next time I see somebody do something utterly stupid, probably in about 5 mins.

well i'm only criticizing the majority of the community, not company or the cause, because the donations are great, but the motivations behind them are selfish (referring to the community)

I'd never pay a hundred bucks for a hat in real life (I prefer hoodies) but dam, if I had that kind of money.
Actually, I already gave to the red cross but I think I could afford "Humanitarian Hackimaki" for $7.99. I just can't get to my account at the moment.
... We could send Medic to Fukushima. It would break Heavy's heart but still, those firefighters deserve to come home
Send Heavay to, I bet radiation couldnt fight him and win.

$99:99? Really? It is for a great cause but you think the average guy can throw that kind of cash around?
Perhaps not, that's why they give you the $8 and $20 options. I'm sure the average guy can afford the equivalent of £4 or £10. Not really sure what issue you have with it.

The money still went there, so what does it matter either way?
i only give props to valve, not the community.

... The community donated the money.
for hats. they may as well be buying them from the store. people shouldn't need incentive to donate.
Oh please, are you shitting me? You get a red nose on Red Nose day, a poppy for Rememberance Day, cakes at school fetes. Hundreds of appeals use token incentives, and they're a little way to help encourage people, often by giving them something that will let them show that they have donated. This is the exact same thing, you can't just simply discount all of the people who donated because you have a narrow-minded view of a specific community.

or maybe it was a little reward to show your contribution?

my point is, if it was just for the hats, I don't think the community would be stupid enough pay US$100 for a nicely shaped bunch of polygons when they could just head to FPSBanana and download them

Thing I don't get is that Valve do this which is effectively having other people donate money and get a little reward for it so Valve aren't really spending anything yet a little company does a facebook thing to raise some awareness for themselves whilst donating money out of their own pocket and they get slammed for it, where is the fairness in that?

Not saying Valve did a bad thing but still annoys me.

I brought the eight dollar hat because it's what I could afford, and every little bit counts.

But three hundred thousand raised towards the $309 billion in damages is hardly a 'huge success'.

Now just watch as someone tries to explain how this means Valve and their fans are evil and/or greedy.

EDIT: Oh look, someone already has. How cute.

"All proceeds (net of applicable taxes) will go directly towards the Japanese disaster relief fund that the American Red Cross has set up."

I guess you and all the Valve haters missed this part from the TF2 Blog that announced the idea in the first place.. That was the whole point. Charities do little incentives for you when you donate. Thats all Valve did. Buy this hat and we'll donate the money to charity. What's so fanboyish about that?

I've never bought a hat from TF2 before because I thought it was a waste of potential college tuition, but I decided to buy some of these just because it was a charity.

I don't get why people assume Valve didn't donate anything themselves. I imagine most of them did, since they cared enough about the situation in Japan to do this. They just don't needlessly flaunt the fact that they've donated.

I can guarantee over half of those people only did it for the hats, not for the dying people in Japan. Shit's sad.

I suppose whatever helps is good, though.

I think it was more 'look how much we care! man, this publicity is awesome' than 'look how much we care!'.

I always thought their pricing for small digital trinkets was absurd, but at least now your conscience won't scream as loud as your wallet.

Maybe Valve should always donate a portion of proceeds to a select charity decided by Steam user votes. Given the virtually nonexistent production cost and bloated amount of profits made so far for both the modelers and Valve, cutting a little off the side to better the world would be nice.
