The only thing impressive about this is that he got his hands on over 5000 teeny tiny mirrors and had the patience to stick them on there.

Other than that, it's just a demonstration of basic mathematics.

I foresee something terrible happening in the news involving this relatively soon.
Also, the background music for that music was pretty chill. I wonder where it's from.

That's pretty awesome, but frankly... 5000 suns? Did I miss something or was it on harmless tickle setting, it barely burned a block of wood.

Not for nothing, though! It's awesome, but building it up to that level makes it look bad if it doesn't perform at a certain level.

Dr Insano would be proud.

See, this shows you don't need guns in order to take over the world.

Remember that the relationship between light intensity and distance is inversely proportional ans squared. To have the laser aim twice as far requires four times the size of the setup. You can light a fire with a magnifying glass, but only at about 2 inches.

I'm not sure I can call this false...but at the same time, I'm not entirely sure I'm ready to bow down to the owner of his burned-down shed of doom. can we get the Mythbusters in on this? I mean, not on the Archemedes death ray. I mean, specifically on THIS.

No. They just proved doing it with a bunch of handheld mirrors was impossible. It really is impossible to focus that much light onto one spot by hand. Satellite dishes, on the other hand, are designed and shaped to do just that. Though the long-wave Electromagnetic Radiation given off by a TV satellite is nothing compared to the sheer power of the sun. So when you actually do point the thing at the sun (and make the surface of the dish reflect higher energy light), you get what happens in this video.

Though I have to take issue with him calling it a death ray. It's not really a ray if it only works at a single point in space. You'd need put the right lens at the dish's focus to turn it into a real death ray. You can also use a prism, or a mirror, or fiberoptics to direct the beam to make it more practical as a weapon.

I wonder how impressed his parents will be when the FBI knocks on the door.

If you're going to make something like this, don't post a video of it until after you take over a non-extradition country.

I'm trying to decide which way I'm going to take my lazy reference humour on this. I can't decide between:

"Forgive me Mr. President, but I am a man of science, not of war! I intended the giant Death ray to be used for good, not evil! To help mankind, not to destroy it!"

Or

"People keep giving me rings ? but I think a small death ray might be more practical."

EDIT: Sod it, I'll just argue over Mythbusters like everyone else.

When it says "The power of 5000 suns" it means at its focal point it generates 5000 times the intensity of sunlight at the earth's surface.

Still, solar ovens have been used for a long time, this is hardly an innovation. Although it is fun burning holes in things.

that was the exact same thought I had when I saw this, if it never worked for the mythbusters, it will never work for him.

Mythbusters rarely "proves" anything.
Correction; Mythbusters 'prove' on a regular basis that, science aside, no matter what it is, it is always fun to try and blow it up/ stick rockets on it
