If you've ever played The Empire Strikes Back for Gameboy, the opening level is absolutely terrible level design.
Oh my bob, you're right. I had even forgotten that I once played that game. To be honest, though, a bunch of the levels were terrible. The farthest I ever made it was Dagobah. And that was pretty much a call for celebration right there.

For me, it's anything to do with the Drowning Doom levels in Brutal Legend. The difficulty curve was nasty, considering what came before it.

Come to think of it, the one battle with the Tainted Coil got pretty frustrating too.

The desert of lost souls from God of War 1. Whoever came up with that level needs to be shot.
That was a stupid level. The signposting was fucking rubbish.

But it was nothing compared to the spinning blade columns in Hades.

Demon's Souls 4-2, the cliffs of the Shrine of Storms.
Particularly one spot where the flying Mantas are too numerous and too far away to effectively kill, and the game seems to go: "Boy I sure hope you picked up and understand how valuable the Thief Ring is or else this part is gonna suck."

You are trapped on a narrow cliff facing three silver skeletons, one archer and two melee, all while being barraged with death spikes from the sky. Dodging runs the risk of sending you off the edge, the mix of constant heavy melee and ranged bombardment makes blocking difficult, even if you get the chance to attack you run the risk of being interrupted at any moment and just taking a single swing too many will cause your character to slip right off the edge.
You can lure the Skeletons to a small ledge which they cannot get up and shoot them to death. It is made incredibly tedious still though depending on how good your bow is and being forced to stop every other shot to dodge more flying death spikes.

Then after you kill the silver skeletons? Two Gold Skeletons with massive swords! Granted you have a somewhat more spacious area to lure them to. You still have to deal with the Mantas shooting at you.

Even for a game like Demon's Souls this is a spot where the odds are simply too greatly against you.

Inb4 OoT Water Temple.
This wins every thread ever. I have restarted OoT about seven times now and always quit in frustration when playing that complicated mess of a temple. It's like the game is taunting me...

I still think the desert was worse. The blades were annoying because they were difficult. The desert was dificult because it was annoying.

The fade, I hate the fade. It's nearly painful to look at, you're without the rest of your part for most of the ordeal. If it weren't for the stat increasing things spread across it it would be almost as bad as...

Taris, I hate Taris, I really really really hate Taris! So much so that when Darth Malak's fleet bombs it I practically get up and cheer. It's just soo dreadfully boring, it takes too long and you're not even a jedi. In Knights of the Old Republic, a game where being a jedi is the big draw.
God I hate Taris.
Not sure why, but for some reason I actually kind of enjoyed Taris (ok it was filled with assholes but still.)

The level that earns my wrath however is Peragus from KOTOR 2. Yeah waking up in a strange facility where everyone has mysteriously died is kind of interesting, but the way the game handled it was just a pain. Go hear, go there, control T3 and go there, kill this legion of droids, talk to an annoying HK-47 rip-off, onto a ship, gun turret sequence. Seriously, the turret sequence at the end completely came out of nowhere. Where the hell did all of those soldiers come from anyway?

LOOOONG puzzles that have no save points and are not challenging only time wasting.

Like the sewer level in Tales Of Symphonia

A few levels from Doom 2 made me waste half of my time pressing use against every single spec of wall.

That thing in Sonic Adventure DX in the Sonic campaign where you're top-down in the temple and the eel thing is chasing you. I fucking hated that.

Oh my fucking god, the captcha contained an accented 'e'. It rejected my answer because I didn't have the fucking button on my keyboard.

Hades in God of War. I seriously got stuck on the spikey spire thing for an hour. Screw that level
edit- Just read the posts. This has been said plenty times before.
So my next hated level is The Parachute Canyon in Army of Two. Your friend has to be retardedly good at sniping or six-axis control and you have to control the other. Sure you can get a computer to do it. But I bought a terrible TWO player game. And I'm going to play it that way.

Absolutely every single Halo level that includes the flood. And absolutely every Water Temple on any The Legend of Zelda game.

Oh god...the Fade is the part of DA: Origins that I cannot stand. It's terrible to look at, tedious and I'm pretty sure longer than the quest it interrupts. Those essences and fonts helped even out the suckage, although the fade isn't that bad in Awakening (Although that's probably because my party could pretty much take down every enemy with ease since I was so overleveled :p)

I know, right. This is one of my favorite levels, first because many people hate it, second because the water theme & bosses both work (not to mention work together aka synergy), third because its the only instance where the challenge made me want to beat it instead of looking up the solution, though maybe I've just gotten lazier as I've aged. Either way, people who can't beat the water temple: grow a brain! (or just write down what u see in each room so u don't have to go re exploring to find where things were)

right back to the thread topic.

the bike chase in mgs4, wasn't this game supposed to be about stealth and espionage? It felt really, really out of place.

Killer Croc was the one bad part of Batman: Arkham Asylum. Just a big long test of patience.
I really liked that level! It was a slow pace level to allow juxtaposition with the frantic boss battles that follow it.
