Okay, I've heard a lot of praise for this game, but I've never looked into it. Mostly because I get my ass handed to my on a regular basis when I play online. But everyone keeps raving about this game, so I'm curious now.

Can anyone tell me what this game is and why I should play it? You know, before I go out and get it just to find out why everyone else is having so much fun.

lolwut? Unreal Tournament and Quake (and its derivatives like the totally fucking awesome Warsow) anyone?

OP: TF2 is a really fun and addictive multiplayer fps that has a cool artstyle and lots of personality. The community is great. It's just an all around good experience. I got my copy for $8 off of amazon.com.

It's also a game where kill/death ratio is not looked at. It's about teamwork, and of course hats.

The balance, the teamwork. Teamwork is almost mandatory in this game. Really makes a difference.

If only my computer could run it...

This is why I like it.
Balance keeps it fun. People will complain about certain weapons, but that's because they themselves suck at the game. They complained about the Demoman's Shield and Sword because they were too stupid to react appropriately to it, for example.
And the way to act appropriately is to sidestep.
Or if your pyro then airblast/flame.

OT: Its an insanely balenced, hilarious, charming, unique, and just plain fun game.

Every class has a role to play. And everything has a counter.
Many games champion good multiplayer, Team Fortress 2 is one of the few to actually deliver. Plus it places emphasis more on teamwork than Kills/Deaths. Which is just fantastic.

Plus its actually supported years after launch with new maps/class updates/bugfixes/gameplay tweaks and whatnot. Well on the PC at least. Plus all the DLC is free.

Its not like most games where you get a few patches and maybe 2 DLC that you have to pay for right after release and thats that.

Its probably one of the most popular games on the PC right now. Its a simple Multiplayer experience with characters everyone loves, weapons that are just plain awesome and, if you have a computer that can handle it, some of the best and most enjoyable multiplayer games I have ever experienced.

Its a great game when you really get into it.

I'd like to add that because of how ridiculously many people are playing right now, you will always find a server you will enjoy playing on. Personally, I like servers with a 24 player limit (the default), with VALVe-official maps (rotating, not suck on one map) and preferably nocrits and default respawn time. That sounds specific, but I'll probably find a few now, then add them to my favourites. That's another good thing, if you find a server you like, you can add it to your favourites and you might get to know the regulars in TF2.

And that's the strangest thing: very, very few people in TF2 are mic-spamming assholes. It's really, really surreal. You're playing a game with tons of potentially foul-mouthed teenagers, but most of the time they act civillized. I have not seen this phenomenon happen with any other FPS.

I picked up TF2 a few days ago and I have been greatly enjoying it. Compared to my years of playing the likes of Counterstrike or CoD games online, the people I've been playing with on TF2 have been very awesome. :D

I have played it, and honestly I have no attraction to the game whatsoever. I mean, it is alright, but nothing special. And I ended up hating it even more after having a kid at my school watch Gary's mod videos of it nonstop. Its balanced, but not really enjoyable.
