Free accounts basically just get a stripped down version of what everyone has had so far.

No, somebody purchased it for you, so yours will be a premium account. Basically, only people who start playing now (after this June 23rd update) will have free accounts.

According to the FAQ, if you bought the game but never made a Mann Co. purchase, you're still considered as a free player so it strips down what we already had. But Hey! I get a cool hat! yup. I bought it a while ago but hardly ever played because everyone was ridiculously good and it ran as slow as a snail on my computer but now my lack of any TF2 skill may not be so much of a problem

They've made one of the most enjoyable online games free to play as well as no DLC that you have to buy. And yet, people still feel the need to hate on it.
Honestly, I don't care if I get nothing out of paying for the game two YEARS ago, I'm still happy about it. Now for all my friends who are all 'eh, it looks cool but I don't wanna pay for it' have NO excuse to not try it.

Also one more thing, for everyone that said hats ruined the game, suck it.

EDIT: I just saw that everyone who payed money for TF2 now has a premium account, meaning their backpack is bigger and they get cooler stuff. People have NO reason to whine.

The FAQ says bought the game OR made a Mann Co. purchase so you'll have a premium account right off the bat.

I bought this game about a month ago.

You'd have to pay to get upgraded and wouldn't get the spiffy hat or access to rares, etc.
