Dragon age: Origins, Hearts of Iron III, and Modern Warfare II. There are probably way more on that list. Its the price of being a PC gamer who is sometimes suceptible to hype. But then again... it was hype that got me to buy Fallout 3 ^_^

Easily. When I was a young lad I bought with my birthday money a game called "Mario is Missing". Worst waste of money I've ever done. Made worse by the fact that in those days it was pretty much 2 games a year, one at Christmas and one on my birthday, so the fact that I wasted Half of my yearly game budget really stung. Sense then I always try to rent first whenever possible.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for the ds.
Being a HUGE fan of the FE series I simply went out and bought it, without even reading a review. I was somewhate destitute at the time, so I had to trade in several games, including Mass Effect, Chromehounds, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin and a few others, all of which I miss dearly. MAss Effect in particular, as my hard drive died two weeks later, along with my hundreds of hours of save files, so I still haven't played through ME2 with an imported Shepard.
And just to add insult to injury, FE:SD turned out to be one of the worst games I have ever played, and the single blemish on my favorite series of games. Everything about it makes me furious.
So yeah, that was the single worst decision I ever made.

Resi 4. All I heard were positive reviews, so I went and bought it. It wasn't until I really started playing did I realize that I hated it. It's not bad, per se, but the script is terrible, the puzzles staggered, and the combat obnoxiously frustrating.
Aren't all RE games that way?

OT: hmm... I don't really rent either - just look at reviews and peer suggestions. Steam works well that way. Probably MW2 for the gimped PC version, not to mention it doesn't feel anywhere near as awesome as MW did. Still hate myself for losing my MW mp key code though...

WCW/nWo Thunder for the original playstation.

It was the first game I ever bought with money I had earned, and boy was it ever a waste.

Prototype. It wasn't bad, but I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. Should have waited and bought it used or rented.
I rented it and beat it then immediately took it back it was worth the rental but got boring afterwards... I could have went around the city completing those little missions or eating people for their memories but it wasn't that fun.

I bought mercenaries 2 and its really boring to me but i never really liked the GTA series either unless i put in the cheats to turn the city into a warzone where you could run into an old lady wielding a rocket launcher or flamethrower

Borderlands. I bought it because all my friends told me it was awesome. After several hours of killing the same enemies over and over again with basically the same gun I just lost interest.
Some people I find are just like that, I for one love that feeling as you find a weapon which is even more powerful than your already ridiculous gun, to bad all of my GFWL and Gamespy games hard-lock my compy now, must get around to fixing that...

Also guilty of Just cause 2 and Far Cry 2, also Frontlines fuel of war. None are horrible, I've never been silly enough to buy a game soley on impulse, but they do just sit on the shelf mocking me with their dusty cases. And no, I don't trade games. In Australia we pay $90-$120 per game and stores offer you $30-$40 max. but usually $20-$25 and I refuse to be bent over and violated like that. They are a reminder to me to be careful in the future.

Just Cause 2. Fun for the first few hours every so often, but without cheat codes to fuck around with it loses it's touch pretty easily. The lack of anything to do other than blowing things up gets boring.

The concept of renting no longer applys to me - well over half my games I simply bought without actually renting them first. Out of my 24 games for PS3, the only one I regret buying was Guitar Hero: Metallica. Every other game I own I enjoyed.
