That game series/franchise you used to love, that you think have destroyed themselves?

What the title says, is there a game series you think has gone to far from it's roots and is better of dead, or is in serious need of a reboot?

As an example one of mine would be Rainbow Six, half of that game was about planning the operation, were you went down in just a bullet or two. To me, that was the definition of a tactical shooter.

Sadly, ever since the Raven Shield (3) I grew up on, they've just become more and more like standard shooters, and now we've got the Vegas games, they dont really seem to have much to do with the old ones anymore, and I doubt they are going to ever go back to what made the games so great in the first place.

And this theme still sends chills down my spine...

This is certainly not the only one, anyone else have a series they got ticked off about straying from what made it great?

Inb4 this thread is filled with people saying Sonic the Hedgehog.

OT: Only one I can think of is Pokemon, for me the first two generations were amazing fun but then Ruby and Sapphire knocked it off the track. I thought Diamond and Pearl where somewhat closer to the previous games that I have enjoyed so much, but some how had also gotten further away. I haven't gotten to play Black or White yet but i've heard mostly good things.

CALL OF DUTY...

Or as most may know it, that one game they announce a new version for every 2 minutes with hardly any changes. Most people probably don't even know the name of the game since they just buy it cause' it's mainstream and everybody else is doing it...

This is probably gonna be said a million times, but Call of Duty. I loved CoD 2 and CoD 4, Zombies was the best part of 5, and since then, that cash cow has been milked dry. The games aren't bad, but I want something new!!! (Except for Zombies, that will always suck me in...)

DAMN YOU NINJA!

But, yeah, Sonic. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still my favorite game of all time, and the one I always come back to. Nowadays, I can't even look at his games without my heart sinking a bit.

This is probably because of the horror thread, but Silent Hill.
I missed that immersive story and the subtle symbolism. The creeping atmosphere and being stuck with limited ammo, an average human character who's obviously not a fighter were all part of its appeal.

And if not that, maybe Dragon Warriors. I liked the gameboy games. I don't care for the direction its taken now.

UBI destroyed the Rainbow and Ghost Recon series and turned it into mainstream garb.

Red Storm Entertainment developed the older ones (which were alot more hardcore and tactical), NOT UBI.
Red Storm still develops Ghost Recon.

Halo

No, I never played it.

Uhhh... Oh, I got it.

Phantasy Star games. Here, lemme explain. A long time ago, Sega unveiled a series of newer RPGs that contained a good deal of originality and clever design to it. It was a whole new world. No, it was a system, the Algo Star System, in which every thousand years, a horrid evil would be unleashed upon the system. The creature (Dark Falz/Dark Force), was bent on corrupting the worlds which were its master's lock and key, thus they would have to be destroyed to release it.

The games took place every thousand years in the system's history. Except for the third one, which was on a colony ship FROM that system. The worlds would be re-imagined each time, until it came down to Phantasy Star 4, where Dark Force's creator (the Profound Darkness) was finally revealed and defeated, thus ending the series...except it didn't really end, did it? Now, I could see possible ways for the series to have continued in proper and certainly in the decent quality/tradition of the games I did enjoy, but this wasn't it.

So...Phantasy Star Online, Phantasy Star Universe, Phantasy Star Zero, and...I don't think any of them or any other recent incarnation does the same kind of justice. I don't really consider it the same series. They changed alot of things, leaving an imprint of what made it good too me only. It appeals to many others, but not to me. It really can't help it. It's...not Phantasy Star anymore. Let ME design a good addition to the series. I'm a writer! It can be done!

How is this thread not a nonstop posting of the words Call of Duty? Oh yeah, some people actually still think it's great, innovative fun :-S

Because there are way better series that have destroyed themselves, call of duty games at least have always been shooters and while it's getting milked to death it's really the same game as it's always been but in different settings, not to fond of them but as far as I can see they haven't "Broken" what made the games work in the first place.

Games like Ghost recon and Rainbow Six on the other hand, they used to be so much more than they are today.

I agree on the Ghost Recon bit, the first one was so awesome I finished it in no time flat cause I didn't stop playing it from the second I got it. I'd also like to add Resident Evil, go back to the creepy atmosphere of the first games, just give us the ability to shoot while moving, cause RE5 was a giant WTF for me.

I guess they thought it was too obvious
and probably because there are franchises that have been messing up for longer time

Empire Earth. I am a huge RTS fan, and the first Empire Earth was an awesome game. Empire Earth 2 was alrightish, but Empire Earth 3 made me weep and was also, incidentally, the first game I made use of the seven-day return policy for.

Meh, my sonic experiences are all from a Game Gear, dang, did I just show my age with that statement? Anyways, sonic games weren't really my cup of tea, I never really got their appeal, but I can see how people might not be to happy with the current abortions.
