Is the statue misogynist? No. Is it sexist? Hell yes in my opinion. Why did it have to specifically be a big-breasted, slim female body in a rather small bikini? It being a female body, fine. There's a 50% chance it could be female after all. But why couldn't they have put a tank top on? Or a ripped t-shirt? And why did the boobs have to be DD size?

Imo it's marketing like this that makes the gaming community look worse than it actually is. Yes there are plenty of area's of the gaming and internet community that are a filthy cesspool of bile that you should stay away from. But the largest part is far more mature and reasonable than that. Yet companies still insist on mainly marketing to perverted teenage boys, like that is what 3/4 or more of their customer base is.
Come on now, this is not at all about the gaming community being more perverted or sexist than any other medium. You find this shit everywhere! What about horror movies for example? Why is it only hot girls being killed off? Why are they all not fat and ugly? Why is there only slim, beatiful women on the frontpage of every magazine out there? You can go on and on with this stuff.. Sex sells. Beauty sells. That is how our society is made up today, and has NOTHING to do with gaming at all. That statue just as well could have come with a Halloween collectors edition box.

As a matter of fact, it is people from the gaming community THEMSELVES that are continously making us look worse than we are. It was we ourselves that created the stir about this stupid figure, not any outsiders. Once again we show that we are the most whining, idiotic people on the planet, and the statue had nothing to do with it. It was just another thing to ***** about, like the Mass Effect ending and countless other issues that the GAMING community has gone overboard with. I can guarantee you if this statue was included in a zombie dvd box of some kind, no one would even blink. People obviously have too much time on their hands!

Remember folks, it's only sexist when it's female.

Had it been a dismembered naked male torso we wouldn't even have seen a tiny fraction of this "outrage".

Am I sexist, if I say that I just don't care? If they want a bloody female torso, let them have a bloody female torso. No one's going to be affected by it's existence. It's not like every single of one them has aids, and will infect us upon touch.

So when a game company does something like this, the whole gaming community is given a bad image.
But when a band does something along the same lines (first example i can think of is Ozzy eating a bat, but i've heard of death metal bands doing much worse onstage), its only the band that gets the bad rep?
Little hypocritical no?

Reading the OP's link now.

Wait, elitists "know-it-all"s think they're miles above the common plebs, and need to treat a large homogeneous group called "gamers" as a faceless blob and insult every one of them for the actions of the PR department of 1 gaming company?

Oh well. Elitists being elitists. I can so imagine the creator of that blog sitting near the fireplace, glass of whisky in his hand, cuban cigar in the other, smelling his own farts because he's just THAT much better than anybody else.

Is that statue tasteless? Yeah it is. Know what? IT'S A ZOMBIE GAME. Tasteless is funny. No shit would be given if this was about some cult zombie movie.

I seriously don't get WHY people are picking on this. You certainly didn't see Piranhas 3D get THIS kind of flak, did you? No one called it out for being misogynistic and tasteless, even though it contains copious amounts of blood and tits. So it's a bloody bust, so what? People have bought and collected worse.

Really, we gamers are seriously too hard on our own medium sometimes.

Is it misogynistic and objectifying? Not to mention tasteless?
Yes.

But I don't think it's all that problematic, because it knows what it is. I haven't played this game, but if the marketing doesn't represent it, I'd be annoyed that a game is being marketed like tits are the most important reason to play it.

Well, statistically, 50% of all characters in games should be female. Sort of not the case, as there still is the thinking that being male is 'normal', and if someone is female, they are defined by their femaleness.

I'd say the gaming community, especially the online gaming community, gets exactly the reputation it deserves.

Here in our little bubble world we like to convince ourselves that gaming is a totally legit art form for adults and blah-de-blah-de-blah.

Every now and again we are reminded that the rest of the world sees out hobby as a juvenile series of mostly violence-fuelled thematically derivative power fantasies with the approximate depth of a tea tray.

Quite frankly, I still can't see much reason to say they're wrong.

I guess the situation will change when either (a) everyone currently over the age of 30 has died or (b) the industry as a whole starts putting out good stuff on a regular basis.
When stuff like this happens? I agree. And then tomorrow I'll see something to do with Journey, or something amazing someone created in LittleBigPlanet, and I'll bang on about how great the gaming community is. I just think that not everyone is stupid enough to put a dismembered bikini torso out there as something we're expected to embrace. And it's got to say something positive that it was received so badly, right?

Expected to embrace? Seriously, what? It's a collectors edition figure... those are NEVER made to appeal to the ALL of the fans. It's usually for the diehards only, so if it doesn't fit your taste, why don't you just move along. More than anything, it's the ridiculous response from the fans in the gaming community that is the problem, not the statue. Whining as soon as something doesn't cater to YOU, blowing up every little issue, outrage this outrage that. Surely movie fans would not have reacted like this if this was included in a zombie horror dvd set. More than anything, we are proving to the outside that we have way too much spare time on our hands. Not only gaming in itself, but arguing and bickering over every little issue, even spending loads of time trying to influence the creative choices of the developers in the business. It's gotten out of hand.

I knew this would happen.

It's always the same with these stupid PR stunts, especially the EA ones. Remember those "Your Mum will hate it" Dead Sapce adverts? This sort of approach doesn't even appeal to the people they're marketing their product to, so heaven only knows what the people outside our gaming bubble are led to think of our precious "hobby."

Sometimes I'm made to feel like gaming as an activity is akin to cutting up bodies in my basement. Oh how appropriate.

In this case though, the uproar is once again coming from inside our own community. I seriously doubt any parents at all are aware of what collector's edition packages are being released every month. The statue caters to a small dedicated fanbase, it's not like they expect everyone to buy this. They know who their core fans is, and went for it. If you don't like it, you have a choice to ignore it. I'm quite sure if no one buys it, then Deep Silver might choose differently next time around. Anyways, I'll leave this alone now, such a nontopic does not need anymore attention.

I'm not particularly outraged at its existence because as a rational, grown person I can ignore its presence without throwing a tantrum. I also know that the majority of our community also thinks that it is tasteless, which is heartening for me at any rate. I just worry about the damage it does on the outside, even if, as you say, most people probably won't be aware of it. The problem is, when the gaming community is put in the spotlight it's normally because of these sorts of things and the fact that even our "own people" disagree with it will be lost on most.

But yes, this is a nontopic and it only serves to prove Deep Silver's point the more we talk about it.

I still don't understand why Mr.Dipshit or whoever wrote that blog post seems to think that a game developers decision and their decision alone (to release this memorabilia) is entirely representative of the 'gaming community' and now the 'gaming community needs to grow up a little bit'. Did we march down to their place and demand they make this? No, of course not, so how the fuck are any of us responsible for this? This is incredibly unfair.

I don't think Deep Silver made us look bad.
I think that the guy you quoted is over exaggerating, and that those who complain for this statue are hypocrites.
And I'll tell you why. Because this statue is just a statue of what you see in the game. That's what the game is all about.
That's what you are expecting to see coming with a collector's edition of a game,a physical item that is a replica of something that is founded inside the game. If you didn't liked dead bodies without limbs, you wouldn't play this game.
So how can you say that this is offensive, when it's just what this game is all about ? If you truly find bodies with their limbs cut out to be offensive, well guess what, then you probably shouldn't play this game either, and the series should be a failure.

Now the amount of exaggeration on criticizing this particular collector's edition item is ludicrous.
Using the same standards someone would describe Alduin's statue from Skyrim as "a hideous representation of the beast from Apocalypse targeted to Satan lovers". Don't you see how ridiculous and far-fetched that kind of critic is ?

Or is it because it's specifically the body of a woman, that is covered with a bikini, presenting a similar view as the one you would see on a beach during summer ? No,I'm wrong. Many women go topless on beaches.

Now in case you wonder,I didn't bought the collector's edition of this game.In fact I didn't bought the game at all neither its prequel, because I don't like zombies and I think just mutilating zombies is kinda dumb. But for people who like to tear apart the bodies of dead people and like watching that for hours on their screen,I can't see how they can be offended by having a replica of that in their rooms. Nobody serious enough is going to call you a psycho killer for having a stylized media prop on your house.

What are the complaints ? That it's the torso of a woman and not a mans ? That it wears a modern bikini and not full-covering body suit like those women wore on the 1930s ?
In my opinion I'm surprised so many people overreact over such trivial things.

Kinda have to agree with you here. The only thing I really see to complain about is the fact that such a lack luster item is used to represent the game. I actually played the game, though not to its conclusion as I ended up getting bored with it, but I hardly think a dismembered torso to be an accurate representation of what I'd see in the game. Sure I saw a fair amount of de-limbed bikini clad women on the beach in the first chapter, but from that point on it was a rarity. Why not include a bust of one of the cast of the game, or perhaps one of the special zombies. The bust itself was such a non sales point that it is the only reason to be upset with this bundle.

Look, it's a zombie game, and just with like zombie movies, scantily clad women and gore go hand in hand. Sure they could have chosen something else to be the statue, but then again you can't fault them play into this theme. It's funny how people are not upset about limbs missing, but that they show: BOOBS! You know, the most natural thing in the world. Killing and chopped off heads is nothing compared to BOOOOBS. It's a sick world indeed.

My take on the quote in the original post:

"HOW DARE SOMEONE HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES THAN I DO AND ENJOY THINGS I DO NOT WHOLEHEARTEDLY ENDORSE? HOW DARE THEY? AND BY ASSOCIATION EVERYONE WHO IS ALSO PART OF THis SUBCULTURE MUST SHARE THE NEGATIVE TRAITS I NOW ATTRIBUTE THESE PEOPLE I HAVE NEVER MET BASED ON A VERY SMALL SHRED OF EVIDENCE. NOW I SHALL THROW AROUND ACCUSATIONS OF SEXISM AND "MISGINYOI" OR WHATEVER IT'S CALLED SO NO-ONE DARES TO ARGUE WITH ME. MYSOGNYIO! MISGYNOI! MIYGNOSIE!"

My take on the Dead Island Ultra Limited Hardcore Boobies Edition:

Silly: Most definitely
Funny: Maybe, depending on your sense of humor.
Misogynistic: Nope, don't think so.

"Making all gamers look bad": Nope.

Deepsilver has joined the EA train of becoming part of the problem for everyone. A problem for the outside world because this is once again how they see gamers, and a problem for us, because Dead Island was straight up terrible.

Yeah, that seemed to take off when Australian politics had the hate speech...

I'm sure the dictionary will accept this new meaning like how it accepted "Me" as an alternative to "I"

*sigh* I hate modern culture...

OT: Yeah, I never quite liked Dead Island... In one hands-on preview with the devs they did a tutorial of all you could do, so they picked up a 2x4, and started wailing on a female zombie going like "you like that s**t? huh? oh yeah, you f***n love that... Imma wail on this b**ch for a while..."

So, I'm not really surprised... kinda hate how a select few companies decide the entire world's view on the gaming community as a whole...
