This coincides with the phenomenon of bonus levels/dungeons with alarming frequency.

Going back quite a ways here, but Apogee's "Rise of the Triad" had a bonus level titled "Dead in Two Seconds" which began with the player in the middle of a room and surrounded by so called "Triad Enforcers"--pixelly, meat-shieldy, grenade-chucking George Broussard clones. Even with invulnerability toggled, I just remember thinkning "F--- this!"

The second to last level of Dark Forces. Man, I can't seem to pass it on normal. x.x;

Talk about Storm Trooper overkill!
IIRC, there was a gun that dealt with groups of stromtroopers pretty handily. The concussion rifle maybe? It fired waves of energy that decimated bunched-together groups, making the Imperial City level potentially very easy.

The amoeba blobs.

It was awful due to poor friendly AI walking into death, the particle effects slowing the frame-rate down to unplayable levels, trying to protect your dumb team-mate, shoot blobs and shoot the pods all at the same time and all of this while trying not to get killed yourself.

It was just a completely frustrating clusterfuck.
Yeah i almost gave up on that game at that point, It was so damn frustrating.

The fucking vortigore nest in Half-Life: Opposing Force, otherwise known as the sewer level during the Foxtrot Uniform chapter. Ten giant aliens one after the other in the dark that take rockets like normal enemies take bullets.

Ironic that the chapter was named Foxtrot Uniform, because the letters they represent sum up how I felt about that level...
That was the reason the name was chosen I suspect.

Bayonetta's Route 666 and Isla del Sol chapters...I hate them with a passion.

Especailly Isla del Sol...Why did it have to change the stick settings?! Argh!
The segment on the motorcycle is just tedious and hardly a challenge. The silly shooter section was fun for a time but eventually my thumb got tired having to mash that damn button. Either segment would have been fine if you weren't stuck doing it for half an hour.

The Ocarina of Time Water Temple is awesome, I seriously don't understand why so many people hate it. The Majora's Mask water temple (Great Bay Temple) is much more annoying with its currents that will take you to where you don't want to go over and over.

So speaking of Majora's Mask (a game I love despite not liking any of its temples), The Stone Tower temple is notably horrible. I don't know how many times you have to play the "Elegy of Emptiness" (its over 20 times, including the section immediately before the temple where you're climbing up). Then the temple itself is so dreary and has a dull design.

The final boss on Prototype. You're going to make him have shit loads of health? Sure, this isn't Wii Sports. You're going to make him deal shit loads of damage to me? Well, he is the final boss. An instant kill move? That's harsh. And those enemy troops don't help either.

Wait...

You're throwing in a time limit? With no checkpoints?

Fuck you. Fuck you so much.

It's so funny you brought that up, because I made a thread using that example about hard final boss battles.

Seriously, that was an insanely difficult level. I only finished it on normal with 1.2 seconds left. Heart was racing.

Vampire: Bloodlines. That goddamned arse of a sewer level, on the way to find the Nosferatu.

It's boring, confusing, padded to all hell and you're under constant attack from those Tzimisce head-with-leg things, and only rats for blood supply.

Ventrue playthrough of that section was the least fun I've ever had playing a game.
The warrens! argh i'd forgotten about that one. if you're melee and don't have a lot of stealth points, which I was in my play through, its like a cross continent ride on the paintrain. of course if you're ranged I'd imagine the first part with just the head-leg things would be rly hard. Anticipation of the warrens is the only thing thats keeping me from replaying that thing. I'm thinking getting 8 stealth would be the only way to do that part well. (I'm told the monstrosities down there have very bad eyesight.) Any tips on how to beat that part easily?
Nosferatu own at that stage ironically. You'll never run out of blood down there since rats give Nos 3 blood points instead of 1. They also have invisibility (malkavians have it too), so level it up until you can run while invisible. You should power level it ASAP anyway, level 5 is just so epic. You can buy the Anaconda from the 7-11 dude, so fill up on that and shotgun ammo as well.

The libary from Halo CE? seriously the fact people hate this are just mad, it was great it perfectly changed the balance of the entire game you had got used to 1 minute your relying on cover, next minute you cant due the Ai is as simple as "charge the chief"
The problem wasn't the Flood; I admit that they are an entertaining enemy to fight. The problem was that the entire level was padded to hell and it got repetitive FAST. You fight the same enemies, in the same dull environment, over and over and over (and over). it wouldn't be a bad level if it was either more varied or about a third as long, but as it stands it feels like a grindfest to rival most MMOs.

The one with Rogue in Sonic Adventure 2 where you had to find the three Chaos Emerald pieces in a time limit. Those levels are okay, if momentumm breaking, but that just crosses the line.
