The problem is......you get your news from the huffington post....nuff said.
You see the little AP that appears under the headline? That means it was written by the Associated Press.

Huffington's writers [http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D97J48IO2.html]had nothing to [http://www.statesman.com/news/content/gen/ap/TX_Perry_Tea_Party.html]do with it [http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/04/15/governor-says-texans-want-secede-union-probably-wont/]. They were just the one that got Digg'd [http://digg.com/politics/Gov_Rick_Perry_Texas_Could_Secede_Leave_Union].
Thank you for the links, and I concede the argument. It would seem to me though that he got a little carried away....no one is seriously for secession --- it just sounds really cool (if you are angry). And if he is truly serious the people will vote him out of office.

As a native born Texan and someone who still lives and loves this, the Greatest State in the Union (bring on the flamers y'all), I will say that while we Texans sometimes (half) jokingly talk about becoming our own nation, we probably wont do it...unless something outrageous happens like the nation government tries to take away the death penalty or force us to accept and allow gay marriage in the state. Those kinds of things are matters that are supposed to be left up to the states and Texas is proud of its choices on both matters.

I will say this though...if Texas wanted to become its own Country it could pull it off. Sure we wouldn't be a first world country and the standard of living might drop somewhat but we could still survive as our own nation, hell considering all the military bases in the state we could probably hold out longer than most states if and when the Union decides it doesn't want Texas to succeed (though even Texas would eventually lose out to the other 49 states).

The whole point of the United States of America was to allow men to live free. If a community cannot choose its own government, then its only choice is tyranny. In London papers, it was reported that American freedom died in 1865 when rule by the people and representative government was abolished in the name of empire.

And on a more practical level, I am sick to death of U.S. imperialism and authoritarianism. I support any Texans who want to live free, and hope my own state follows.

The reason for this is retarded, but the points they're using to justify it are damn good points. Your federal Government is and has been over-stepping its boundaries for a long time. It's hypocritical because they didn't kick up when Bush was in charge, but they're not in the wrong for it...

This worries me tho, Austin Texas was gonna be my ticket in to the US! >_<

--

Note: I sympathize purely because the exact same thing has happened with the EU. Voluntary organisation that began as a way to make trade more uniform across Europe has morphed into a federal entity that over-rules all sorts of social laws to the individual countries. Your federal government is a damn sight more democratic than the EU parliament but still.

I support Texas in seceding from a power that's over-extending itself for the same reason I support Britain seceding from the EU.

Every place has its people who want to secede, heck I bet even Washington d.c. has some. I personally think the north east should secede as I am sick of us pulling the rest of Americas weight.
wow u really are an idiot

Texas can secede, because it used to be it's own country and is large enough to be divided into 7 states

we have been our own country before and can do it again

the Bush family is from up north, Illinois I think, they ARE NOT TEXAN, we do not claim them

since when has the northeast carried everybody else? you'd be fucked without us, don't act so high and mighty

im not saying Texas seceding from the Union is a good idea, but we're the only state that can pull it off

i could say more but i really don't care enough to go into detail, it's not worth arguing if my opponents don't understand what im talking about
Northerners always think the Southerners don't do shit. Hell, I'm always down for another civil war. If Texas leaves Georgia's comin' too.

I'm not inviting Florida though.

Secessionists, huh? Idiots. Let them try to secede. We'll go down here, kill some of 'em off, and change their minds. I don't mean to sound offensive to Texans, I mean to sound offensive to idiots who think their state is going to secede from the USA.

First you have Palin making comments that Alaska is a sovereign government*, and now a week later we get this.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/15/gov-rick-perry-texas-coul_n_187490.html

So good ol' Governor Perry and his infinite wisdom is starting up secessionist feelings in the Lone Star state.

I just have to ask (and no offense meant to any Texans here). Is he fucking retarded? Not only did secession not work the first time (because of a Republican, ironically), but Texas gets about 80% of the money its citizens pay in taxes back in pork and government projects, so his argument is invalid. Also, it was a Texan in the white house the last 8 years that blew up the deficit in the first place.

I don't know, someone, anyone, please, tell me this is all just a bad joke.

* Though the Palin comment was probably more her not knowing what the word sovereign meant than it was a call for rebellion
Yes, rick perry is retarded. We inherited him when bush got elected.

A little history lesson: The first time they seceeded was because there was 1500 miles between them and friendly territory if they sided with the US government. Not much of a choice.

Also, Texas has no state income tax, and the amount of state services we have is extremely minimal, the condition of the roadways and social programs suffering because of it.

So yeah, leave it at rick perry is an idiot who sold highway 121 to a company in switzerland and move on.

I wish they had done so 9 years ago before we got their moron of a governor in the White House.

Then after 8 years of him wrecking our economy and reputation, now they want to secede? We should let them after they pay off the deficit Bush ran up.

Is this the purpose of the American government? Is this a goal that furthers American ideas of liberty and rule by the people? Is this what men should be doing to one another?

Quebec has not left Canada yet. If thats any indication, parts of modern nations don't just pack up and leave. There is no reason too. I doubt Texas, or any state, would ever be motivated enough to leave the US.

No worries.

First of all, Governor Perry's about to be impeached as governor since he passed a law that said that oil companies have the right to take your property as they see fit if there's oil on your property.
Wait, he PASSED a law like that? Isn't that against the bill of rights?

What? Killing? I didn't say that's what anyone should be doing, but no one should be seceding from their countries either. As far as I'm concerned, if a part of a country tries to break away from the country (especially for no reason like being upset over taxes) the country has the right to declare war on the secessionists and do whatever is necessary to restore the breakaway state to the country as soon as possible.

I never said we should be killing people, or that it's a "goal that furthers American ideas of liberty and rule by the people," or that it's what we "should be doing to one another." But they need to be able to identify between what they can and can't do, and they have absolutely no reason to secede, and if they did so then yes we should attack and/or kill them if we are unable to correct the situation through more peaceful methods.
