I guess it's fun and all... But why in the name of jebus would a sword give you +50% fire resistance? It makes no sense to me :p
sword doesn't, shield does

I'm going to copy my response from a different site *Ahem*

I FUCKIN KNEW IT

I for one will love charging around the map as a crazed William Wallace wannabe hacking peoples heads off, though I must say this plays WAAAAAY to much on the fact hes Scottish and has NOTHING to do with blowing shit up which is kinda HIS JOB.
Dude. You get a giant sword that can chop someone's head off, stop complaining.
You are correct, if you don't like it (despite it's awesomeness) don't use it.

Of course, the true disappointment comes in the fact that demos are gonna get screwed out of the secret weapon. That is unless every Soldier player suffers a debilitating stroke, but still logs in to give us free kills.
Better start killing then. But I'm pretty sure the Soldier will receive similar gimmick-ish weapons. Remember that one hidden page showed us a mini bugle, which is pretty soldier-ish because of this:

I think this is going to be awesome.

It seemed a bit overpowered to me, but then I realised that I had to get rid of my stickybomb launcher.

Assuming that people actually care what competitive players think about anything.
Is your point that people should care about what pubbers say more than competitive players, or that we shouldn't care about what anyone here says about games at all?

While I think it's phenomenally stupid, I also think it's a hilarious idea. Still not a good one, though. It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the demoman as he currently exists; it's kind of like giving the medic a small howitzer, or giving the scout a deployable bubble shield, or the engineer a half-decayed weasel smeared with peanut butter. Melee weapons are a nice addition to the game, but they shouldn't be adding weapons that encourage melee play over guns- we call this genre First Person SHOOTERS after all.

Still, I can't wait to see what else they have planned.

By the way, I think the soldier is slightly ahead on kills because most people realise the demo is already overpowered, so the soldier is more likely to need the bonus unlock than the demo is. That's my reasoning anyway.

Exactly, obviously nobody can jump onto the overpowered wagon until they've played the updated game, but to balance the removal of the Demoman's primary weapon (which easily allows a skilled player to do more damage than any other weapon in the game) the unlock had to be pretty damn powerful.

And the Demoman is now my favourite class.

I think it's a William Wallace reference. He is Scottish after all.
You do know that William Wallace wasn't the only Scot to ever use a sword and shield?

There's another reference too. The sword is a Claymore. A Claymore is also an anti-personnel explosive. Anyway I think it's pretty damn awesome and hopefully serves as a good incentive for people to ditch the stickybomb launcher at times...cause I hate that thing.
The sword is most definitely not a Claymore. Sure, it's huge, but if you look at the hilt and cross guard, and the width of the blade, it appears to be a generic Broadsword.

No, I think that his point is that the opinion of a competitive gamer is hard to respect, mainly because they completely miss the point of a game [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StopHavingFunGuys].

Stop Having Fun Guys are a very very specific breed of competitive players, just as scrubs are a very specific breed of pubbers. Categorizing either group as representing their entire respective populations is just silly. For every douche of a competitive player one could list, another could just as easily list as many (if not considerably more) clueless pubbers. There's nothing inherently wrong with playing competitively, just like there's nothing inherently wrong with playing casually, similarly to how sports games and board games like Chess/Go can be enjoyed both very casually and extremely competitively.

In the end you should just treat people as individuals. The whole "hah, like we'll listen to competitive players" comes off as much, much more closed-minded, condescending, and douchy than 90% of the competitive players I know. The loudmouthed ones don't represent all of us.

Despite what others might think, I'll enjoy this.
And if it makes someone create a jousting demo-on-demo arena style map...

BRING IT ON!

I can see the use for it certain strategies, too, but more of a stalemate breaker with a medic.
You know, activate Kritzkrieg and charge past a line.
or Uber, and charge around a sentried corner to nuke it from behind.
All situational, of course.

PS: Nader - The sentiment is fine, but you can continue to talk about airshots and the soldier's weak willed ilk.
The rest of High won't mind.

But the stereotype's exactly what he was referring to, and that's exactly what I was pointing out.

That said, REWIND!

<<

i doubt it will get much use, simply cause the damage output of stickies is beyond any thing else in the game. i mean, carpet bombing in comp is so important, i doubt a demo will give it up for.... the ability to get in close, then get killed by the entire team, with no real dodging capability and no way to ambush, i see this just as a gimmick weapon.
The guy he was replying to matched the 'Stop Having Fun Guys' stereotype quite well.

But I, personally, agree with you. I'm sorry if that came off as my own belief, I was just clarifying someone else's.
