I have no problem with texting... except for this exact situation you bring to mind. If the person is within earshot and you can't open your mouth to say whatever it is you have to say, then it's probably not important enough to even message them with.

My main concern with texting is what it's doing to people's grammar. See this? This, right here? This is how I type. ALWAYS. Be it texting, posting, or IM, I am always as grammatically correct as I know how to be. The way I see it, "txt tlk" is not only lazy, it can even be seen as downright rude. Imagine this situation, if you will:

Say you've got a problem. A serious one. You come online and talk to a friend through an instant messenger about it. After your long, well-thought out spiel about exactly what's going on in your life and why you're in such a terrible mood, you ask for advice. All you get in return is:

"idk man"

Do you know how that comes across? The person, even after reading through your strife-ridden paragraph, still can't even bring himself to type out a response that takes more than two seconds to type. Not only is that lethargic, it also comes across as apathetic, whether they mean for it to be or not. This is a conversation, not a race. Take your time saying what you have to say, or don't even bother.

...*looks back at wall of text*... Whoops. I think I went off on an entirely different tangent.
I fully support your stance! Fight the good fight!

Sooo... Anyone read any good books lately?
Does manga count?
Of course!
I'm reading xxxHolicxxx right now. About halfway through the series and I've enjoyed it thus far. It's mostly dialogue and story telling, not a lot of action, but it's a Clamp series so that's to be expected.

Well, it is cheaper to send text messages to other people than to call them. I don't call my friends just to say "meet me after school". At least for me, anyway.

Wait, wait; you don't have a cell phone because of a book? How scary was this book, exactly?
I'm guessing "chilling to the core" scary.

Read it and find out.
All I can think of is the Family Guy bit where King's trying to pitch his story about the Lamp Monster and just goes "Ooooooooooooh. Oooooooooooooooooooohhhh!" until they guys buys it.
Have you ever read Stephen King?
I have not personally, though I've talked to people who have read several of his books. Most recently one of my friends read The Talisman and liked it. Not really my genre of book though.

Sometimes I get text from my parents due to sheer laziness. I think that's cause they're really getting into it and try to use it as much as possible. But sometimes I do it at work where I know I can't really talk... So texting breaks up the monotony at work. Plus, I don't talk in text. I text out full words and paragraphs if I have too. But I'd much rather talk than text if I can.

I'm about a chapter past the procession. Volume 6. It's months overdue at the library because I've been busy with school and gaming. Not enough time in the day.

To be honest with you, I hate talking on the phone. It just annoys me how people think
they can call me up and talk about nothing... I think I now know why my relationships have not lasted too long... but in all seriousness, it just comes across to me as a waste. I just wanna know the essentials. If I really want to talk to you, I'll drive up to your house or something and talk.

Yeah, sometimes it can be like that. I don't mind talking on the phone or in person. But people like you don't like talking over the phone. So, some people I know that are like that resort to texting. They'd rather just talk to me in person the next day or online if they have to. So I understand where you're coming from.

May I suggest http://www.mangafox.com/manga/xxxholic/ ?
Although I would rather people buy the books or go to the library, this is a good alternative.

Yeah, I once drove to my friends house at around 1 am to hang out and talk... I texted her first, of course so she could be ready... But I'm glad that you see where im coming from. And yes, instant messaging is one of my preferred modes of contact, along with text and face to face.

Well, I don't think texting was meant for the purpose that it is now. I suppose it was for short conversations. Maybe stuff like "Pick up this at the store", etc etc. Especially if you don't have a pen & paper in handy for instructions. You have the list of whatever you need to get/do already sent to you to have in the future. Communication is always best in person. Facial expressions as well as the tone of the person's voice makes the conversation better and worthwhile. I can't go drive to my boyfriend's house at 1am. It'd take me 1hr and 40mins to do so. Lol.

Well, this girl is like my sister, and lives about 5-10 minutes away by car. Best friends are awesome like that!

Well hell yeah. If they're close then I'm totally down for random 1am drives. But I moved from all my friends and family 4yrs ago to live in the sticks of Jersey. Grr. Stupid suburbs can bite me.

Hate texting, if it's that damn important then just friggin call the person. People who do nothing but text all day need to be beaten to death with their phones.
A phone flail?
Maybe, it could work.

Texting is convenient. Its a useful thing to have at your disposal. Sure people can take it too far and text when calling would be a lot easier but thats life.

Yeah. I would like to meet new people here, but it's so much of a hassle. Only new friends that I made is at work... that's cause I've been there for a year. Other than that, I stick to what I've known for years. Getting to be good friends takes too much time and effort. Plus people seem to be flakier when they're adults. Totally not worth the time.

People will always take something and push the envelope. Why? I don't know, but like you said, that's life. People'll do whatever for self-satisfaction, even if it is trivial to everyone else.

NOTE: I am 15, not some crotchety old guy who goes off on the "Back in my day..." speech.
16, and I'm 100% behind you. I'm just amazed that so there is some teenager out there who shares my very anti-texting veiws.
