While I was playing Portal I kept thinking to myself "Best. Game. Ever" But I've not touched it since completion where as TF2 has eaten a huge amount of my time and will continue to do so once I tire of COD4. It's a toughey and depends on individual preference I'd say

Been seeing a lot of people ignoring the guidelines [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.50823]!

Also, TF2 for longevity, Portal for innovation.

All in all, I'd say Portal, despite its brevity. Eight years down the road, I know I will look back on Portal and reminisce fondly, and probably sit any of my friends who are unfortunate enough to have never played the game in front of it to fix that problem. Team Fortress, on the other hand, while it is a great and wonderful thing, is not terribly innovative or unique, all told. Half-Life 2 I haven't played, but I also haven't heard terribly much good press about it, which I think is rather telling.

I prefer to think of it as the holy trinity: I'm not exactly religious, but I honestly could not place any of these games over the other. TF2 I didn't like as much as portal and HL2:EP2, though it is still the best team-based FPS I have ever played. Portal, of course, is just plain awesome.

As for HL2:EP2, I'm not sure why everyone's been downplaying it so much. It's far better than episode 1, and even episode 1 was miles ahead of all the other crap floating around on the market. As much as I liked portal, I can't really classify it as an FPS, so HL2 (and, as Yahtzee said, "All of its runty children") is still the best FPS I have ever had the honor to play.

Oh, and for the record, I consider Deus Ex and System Shock 2 to be a different category entirely (FPSRPGs), so they don't conflict with my choice for "Best FPS" much.

Not exactly sure where you're getting your "press". Gamerankings, Metacritic, 1UP, IGN, PC Gamer UK, PC Gamer Sweden, Eurogamer, and CVG all gave it at least a 9/10, if not a 10/10. If you want even more go to Gamespot, search for Half-life 2 episode 2, click reviews and then "others". And you'll see a slew of other reviewers giving it nothing but 9's and 10's (not gamespot themselves, which didn't review it as an individual game).

The game was awesome and had some amazing sequences in it. I can't believe you'd buy the orange box and not play it... but even more mind-blowing is that you say it didn't get good press.

As seems to be the theme in this thread, all are outstanding in their own right. TF2 is the best team-based FPS bar none, Portal is so incredibly packed with innovation I found myself frightened at times, and HL2 is a just plain solid all around game, I tend to sit down and play only to get off when it's time to sleep.

Half-life 2 > Team Fortress 2 > Portal.
Not really counting the Episodes. Half-life 2, for me, is the epitome of playing a great game on your pc. TF2 is an addictive multiplayer experience and Portal is a superb experiment. But Half-life 2 is the dog's bollocks.
Sorry to go against the grain. Apparently Portal's the holy grail around here.

I'm tainted by the old days of TFC but I still love TF2 (though I hate the devs with a fiery passion for getting rid of nades). My only gripe is that they tried to program some of the glitches that made TFC so great into TF2 when, in fact, most of the stuff that made TFC fun was completely unintentional. I can't even count how much time I spent in those conc/rocket jump maps back in the day because they were just so much damn fun.

Portal is great and I should get back into the custom map scene to see if there is anything new out there to play with because I really want some intricate portal maps to sink my teeth into. It is, in my opinion, the best thing about the orange box and the thing I have spent the most time on (still haven't been quite inspired to really play Ep. 2 seriously).

And here's me thinking that "dog's bollocks" are the bits that get cut so the game won't pee inside the house...

I'll go along with the Portal crowd. HL2 was enjoyable but not to the same degree as Portal; Portal was shorter, yes, but that allowed for tighter writing, less filler, and better puzzles. TF2 looks nifty, but I have yet to play it at all beyond poking around the maps. (And that "yet" is getting longer thanks to three blinking red LEDs on my 360. What is it about December and my home electronics? Three years ago it was my TV...)

"Dog's Bollocks"
-from Urban Dictionary

British slang meaning one of the following.

1) To be the best example of its kind.

2) Dog testicles.

3) An alcoholic drink that can be found somewhere in most pubs or bars in the UK.

It's probably like some small village brewery dealio... [googles it]
Yeah its one of the many Wychwood beers with silly names (like Hobgoblin), I'll have to see if I can find some imported here in Ontario.
I'll drink it while I play Half-life 2.

Definitely. Though for dollar value TF2 wins out because it's a great online experience, which is going to keep people playing long after they're done with Portal.

In years to come, I'll fondly think back of Portal, and it will be enshrined in the "Greatest gaming experiences ever"-gallery next to System Shock 2, Deus Ex and Fallout.

Half-Life 2 is the best, most solid and balanced single player shooter of the moment. Second pick of the box.

Even tho I have over 2 decades of gaming experience, I've always been quite bad at it. That makes multiplay not a viable option for me, so TF2 closes the line.

Portal just for the fun I had while playing it. TF2 is great, just a little limited for a multi-player only game. HL2 I honestly have to say I don't like that much, it's a really well made game but there are too many moments where the game just becomes a chore to play(for me) but the episodes are better.

Portal is indeed the greatest of the Orange Box games, but where have you been if you haven't heard about Half-Life 2? The only game that has won more Game of the Year awards from various publications is Half-Life 1 (with over 50. HL2 has around 40.) The episodes are also great, especially Ep. 2, which really lives up to the original.
