THE INTERNET! i got nothing... i have had this tons of times but i cant think of anything.
EDIT: Twilight Princess on the Wii, i was reading so much about it and thought the motion controls were going to be way more used than they were... like using the nunchuck as the string on the bow and arrow.

Electric fencing. I envisioned it as fencing with some extreme-cattle-prod/lightsaber device that reduces your opponent to a smoldering pile of ash, but as it turns out it's just a way to make scoring easier.

Do you know anything that at first sounds really cool until you know what it really is?

For example Plasma cutting...I thought that sounded cool, until I found out it was basicly cutting metal with an ingreadably hot stream of argon.
I can't think of anything right now, but may I ask a question?

What did you expect plasma cutting to be, and how is cutting metal with an ionized argon stream not awesome?

Also: Wait, what? Plasma is ionized gas, right? How can you ionize argon?
Argon is a gas?
I think it is. The reason I figured it would be hard to ionize is because it has a full outer shell, which means that it's not very keen to let go of electrons.

An American Affair starring Gretchen Mol

Sooo cool: Spy thriller about a woman who knows about secret CIA missions involving JFK. And she gets her tits out! I love Gretchen Mol's tits!

Not so cool: Terrible period piece drama of a young kid's (Cameron Bright) coming of age while spying on his next door neighbour (Mol), one of JFK's former lovers. Yes, Mol gets her tits out, but it's not worth watching this tripe.

(It is a bad movie, my ire does not solely stem from disappointment).

Well NASCAR is so cool it has a 6-letter abbreviation, but watching it can be simulated by flushing a bag of M&Ms down the toilet.
Hehehe, I am sooo going to film that and put it on YouTube!

For my contribution: Zero Point energy. Half Life makes it sound awsome what with it bei ng able to change gravity and all... yeah it's basically just describing something that's really cold. Meh.
actually, Zero Point energy is the -theoretical, after making some observations that seemed a bit wonky- energy left over AFTER the temperature of everything in the universe is brought down to Absolute Zero; that is, all motion has ceased (there is no energy left), entropy (should have) won. the question then becomes: "Where the hell does this energy come from? what does it do? can we manipulate the fabric of the universe with it (since it seems to be integral)?" etc. It doesn't actually describe the cold stuff.

I heard something about a Magnetic Rail Gun from the military army research it sounded freaking awesome.
Dos magnetically accelerating a chunk of metal to hypersonic speeds and really FUCKING the target up really STOP being awesome? Also, did you really hear about it first from military research? and you're on a gaming forum -sci-fi is often best when the "sci" is used properly; if anything, they are depicted improperly or they get confused with coilguns, which do the same thing in a different manner- and you didn't just look them up to find out if they were real? Which i did ith 'Davey Crocktts' when i played MGS3-big recoilless rifle used to fire a small NUKE. NOTE: minimum safe distance was SHORTER than maximum range; still awesome, just not for the gunnery team.
EDIT: THIS SHOULD SAY THE OPPOSITE: the RANGE is SHORTER than minimum safe distance. sorry.

"Synthetic"?
This usually applies to elements that can not be found in nature, this is owing to an incredibly high level of radioactivity meaning they have a half life that is incredibly short.

For example, astatine is only found in tiny amounts in nature, so it is usually synthesised in a laboratory environment.

However, to my knowledge, the best example of an synthetic element is Ununoctium as it doesn't exist in nature at all and only nine molecules or something like that have ever been created.

Engineering.
It's basically being a physicist who acts like a carpenter. However, in doing so, you're smarter than any average man.

Animation is also a lot more glorified by movies than the nitty gritty work of making it.

That's not entirely correct. For starters it cannot describe the entire universe being reduced to absolubte zero, that can't happen (assuming current laws of physics are true, also assuming that energy can't leak out of the universe as a whole). It describes the lowest actual amount of energy a particular system can have; due to some funky quantum mechanics a system cannot actually reach the theoretical absolubte zero (when you start looking at the particles small enough that they don't obey the laws of Newtonian Physics an "absolubte zero" is impossible for several reasons such as the Uncertainty Principle and Quantum Tunneling). And this is why it has to be one system within the universe and not the universe itself: according to the first law of Thermodynamics energy cannot be lost or created: any energy you take out of the system MUST go somewhere else (i.e. the rest of the universe gets a little bit hotter).

This is a good thing! You want the minimum safe distance to be shorter than the maximum range, it's if it isn't then you end up as so much radioctive dust.

yah...argon is a noble gas...how do you ionize it??? Plasma cutting just became cool again.

My school being the first school to receive a grant for iPod Touches for each student.

Sounds cool that you'll be getting an iPod, but most of the space is already taken up by apps for each department. I mean we'll be able to remove the worthless ones we don't need anymore, like say French since I'm not in it, or child care. They've removed the App store, (I understand why) and after removing the useless apps there's only enough space for 100 songs.

Happens tomorrow, so I wonder how the year will work out.

They became less cool for me when I found out the majority of them needed to be cooled down to almost absolute zero (I think they may have found exceptions, i can't remember if they have now) for then to function.

Oh and Welcome to the Escapist. I think I need to say something about the basement but I forget now.

oops, i fucked up writing that about the DCs; it should read: RANGE is SHORTER than the MSD...

on the Zero Point Energy, i'm basically repeating the explanation I had read (in several places) of what it means. I may be misremembering it.
the Wikipedia entry has big, sophisticated words, and >GULP< MATH... brrr...
Heisenberg comes into play.... and ground states.. and things.

i won't pretend to understand quantum mechanics. i doubt more'n 5 people REALLY do...

and just because the energy (according to theory) has to go 'somewhere' it doesn't mean it has to go back into THIS universe.

ummm. there's a bad pun in there...

and they're WORKING on room temperature superconductors, at least..

Osmosis! Oh great, the movement of water from a dilute to a concentrated solution through a membrane... yay.
Hey! I love osmosis, hypo and hypertonic solutions 'n stuff! I even wrote on an exam that a red blood cell in a hypotonic solution is asplode! I got full credit too. Maybe it's just because I love saying big words like "Zwitterion" and "plasmolyze".

Sorry about that mini rant. No disrespect cool?

OT: Dead Rising. When I finally got the game (about 6 months ago) I couldn't stand it.
