This is an older one but, and i'm not even sure that it qualifies as a level, but the level in Starfox Dinosaur Planet about 50% of the way through the game. They had you take part in mini-games to, i think gain the trust of the muscle foot tribe. Anyway there was one trial that was IMPOSSIBLE! You basically had to tap a really fast to push the other guy into the hole first to prove your strength. The thing is, despite years of games before then, including a couple Mario parties, i could NOT tap A fast enough to win and continue the game. You seriously needed one of thous turbo controllers to get past this guy. So yeah, i only completed HALF the game because you needed to be robocop in order to pass this one level.

The vehicle levels in Bayonetta were absolutely horrendous.

But by far the worst level I can think of is The Plague Swamp in Demon's Souls. The rest of the levels are hard, even the shrine of storms with the one hit kill stalkers is fine, but that godamned swamp in 5-2 sucks. Hell, all of the Valley of Defilement is awful, but the swamp takes the big one. It's huge, you can't dodge in the water, and you get the plague every 30 seconds. Add in the fact that the stupid meat cleaver wielding Black Phantom moves at normal speed in the water, and he can dodge in the water. I still for the life of me can't beat that level, even with in offline mode.

Any sewer level. Seriously, name one that didn't suck.
I personally liked the one in Doom3:RoE where you had to fight with wonky vision from your biohazard suit while on an air supply timer. Not exactly inspiringly innovative but at least a break from the norm.

Carnival Night zone in Sonic 3. Cheap rip off of Casino Night zone in Sonic 2, with virtually no redeeming aspects (and those flipping barrel thingies).

Demon's Souls 4-2, the cliffs of the Shrine of Storms.
Particularly one spot where the flying Mantas are too numerous and too far away to effectively kill, and the game seems to go: "Boy I sure hope you picked up and understand how valuable the Thief Ring is or else this part is gonna suck."

You are trapped on a narrow cliff facing three silver skeletons, one archer and two melee, all while being barraged with death spikes from the sky. Dodging runs the risk of sending you off the edge, the mix of constant heavy melee and ranged bombardment makes blocking difficult, even if you get the chance to attack you run the risk of being interrupted at any moment and just taking a single swing too many will cause your character to slip right off the edge.
You can lure the Skeletons to a small ledge which they cannot get up and shoot them to death. It is made incredibly tedious still though depending on how good your bow is and being forced to stop every other shot to dodge more flying death spikes.

Then after you kill the silver skeletons? Two Gold Skeletons with massive swords! Granted you have a somewhat more spacious area to lure them to. You still have to deal with the Mantas shooting at you.

Even for a game like Demon's Souls this is a spot where the odds are simply too greatly against you.
Then you get killed by the grim reaper. It took me a week to do that section. No matter what I did, I died. My dodgy, quick character stood no chance. I refuse to play the game in case I get stuck there again. I can't bear it.

The second level in No More Heroes 2 when you play as Shinobu. You had to cross these small walkways while people shot at you.
If you held Z so you could guard, you'd likely fall off the edge and start to start over.
If you didn't hold Z, you'd be shot several times, and probably get thrown off the edge.
If you tried to dodge, you'd probably roll over the edge.

You see where I'm going with this? The platforming in that section took longer than the actual boss fight at the end.

Oh, and the section where you and the rank 7 guy play chicken on your motorcycles. His can burn out, has stronger handling, and can make those tight turns like a dream. Yours cannot burn out, and the handling is a joke. I had to do the section 4 times last playthrough; 3 of those times, I killed myself on accident.

Pfft, I actually like The Library. I used to dislike it, but it's definitely grown on me. It's mesmerizing, and Halo CE flood-only combat is actually pretty amazing once you figure out that the Flood aren't supposed to feel like Covenant in combat; fighting the flood is kind of a dance if you're actually doing it correctly. It's unique and interesting.

I hate the level Cortana, though, on tons of levels.
First, because Halo 3 flood combat actually does irreperably suck; high damage/low health/slow and disjointed approach means the absolute best way to fight them is lethargically. It's practically the polar opposite of Halo CE's upbeat flood.
The atmosphere would be far better if it brought out High Charity a tad more; by almost completely covering everything and giving exremely limited open views, you ruin opportunities for good juxtaposition. Optimally, they would have had some interior areas be a harsh flood hive, but also leave some open Halo 2-style vistas sticking out from it. By presenting what the thing used to be, you allow the changes to better distinguish themselves. You build contrast. This is one of the things the first Halo does brilliantly (albeit through slightly different means) but which most of the others fail miserably at.
Writing. Halo 3 takes a lot of crap for storytelling anyway, but it should, because unlike Halo 2 it's storytelling problems weren't the result of development time fail. While some of Cortana's lines in that level may yet be interesting depending on where canon expansion goes, even if the delivery was annoying, Gravemind seriously needed to stop letting Bungie's writers murder his awesome character established in Halo 2. And I'm a little sad that it's some conveniently placed Covenant reactor that was detonated and not In Amber Clad's.
Yeah, I have been thinking the same things. Whenever I see a thread like this, all I here about is how terrible the Library was. Just cause it is hard didn't make it terrible, it made it replayable. I went through that level at least seventeen times, trying to make it with less deaths and a smaller time.

Cortana > The Library? If only because the interiors didn't seem too copy paste. Still, they weren't very good, what with the whole "hey, let's take those cool rooms from Halo 2 and cover them in irremovable goo". But the Flood as an enemy never really bothered me in any Halo game, maybe "The Oracle" in the second game because Covie weapons vs flood just doesn't feel all that fun.

Peragus also doesn't really bother me. They try and fail a bit to go for the whole System Shock vibe, but there's some other cool stuff in there like the side story with the miners and that HK50 droid. The real shit part was the Malachor V section before the Restored Content Mod. Grey and red everywhere, and the same enemies who fall too easily to Force Storm spam.

The desert of lost souls from God of War 1. Whoever came up with that level needs to be shot.
That was a stupid level. The signposting was fucking rubbish.

But it was nothing compared to the spinning blade columns in Hades.
This. Those spinning blades made me want to chuck my controller. Actually, I think I did...

I still to this day cannot get the rhythm right for those stupid barrels in Carnival Night, when I did eventually pass that section it was because of luck not because I knew how to do it.

I hate the science lab in Gears 2 not because it's particularly hard or anything but because it's so out of place and so boring. I almost didn't want to finish the game because of that level.

Resident Evil 5's stupid sun beam puzzle; again not hard just very annoying and a complete waste of time.

Not one of the worst but the Twilight Steeple in Paper Mario: TTYD was so annoying. Go all the way to the end of the level then back. And then back again. And again. And yet again.
yes! especially because the chapter complete screen appears more than once "Oh I killed him well that was quick, what? I'm not done? well I'll just guess his name and.....he ran, okay let me walk alllll the way back and kill him. Again."

Any 'dark' level? I hope you don't count all the Dark World temples from A Link to the Past in that...I reckon that's an even better game than OoT, if that's possible.

The underwater level in Starfox 64.

The graphics were so bad I couldn't even tell what was going on half the time. The sad thing is that I loved the rest of that game.

awwwww, i liked that one & I didn't have that problem. How long ago did u play it? I suggest getting an emulator and rom & playing it again, this time should be different.
No, it's still horrible. I have the played the original 64 version and the ROM, and it's still a crap level. Trust me, I have beaten that game many, many times.

I was going to say the begining of Aroura in Fable III, the whole darkness cave then the slow walk through the desert, but then I remembered that the whole games sucked!
