I understand what you're getting at man I feel like I'm the only sane person in my school. I'm 17 I don't text or own a cell phone, I don't have a Cell Phone because of Cell by Stephen King.
Wait, wait; you don't have a cell phone because of a book? How scary was this book, exactly?
I'm guessing "chilling to the core" scary.

At times, texting is fine. When you and the text recipient are at different places, if you can't bring attention to yourself, if you don't want to disrupt something for the rest of the people, ect.
But if you text simply for the joy of writing a text message, you are now retarded. Congratulations, pick up your cookie over here.

Yah I do find texting to be a very strange thing...like something that I would prefer to view from behind one way glass. I have a phone and I really only use texting to let my parents know if something is up.

It is sad though how people are addicted to it. I have honestly seen some girls take their friends phone, send a text TO THEMSELVES, and then go get their own phone and read it....I wish I was kidding.

I have seen them spend entire lunch hours going through their inbox and reading a conversation with someone that goes something like this.

"Hey", "Hey", "What are you doing?", "Nothing, lol", "Lol", "So what are you doing?", "Homework, ugh, lol", "Lol".

It sickens me...whats with the "Lol" at the end of everything, and what is the purpose of such a trivial conversation.

If you really care that much about what they're doing PICK UP THE DAMN PHONE AND CALL THEM! That's what they were made for anyway!

EDIT: Ah, I almost forgot another thing that texters do that makes my soul cry. People (who shall remain nameless) will send a text to someone across the room. And then they will walk over to them 20 seconds later and say, "Did you get my text?" They say, "No". Then the first person says, "Oh I said blah blah blah whatever."

So that's like the kick to the stomach of my soul...but the kick to the balls is the second person will then open their phone and read the text that was JUST EXPLAINED TO THEM and start laughing again.

Sooo... Anyone read any good books lately?
Yes! I have, actually.
I read Art Of The Impossible. Its very good.
Would you reccomend it to a very avid fantasy/sci fi reader who sometimes dabbles in biographies and whatnot?
Why, yes. Although you have probably read both of them.

Monstrous Regiment (Terry Prachett) Neverwhere, Anansi Boys (Neil Gaimen)

Fly to your local book store! Wrest them from the confining clutches of the shelves!

Looks interesting, think I'll check it out.
A fellow terry pratchett reader?! You, sir, have made my day! I am currently reading "Going Postal" myself.

I have no problem with texting... except for this exact situation you bring to mind. If the person is within earshot and you can't open your mouth to say whatever it is you have to say, then it's probably not important enough to even message them with.

My main concern with texting is what it's doing to people's grammar. See this? This, right here? This is how I type. ALWAYS. Be it texting, posting, or IM, I am always as grammatically correct as I know how to be. The way I see it, "txt tlk" is not only lazy, it can even be seen as downright rude. Imagine this situation, if you will:

Say you've got a problem. A serious one. You come online and talk to a friend through an instant messenger about it. After your long, well-thought out spiel about exactly what's going on in your life and why you're in such a terrible mood, you ask for advice. All you get in return is:

"idk man"

Do you know how that comes across? The person, even after reading through your strife-ridden paragraph, still can't even bring himself to type out a response that takes more than two seconds to type. Not only is that lethargic, it also comes across as apathetic, whether they mean for it to be or not. This is a conversation, not a race. Take your time saying what you have to say, or don't even bother.

...*looks back at wall of text*... Whoops. I think I went off on an entirely different tangent.

I text way more then i talk on the phone
it gives me the option to answer on my own time and gives me a chance to word things the way i want

I dont talk on the phone unless i plan something or im talking to the girl i like, who also feels the same way i about text, so its not really a problem

I'm 15. I'll give a teens perspective on texting.

Texting pisses me off. A couple of my friends always text around me and that makes me think that their talking behind my back when I'm standing right next to them. Some of my friends always text but never answer their phones and instead of calling me back they text me saying that I'm an asshole for calling instead of texting. Text messages feel awkward to send and it just doesn't feel like I'm talking to anyone. I always get a message at the most inconvenient time, such as, when I'm very immersed in Fallout 3, brushing my teeth, eating, jacking off (Yeah, I went there. Nothing worse then violating yourself and a girl you really like texting you asking what your doing after saying how open and honest you are!), when I'm trying to talk to my dad about the first call I'll get, in class and the list goes on and on.

One thing I like about texting, it can be convenient. I can text my mom to bring my track jersey to school because I forgot to bring it on a day I have a meet or, I can ask a friend the answer to a hard question on a math test I'm taking.

In the end, texting is useful when you can't talk but any other time, it's just fucking annoying.

I used to think like that...until I got a girlfriend. At some times during the day, it's much easier to just get in a quick sentence rather than a call. And when she was having issues getting a decent signal, texting was our only way to communicate.

However, I am NOT one of those lazy text-speak pricks. Most of my messages are about a page long and contain proper grammar and spelling.

Simply put, somtimes texting is acceptable. But, if it becomes the only mean of communication that is utilized when you have something capable of transmitting the human voice over air? You need to lose your phone. The same should go for the "txt" speakers. Hatehatehate them.

Its part of the 'Lost Era' Star Trek series. It is very well written book, set around a Cardassian/Klingon Political treaty, and the romulan attack on Khitomer. Very political, and with lots of espionage and counter espionage.
Hmm... I never got into the whole star trek series. Is there any prerequisite reading?
Beyond liking the show, no not really.

Hate texting, if it's that damn important then just friggin call the person. People who do nothing but text all day need to be beaten to death with their phones.

All I can think of is the Family Guy bit where King's trying to pitch his story about the Lamp Monster and just goes "Ooooooooooooh. Oooooooooooooooooooohhhh!" until they guys buys it.

I hate lol. Everything you do can't possibly be that funny. The people who have conversations like that are the ones who think they should be texting just because everyone else is.

Die Conformists!

Well, I liked a few of the movies and I did read some of the Deep Space 9 books. I'll have to give that book a try.

I like texting. I find it handy for when it's just a simple message or question I want to pass along. Though I don't like shortening words or using 'txt speech'.. It saves, what, a few cents, if anything? I think I'd rather not come across as a lackwit just to save the tiniest about of credit.
