I work for the Canadian Forces (Army Reserve), my job is secure. I'm also a student right now, but if the degree fails to pan out in a worst-case scenario, I can full-time it and make a good living.

It's affecting my family a bit, but I personally can ride it out.

Governments are retracting funding from the arts sector, my chosen area of profession. So job opportunities are poor just as I finish my degree.. I'm competing in a Arts starved state with at least 16 other graduates... It's a *****.

You're a idiot. There has been a economic dowturn. Massive lay-offs and there is higher unemployment (you're america right? 7.2% last time i checked). And there is most certainly a shortage of honest work.

But to me, i couldn't buy an over-priced but way to shiny to resist computer from america due to the pound hiting the floor. Bar that not really, i have two steady jobs and mimimal overheads. Oh and i bought some nice theads in the massive christmas sales.

My mother is a teacher, so her job is safe.
What makes you think Teachers are safe? Around here, Teachers are directly in the firing line. I know more than a few teachers that may not have jobs, come September.
My Internet failed me when I was about to post a reply, so I'll be quick:

20 years of experience, tons of thanks from other teachers, principals and parents. And school isn't too poor, either - to avoid money problems, every year one teacher has to resign from working. He gets 80% of his pay, but he's free to do whatever he wants, and he still earns money for doing nothing. The bad thing is that you can't transfer it, so if you need that 20% more, and someone else would want a break, you can't make a deal.

Also, the school has recently purchased furniture for few classes, new computers and so on. In Poland, the safest jobs right now have policemen, teachers and firefighters. And soldiers, seeing as you must now agree to join the army. 2008 was the last year people were forced to go to army. Of course, they could leave or refuse to join, but leaving is possible only if you have served few years (I think 3 was minimum), you had an important family event (death, birth or something as important). You could also refuse if you were crippled, disabled in any way (for example, asthma or alergy) or if you were a student.

The least safe now are doctors, because there were a lot of lay-offs few months ago and it may occur again.

No. actually... Been pretty uneventful, might be due to how we spend, using stores like Costco to buy bulk, but we've done that for years. Both parents work (actually work, unlike 60% of the people there)for the county, so the chances of them losing their jobs are well... near none.

I've got a fairly stable job, the company I work for doesn't take many risks so we're financially stable unless things really go bad. My Girlfriend on the otherhand... her boss has gone insane because of economic downturn, he's like the captain of a sinking ship who, to inspire his crew members to row to shore, has just lit a fuse on the ships powder magazine.

Which is why out of the 15 + places I've applied I can't get hired despite a good work history and a Supervisor position at my first job...

Well, having graduated from university and being on the lookout for a career orientated job, this recession has really made employers more picky about who they hire. Companies can generally not afford to train new candidates and so experience in the field of work is always more valuable than academics. As such I find myself stuck in a catch 22 situation where I can only get a job by having experience, but can't get any relevant experience since noone will hire me.

Fortunatly I have no woes in terms of bills and food etc since I'm living comfortably at home, regardless of how much I want my own place.

If you want to buy PC hardware, get it from MSY Technologies. They have stores around the country. I bought my current PC for $1900 or so about a year ago, when the same system would have cost me double elsewhere.
That's the thing. It was MSY.

True, but there's a severe shortage of decent work. Call me picky, but I refuse to work for big supermarket/fast food chains, because they pay around AUS$6 per hour (they seem to love taking advantage of Minors). I've found one at my local video rental shop, but I'm editing my Resume at the moment to look presentable.

Looks like that website will be going out of business soon. They need to drop their prices, not increase them.
That's exactly what I was thinking when I counted up the amount I had to pay.

Right after the heart attack.

Well, for starters, I can't find a fucking job. No one I've talked to can, either.

My entire family takes this out on me; despite all the explinations I've given her to the contrary, despite everything that's happened, my grandmother still seems to think it's no one's fault but mine that I can't get a job.
Everyone blames the market or the recession or someone else when they can't find work. Usually it boils down to laziness or lack of willingness to do honest work because it's 'beneath them.'

I'm a- sorry AN idiot, huh? Actually, I'm in Australia and things are pretty decent here. No shortage here.

You see? There's your exact fucking problem. You "won't" work for _____ because it's too low paying or beneath you. You know what? Those jobs are still jobs, and given your indication you're a minor, they're the best you're going to damn well get until you've got experience.

I started as a telemarketer for an internet provider, then I moved onto life insurance and now I have a great job that pays me $28 an hour to write emails, not to mention other bonuses. And all it took was a year of crappy telemarketing to waltz into it.

I do so apologise, i saw the dollar sign and made an assumption. I did however read this http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/nickbryant/ about Australia strong economic form.

Hm, the Recession here in the states is pretty killer. Finding a job here in S.Jersey is pretty ridiculous. My dad lost his job a few months ago due to the company looking at their employees as disposable and not assets. But we all know that about big business. So all the bills fall in my mother's lap. Granted, my mom is safe with her speech pathologist job for the school system, but it's still hard. I had to take off a semester from school because it was too much strain on my mom alone. I have a little job that helps me pay for my cell bill, any little clothes I get, food and going out with my boyfriend. Of course my hours were cutback, but I'm still thankful I have a job. As a family, we had to make cutbacks on what we buy and really budget my mom's spending.

It's such a headache and pretty depressing to watch my mom struggle because my dad can't get a job. Ah well. Can't wait to move out again. Yeesh.

Nope my job is secure and actually I get paid very well in addition to my employer paying for my bachelor's degree.

Yes its the US army. This year I will earn approximately $50K and that's not counting the medical and dental benefits as well as the free college. I don't deploy overseas (well haven't yet its possible I could) I work at a strategic satellite control terminal, we get training and experience on all the latest technology in the field, and if I were to get out with just that experience alone step into a job paying in the six figure range just starting out.

No problems up here in Alberta other than American companies laying off workers but i saw that happening. It is slowing down but i think in terms of what the rest of the country is going through we're kinda the ones holding it together. Now i'm not trying to sound i dunno superior just stating the facts and what i've noticed. Then again i work for an American retail store so i could be gone in a matter of seconds lol
