Come on now, this is not at all about the gaming community being more perverted or sexist than any other medium. You find this shit everywhere! What about horror movies for example? Why is it only hot girls being killed off? Why are they all not fat and ugly? Why is there only slim, beatiful women on the frontpage of every magazine out there? You can go on and on with this stuff.. Sex sells. Beauty sells. That is how our society is made up today, and has NOTHING to do with gaming at all. That statue just as well could have come with a Halloween collectors edition box.sanquin said:Is the statue misogynist? No. Is it sexist? Hell yes in my opinion. Why did it have to specifically be a big-breasted, slim female body in a rather small bikini? It being a female body, fine. There's a 50% chance it could be female after all. But why couldn't they have put a tank top on? Or a ripped t-shirt? And why did the boobs have to be DD size?
Imo it's marketing like this that makes the gaming community look worse than it actually is. Yes there are plenty of area's of the gaming and internet community that are a filthy cesspool of bile that you should stay away from. But the largest part is far more mature and reasonable than that. Yet companies still insist on mainly marketing to perverted teenage boys, like that is what 3/4 or more of their customer base is.
Well, statistically, 50% of all characters in games should be female. Sort of not the case, as there still is the thinking that being male is 'normal', and if someone is female, they are defined by their femaleness.sanquin said:It being a female body, fine. When stuff like this happens? I agree. And then tomorrow I'll see something to do with Journey, or something amazing someone created in LittleBigPlanet, and I'll bang on about how great the gaming community is. I just think that not everyone is stupid enough to put a dismembered bikini torso out there as something we're expected to embrace. And it's got to say something positive that it was received so badly, right?Zhukov said:I'd say the gaming community, especially the online gaming community, gets exactly the reputation it deserves.
Here in our little bubble world we like to convince ourselves that gaming is a totally legit art form for adults and blah-de-blah-de-blah.
Every now and again we are reminded that the rest of the world sees out hobby as a juvenile series of mostly violence-fuelled thematically derivative power fantasies with the approximate depth of a tea tray.
Quite frankly, I still can't see much reason to say they're wrong.
I guess the situation will change when either (a) everyone currently over the age of 30 has died or (b) the industry as a whole starts putting out good stuff on a regular basis.
Expected to embrace? Seriously, what? It's a collectors edition figure... those are NEVER made to appeal to the ALL of the fans. It's usually for the diehards only, so if it doesn't fit your taste, why don't you just move along. More than anything, it's the ridiculous response from the fans in the gaming community that is the problem, not the statue. Whining as soon as something doesn't cater to YOU, blowing up every little issue, outrage this outrage that. Surely movie fans would not have reacted like this if this was included in a zombie horror dvd set. More than anything, we are proving to the outside that we have way too much spare time on our hands. Not only gaming in itself, but arguing and bickering over every little issue, even spending loads of time trying to influence the creative choices of the developers in the business. It's gotten out of hand.Starik20X6 said:When stuff like this happens? I agree. In this case though, the uproar is once again coming from inside our own community. I seriously doubt any parents at all are aware of what collector's edition packages are being released every month. The statue caters to a small dedicated fanbase, it's not like they expect everyone to buy this. They know who their core fans is, and went for it. If you don't like it, you have a choice to ignore it. I'm quite sure if no one buys it, then Deep Silver might choose differently next time around. Anyways, I'll leave this alone now, such a nontopic does not need anymore attention.Proverbial Jon said:I knew this would happen.
It's always the same with these stupid PR stunts, especially the EA ones. Remember those "Your Mum will hate it" Dead Sapce adverts? This sort of approach doesn't even appeal to the people they're marketing their product to, so heaven only knows what the people outside our gaming bubble are led to think of our precious "hobby."
Sometimes I'm made to feel like gaming as an activity is akin to cutting up bodies in my basement. Oh how appropriate.
I'm not particularly outraged at its existence because as a rational, grown person I can ignore its presence without throwing a tantrum. I also know that the majority of our community also thinks that it is tasteless, which is heartening for me at any rate. I just worry about the damage it does on the outside, even if, as you say, most people probably won't be aware of it. The problem is, when the gaming community is put in the spotlight it's normally because of these sorts of things and the fact that even our "own people" disagree with it will be lost on most.havoc33 said:In this case though, the uproar is once again coming from inside our own community. Kinda have to agree with you here. The only thing I really see to complain about is the fact that such a lack luster item is used to represent the game. I actually played the game, though not to its conclusion as I ended up getting bored with it, but I hardly think a dismembered torso to be an accurate representation of what I'd see in the game. Sure I saw a fair amount of de-limbed bikini clad women on the beach in the first chapter, but from that point on it was a rarity. Why not include a bust of one of the cast of the game, or perhaps one of the special zombies. The bust itself was such a non sales point that it is the only reason to be upset with this bundle.Stavros Dimou said:I don't think Deep Silver made us look bad.
I think that the guy you quoted is over exaggerating, and that those who complain for this statue are hypocrites.
And I'll tell you why. Because this statue is just a statue of what you see in the game. That's what the game is all about.
That's what you are expecting to see coming with a collector's edition of a game,a physical item that is a replica of something that is founded inside the game. If you didn't liked dead bodies without limbs, you wouldn't play this game.
So how can you say that this is offensive, when it's just what this game is all about ? If you truly find bodies with their limbs cut out to be offensive, well guess what, then you probably shouldn't play this game either, and the series should be a failure.
Now the amount of exaggeration on criticizing this particular collector's edition item is ludicrous.
Using the same standards someone would describe Alduin's statue from Skyrim as "a hideous representation of the beast from Apocalypse targeted to Satan lovers". Don't you see how ridiculous and far-fetched that kind of critic is ?
Or is it because it's specifically the body of a woman, that is covered with a bikini, presenting a similar view as the one you would see on a beach during summer ? No,I'm wrong. Many women go topless on beaches.
Now in case you wonder,I didn't bought the collector's edition of this game.In fact I didn't bought the game at all neither its prequel, because I don't like zombies and I think just mutilating zombies is kinda dumb. But for people who like to tear apart the bodies of dead people and like watching that for hours on their screen,I can't see how they can be offended by having a replica of that in their rooms. Nobody serious enough is going to call you a psycho killer for having a stylized media prop on your house.
What are the complaints ? That it's the torso of a woman and not a mans ? That it wears a modern bikini and not full-covering body suit like those women wore on the 1930s ?
In my opinion I'm surprised so many people overreact over such trivial things.

Yeah, that seemed to take off when Australian politics had the hate speech...shrekfan246 said:And yet again the word "misogynist" is thrown around with no regards to its actual meaning...
