Team Fortress 2 - out of date now?

Ultimately, this arguement is defeated by a quick glance at the Steam Stats page. Counter Strike Source and Counter Strike is consistantly the second and third most played games on Steam (pushed down one place by MW2, and its tides of fanbois). TF2 is constantly around the top ten. I don't think either of them are remotely close to death, while I expect MW2's last rites will be read around the release of Call of Duty 7.

Maybe Activision will pull the ultimate bastard move and switch the servers off when CoD 7 hit's the shelves. You just get an advert for the game when you try and play and a link to buy it.

What servers? So long as there is someone willing to play the game, then there will be "servers", as you don't run a dedi, the game just picks a host out of the lobby. No dedi servers, remember?

CoD games die because they're releasing a new iteration every year now.

I wouldn't go far as saying they're dead.

I still play CoD 1 and CoD 3 regularly, there's a decent amount of people on both.

Nah, Valve keep pushing update after update out. The Soldier vs Demo event was what, two monthes ago? And they also added the crafting idea. And recently the new items: the Homewrecker, the Pain Train, Dalokah's Bar, and several hats.

TF2 will always have a pretty dedicated fanbase, and what with Valve being the community-friendly dev that it is, half the game's update content is heavily influenced by the community already. They even have a new 'contribute' page, where users can submit ideas for new weapons/items, and the TF2 team will approve, tweak, or veto, and plop it into the game. I guess you could say that TF2 is really mostly community supported now. It's a great lil' game, and the users are passionate about it. It's total reliance on multiplayer means that it can always be put down and picked up again without a story to bog it down. And while some players dislike the updates messing with the original balance and aesthetics of the game, (here's lookin' at you, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/7170-Extra-Punctuation-Goth-Mercenaries.2>Yahtzee) there are still 'vanilla' servers out there that ban updated weapons/hats/etc, for people who like the original. Seriously, it's pretty much guaranteed a long and prosperous life.

Also, on a semi-related note: Goddamn the Pain Train and Homewrecker. What, give the Solly and Demo a 2x cap-speed weapon with almost no drawbacks while giving the Pyro a useless POS? (Who REALLY would use it instead of the flamethrower for buildings?!) c'mon, now...

I was playing it five minutes ago. They've still got updates coming, and its still fun as hell. Nah, TF2 is still fresh.

While I've grown tired of it (that and my computer often has problems with it due to its age) I think it will last for quite a while. TF2 just has this replayability and this charm to it.

Actually, if anything, TF2 is way more "time proof" than most modern combat shooters.

Pretty much every "realistic" shooter has been crushed under Bad Company 2 as far as quality goes. TF2 still lives.

This Tuesday I was ruffling through my atic; looking for some old games and found The Orange Box.
I originally got it for Half life & portal, but on Tuesday i thought i'd give TF2 a go. (why i didnt at the time is another story...) After some stressful moments with Steam; *sigh* I got it up and running.

Reading up on chat and other sites, is see lots of "complaints" about updates and how much they changed the game. Personally i feel games like Team Fortress and Counter Strike have had their day; pushed out by ModerenWarfare.
I'm enjoying the game so far but I cant help but wonder if the game is being kept alive by fans and not in demand.

Are things still going strong? and any thoughts on what to expect in coming patches?

Anyone who isn't happy with the updates can just buy it for xbox, which has never been updated. But no, it is not out of date, it has more players now than ever I believe.

TF2 won't ever go fully out of date due to its simplicity and uniqueness. Rather than do something that everyone is on the bandwagon to do every year (sorry CoD/MW2 but it is true) in the same way just with updated graphics and guns TF2 chose to do something slightly diffrent. Valve (generally) make their games to last rather than to cash in on. TF2 sits in a FPS category with Timesplitters rather than Bad Company/CoD.

Yes but all that goes through IW.net. There are no third party servers so therfore they could drop support anytime they liked.

Seriously? I thought it was all handled by steams servers. Isn't that the whole point of using steamworks?

But seriously. People are still playing TF2 because it's just that good. The updates add variety to the gameplay, which helps to keep it alive despite the sceptics. And to those people, I can only tell them to GTFO and play the 360 version if they don't like it that much.

Counter strike? Out of Date? Call of duty is better? WHAT!?

I tell you this. If in 10 years people are still playing MW2 you can call TF2 and CS outdated. Alot of people still play CS:S even though it was released in 2004 (6 years ago) and not to mention that the game is an essential for tournaments.

Come back to me in two years when those same amount of people if not more are playing Counter Strike and TF2 while the modern warfare binge that seems oh so popular these days will have been replaced several times by the next gaming "fad".

How is Modern Warfare better than TF2? TF2 has some humor and is fun to play. MW2 is just a generic shooter that doesn't have a lot going for it.
