I found Toms owner from Tom & Jerry to be a bit of a racist stereotype

There are two hysterical retcons of that being released lately. The first is the original voice with slender white legs replaced for the original, and the other is a man with an accent-free voice. The first one is hilarious because of the incongruity, and the other is just weird because it seems too contrived, as if they're trying to avoid 50 racist and sexist stereotypes simultaneously, and just drawing attention to the fact through their efforts.

OT (again): Do they still show Speedy Gonzalez cartoons? I loved that character when I was a kid, but I don't think I've seen a single one in almost a decade.

He's still around, got a job advertising broadband and TV for Virgin here in the UK so maybe he's decided to get out of the toon business for a while....like a carer brake or something.

Well, he'll probably lose that soon, too. There probably aren't enough Latin Americans in the UK for the populace to collectively deem the cartoon offensive. Call it a "Critical Mexican Mass". Thanks for letting me know he's still around, though!

Racism today tends to forget people are mean,apathetic and stereotypical to X, Y or Z. And thus go out of way of logic and reason to re correct reality by saying if it looks like it might slight the apparent minority its world shattering maddens but if it slights in the other direction its A ok family friendly good laughs.

I personnally, as a white, see nothing wrong with the use of the word black. However I would always go on waht that person in particualr prefers be it black, coloured, negro, etc. Best not to cause rows I think.

Can you think of anything, probally when you were a kid that was fine, but if done now would be shunned, or bad mouthed as being none P.C.

For example when I was young and my mum was out later than expected my dad would say maybe she has been taken away by a large black man.

When I was younger my Mother (who grew up in Malaysia) would constantly tell us to not marry a Muslim girl. I was about 5 when this started, and I didn't know what a Muslim was, nor why I would want to marry a girl. She still repeats this "warning" even now. She doesn't hate Muslims (so she says) she's just terrified of any of her grandkid's being Muslim. I have suggested that this might be a tad bit judgemental and intolerant on her part. She insists that she's not racist (she's chinese, and she insists that because she's chinese, it is somehow "impossible" for her to be racist. I don't argue with her. Nothing good comes out of arguing with her).

So for a long time, I always had it in my head to never Marry a Muslim girl. Of course, I had no idea why (she would never tell me) or even what a Muslim was until I was much older.

So that was a bit racist - well, since Islam isn't a race but a religion (FACT: over 300 million Muslims aren't Arab, but Malay! Yes, it's true! There's plenty of white muslims in Russia and Persians are not Arabs!) it was more of an intolerance.

Of course, I don't hold such views now. I would be fine with marrying a muslim woman if I loved her, except that I suspect, no Muslim woman would ever want to marry me (I am a pretty strident atheist and a fanatical secularist).

At the time they were considered just cute cuddly dolls for the kiddies but now we look at them and see the racism behind making dolls of stereotypical depictions of black people. But at the time, it wasn't a problem.

Same with some of the older Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoons, nothing hurts more really then to see beloved cartoon characters mocking ethnics by pretending to be in the Black and White minstrel show, but there you go.

racism is overblown these days. there are whole organizations to dealing with racism. in my opinion the NAACP is far more racist than most people. if white people had an organization that gave out awards ONLY to white people they would get the s#$@ sued out of them in seconds, however, the NAACP is allowed to do this. they also blow alot of crap out of proportion.

Over here, an old phrase (which I say quite often) is now considered racist for some reason. The term was 'Haq it-Toroq' which literally translates into "Damn the Turks" or "Fuck the Turks". The actual phrase means bad luck, but insults Turks because of our history. It's now considered very racist, to the point where I was sent out of class for saying it.

There was a lot of bitching about that despite the name existing for decades, now they're just called "kisses" except by, well, everyone who talks about them. Just the labels have changed.

Also, what still isn't considered racism, despite some bitching about it 2 years ago or so, is the Sinterklaas fest which is going on right now. There's this dude called Sinterklaas, where Santa Claus got his name from, who roams the country with his helpers named Black Pete (all orchestrated in a lie for children so grand that Santa Claus pales in comparison), there's a ton of them but they're all named like that (like Gift-Wrapping Pete, Roof-Climbing Pete, etc etc). I won't say much else about it, a picture suffices:

Everyone in my primary school was quite racist. It was all white people, with a handful of black children, and the area I'm in is less than great so a lot of people would be racist because their parents were. One time when I was walking home my mum was telling another parent a story that ended in dissatisfaction, so I said "damn paki". The other children laughed because they found it funny, and I got a smack on the head. I had no idea what it meant.

I have no idea what it means...

My dad brought me up Christian, and we were really into the whole "God loves all people equally" thing, so I was never exposed to racism as a young kid.

Seriously, I have no idea what people are talking about, I only found out about the n-word in middle school.

One time at the store I was working at, some lady came in complaining about some of the other customers, (yeah, they were a little loud, but they were also children, they didn't know better) and it was only later that my boss explained to me that she wasn't talking about raccoons. (I don't want to post the word she really used, but it was a shortened version)
Had I realized what she meant, I would not have listened politely...

But I did make a large "We're taking it back!" banner and put that on our house's porch whenever we sat on it drinking.

as a young child I saw my first black person. I reached up at him from my stroller and said, "basketball man." My mom was mortified but the guy the thought it was kinda funny.

I did something similar, but it was with my Dad's Group Captain in the RAF when I was about six. I went up to him and said "You're brown!" My Dad thought that he was going to get sacked but the Group Captain just laughed and said "Yes, I am".

I love it when kids do things like that. You really don't know how to do anything, but laugh beacuse you know their to young to try to offend you. As long as they don't drop the N bomb I take things like this with a smile.

When me and my sister were kids, we would watch The Cosby Show, and refer to it as "The chocolate people show." I haven't said it since then, but I don't think it would be accepted these days.
