gamers have done more for less (example: paying 15 dollars just to have multiplayer maps and nothing else)

let's not compare milking gamers with giving gamers an actual purpose to do something

If Valve had released hats for $99 that were unrelated to anything,
I'm pretty sure almost no one would have bought them.

It's easy to be cynical on the internet, where people are generally jerks,
But if you travel a bit, you may find that there are more genuinely *good* people in the world than you expected. That's been my experience.

The hats cost far more than people would pay if it wasn't for a good cause. I imagine some just wanted bragging rights, but this is mostly an act of charity. Having said that, it does speaks volumes about Valve that even though they are a business they understand the responsibly that comes with wealth.

Jeez, where did all my misanthropy go for a second there? Never mind I am sure it'll mend the next time I see somebody do something utterly stupid, probably in about 5 mins.

Perhaps not, that's why they give you the $8 and $20 options. I'm sure the average guy can afford the equivalent of £4 or £10. Not really sure what issue you have with it.

Oh please, are you shitting me? You get a red nose on Red Nose day, a poppy for Rememberance Day, cakes at school fetes. Hundreds of appeals use token incentives, and they're a little way to help encourage people, often by giving them something that will let them show that they have donated. This is the exact same thing, you can't just simply discount all of the people who donated because you have a narrow-minded view of a specific community.

I guess you and all the Valve haters missed this part from the TF2 Blog that announced the idea in the first place.. That was the whole point. Charities do little incentives for you when you donate. Thats all Valve did. Buy this hat and we'll donate the money to charity. What's so fanboyish about that?

I've never bought a hat from TF2 before because I thought it was a waste of potential college tuition, but I decided to buy some of these just because it was a charity.

I always thought their pricing for small digital trinkets was absurd, but at least now your conscience won't scream as loud as your wallet.

Maybe Valve should always donate a portion of proceeds to a select charity decided by Steam user votes. Given the virtually nonexistent production cost and bloated amount of profits made so far for both the modelers and Valve, cutting a little off the side to better the world would be nice.
