Red Dead Redemption. I love that came a crapload.

Runners up are AssCreed Brohood, Vanquish and either New Vegas or BlOps.

I haven't played Just Cause 2, but it looks right up my alley.

Quite a hard decision. For the most fun, i'd say Mass Effect 2, simply because good combat was mixed with a good story. New Vegas is probably the game with the most hours in it, though, and the most replayability potential.

But then there were minecraft. But i guess its not actually out yet, so it doesn't count.

Lots of awesome games this year.

I think starcraft 2 was pretty awesome also, but every dialog just had at least one line that made me twitch from bad writing.

Overall i'd say ME2, probably, but its a really close one.

Black Ops

Well it was good but not my GOTY
Just Cause 2 was so much raw stupid fun, I miss that

Halo Reach was also bloody fantastic

Also haven't played New Vegas yet and I loved 3, also there is brotherhood too so I don't know yet. I will tell you on Christmas day

Heavy Rain is GOTY for me. It easily had the best story of the year in a game overall. It re- introduced things to gaming that needed to come back: compelling story, choices that actually affected the game, an actual sex scence, and multiple endings that didn't suck like Fallout 3.

Vanquish or Bayonetta.

Action games at their purest. Just you, a bunch of enemies, and your own skill. And a threadbare narrative just there to set it all up and show you cool shit.

I played Vanquish at least 4 times in a row, though. Bayonetta was on-again, off-again over the course of a few weeks.

So, I guess Vanquish.

I'm sick of the hearing people on the Escapist keep going on and on about narrative and immersion. You can keep your Mass Effect 2s and your Red Dead Redemptions and your New Vegases. The inevitable favorites of this topic.

Give me more crazy shit!

Although New Vegas has it's share of crazy shit (Animal Husbandry Farm, anyone?)...It's core gunplay and leveling systems are severely flawed and lacking.

Bayonetta.
Loved it.
I love Bayonetta too, but it came out in 2009, not 2010.
Unless I've misunderstood the thread which is about the best game you played this year, regardless of release date, in which case I apologize.

edit: It's been pointed out to me that I was wrong and it came out at the veeerrry start of January, so my apologies :)

Kind of a boring answer, but GOTY for me was Red Dead Redemption. Loved the story, loved the characters, loved the world, loved the gameplay: just loved it.

Hmmm, i was thinking of buying the game, it is only 26.99 here, but kudos to you good sir, after i read " actual sex scene" i did hit the order button.

Bayonetta came out in Japan last year but didn't make it to the rest of the world until January.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood easily tops my list. It's got the best parkour gameplay to date, interesting mission variety, a well-told story and an entirely new gameplay experience in its amazing multiplayer. Just an incredible game that finally brought out the series' full potential.

Other award winners include:

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty for Best Time Sink

Metro 2033 for Best First-Person Shooter

Bayonetta for Best Action Game

Amnesia: The Dark Descent for Best Survival-Horror Game In Forever

Final Fantasy XIII for Best Slow Starter (I'm not sure if this is a compliment or not)

Mass Effect 2 for Best Game With The Worst Gameplay Mechanic (Seriously, fuck probing)

Red Dead Redemption for Best Game That Was Still A Disappointment (I had hoped for so much more)

Oh yeah you're correct, sorry everyone!
Carry on, nothing to see here.

I'm going to voice in for Mass Effect 2 also, though I do have to tip my hat and second Alpha Protocol. If you dig a bioware style action RPG with dialog that is close to that level and choices that really have huge impacts on future events, I would definitely encourage picking it up.

Mario Galaxy 2.....followed by DK. (Honestly, I'm surprised I'm not seeing MUCH more Mario Galaxy's in this thread....IMO best 3d platformer ever)
I'm picking up ME2 for the holidays and I'm sure I'll enjoy it greatly, but nothing beats creative and colorful level design, catchy melodies, and challenging platforming for me. It's hard for me to get excited over any games that revolve around shooting anymore.....except Portal.

Amnesia: the Dark Descent.

First game in a long time to make me twitch with the atmosphere alone.
