why? I don't really understand why people buy them.
isn't just a waste of money that could be used to buy something? like a actual game or something.
could somebody please explain this to me.

Tee hee, I was watching Yahtzees review just now and I have to fully agree with him. Use all that time and money for actual gameplay DLC. Well valve know what their doing, so I'll just shut up.

This should explain it to you
That was awesome.

OT: Hats were originally added as a hard to obtain bonus, which made the community obsessed with them, which gave valve a huge retail oppurtunity.

I have no idea why people buy anything in that game. I've earned all my hats and items the old fashioned way... idling!

Not really, but you can get most of that stuff with enough time and luck through random drops, achievements and crafting.

My counter-question is, why would you care? If you don't want to buy them, don't buy them. It doesn't lessen your enjoyment in any way if other people do.

People usually want to stand out among others. How do you do that when everyone looks the same(Within the 9 classes, mind)? You put a hat on your player model. [sub]Yay hats![/sub]
Some hats are harder to find/craft, which makes them more special. You can earn them the hard way, IE just hoping one day you'll find one, or the lazyman's way, IE buying them.

I never bought any hats though, I'm too broke for that.

It does lessen the enjoyment when every server turns into an auction house for hats instead of bloddy gameplay

I don't really understand all the hoopla either. The only reason why the hats are so desperately sought-after is because they're rare. I think it's absurd how people are willing to spend $5-$20 for a hat at the MannCo. Store. Even more absurd is the black market that's sprung up around this, with players creating duplicate accounts just to sell them later for money.

If I was in charge I would have just made all items unlockable right away to avoid this nonsense. I guess the prospect of making some easy money (while dividing the player base) was a temptation even Valve couldn't pass up.

I think it's strange people pay for the content that can (usually) be earned for free.
However, if some people want to buy them, they can. Why should I care? Plus, it's a great business model, since then Valve can release the important stuff like maps for free. There's a reason most studios don't still have a dedicated team for a game over three years old. Hell, BlOps players recently got offered a map pack for $15.
Plus, hats are awesome.

It's not just 5-20$ anymore. There was this "special rare" sam hat from the sam&max game launch. It was sold in an auction for around 2000$ i think. Others sold for for something around 500$ too.

Some people really want to show off hats. If they are willing to spend real money on a fictional item which does nothing (not talking about the charity raising hats), then I see no reason not to let them do it.

You're talking about the trading system. And I do agree that it should be changed, as it shouldn't interfere with gameplay.

However, what I was talking about was the idea of people buying in-game vanity items with real-life money.

Every time I play TF2 I rarely see trading going on, just depends on the server

OT: Think of it this way, I could play x number of hours to gain y number of items and craft that hat/weapon that I really want .... or pay to get it instantly. How many cases have you done that in RL? Ready meals/take aways are the most simple example that I can think of, you can cook but cba to take the time so you buy/order. It's just a case of paying a bit extra so that less work is needed your end.

(To clarify, I've never bought a hat myself but I am explaining why people would)

I can't bring myself to play Tf2 since all the hat updates. With the recent hatless update I'm tempted to come back to play again after almost a year.

Don't get your hopes up. The "hatless" part of the title just meant that there were no new hats added, since it seems like every new update throws in at least two or three new ones. There are no official server scripts to disable hats at this time.

I still play the game regularly. Despite all the nonsense over hats, when you get down to the gameplay it's still one of the best multiplayer games out there, in my humble opinion.

Just let people throw their money away if they want, it doesn't spoil the game for anyone else or give them any advantage.
