Absolutely incredible scenes.

So, the Conservative Party aims to complete the leadership contest within a week. This means they don't have time to go through the usual process (which involves balloting the MPs repeatedly, removing the lowest-scoring candidates until only 3 remain, and then submitting the top 2 of those to a ballot of party members).

The likelihood is that the new Prime Minister will be decided by a sole ballot of MPs. Graham Brady may just instruct MPs to decide on a single candidate, so that they can bypass the members' vote without needing to formally change the rules.

There's already a movement among Tory MPs to bring back Boris Johnson, who resigned in disgrace a mere 3 months ago. The other likeliest candidates are former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who lost to Truss in the last leadership election, and Penny Mordaunt. Maaaaaybe Ben Wallace.

I rather wanted Truss to limp on, because I think she's the most damaging candidate for the Conservative Party, and would probably have seen them wiped out at the next election-- current polling indicates the SNP would have a shot at becoming the official opposition to a Labour government if an election were held now.
I think Bojo was damaging to the Tories but I think it made little difference

I also think Truss hasn't been that much of a difference to Bojo. Kinda show how much he was able to get away with

I'm not to sure about that. Bojo might be intensely shady and not very competent, but even he didn't go around trying to implement economy destroying policies based on decades out of date economic thinking.

Well, aside from Brexit but that's easier too market then ''lol lets take money from the poor and give it all to the rich''

I know this is a crazy thought but hear me out:

Dr. Who.

I know the Doctor is not actually a real person and an alien to boot, but beyond that, can s/he be any worst then the last 4 or so?

Sorry, I don't have much serious to say because the about of shit in the shitshow is just a marvel to behold and I'm an American who is used to stupid shitty politics and I'm honestly kind of at a loss how to react here.
In NuWho, the Master became PM of the UK, and was later said not to be the worst they've had...so...

Meanwhile no one is talking about the negative impact of Brexit.
Brexiteers sure have been lucky, they were given Covid, than the war in Ukraine and finally Liz Truss. What will it be in 6 months?
Yeah, it'll have to be something really...wait...the above quote gives me an idea.

If the Conservatives allow Boris to return to No. 10 I will be out on the street protesting and I won't be the only one.

If Johnson returns as PM, I expect we'll see a (small) number of Tory MPs resign or defect-- no more than 2 or 3, if that. And a small proportion of Tory voters will complain about democratic standards but most will ultimately fall in line, because democratic standards don't actually mean very much to conservatives.

If you're out on the street protesting, you'll be in the company of Labour, Lib Dem, SNP and Plaid supporters, but bugger all conservative voters. The latter have long since signed their party over to personality cult bullshit and are happy to follow for the sake of another grasping chance at power.

24 hours before the deadline, only Thatcherite gimp Rishi "I fucking warned you about Truss" Sunak has the necessary support of 100 MPs, at least publicly, with 144 saying they'll back him. Disgraced former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has 56. If he gets the 100 he'll be home free as he'd easily win the Tory party members' vote, but the MPs don't seem as keen. Also appearing in this government Penny Mordaunt has 23, shoved into third place for the second leadership contest in a row. That leaves 134 MPs yet to declare their support for any candidate.

Tory leadership contests. It's a bit like watching your firing squad argue about which bullet they are going to shoot you with.

I don't think I've ever seen the country in such an utter fucking shambles.

Between 2017 and 2018 there was a minor constitutional crisis in Australia regarding Section 44 of our Constitution which prohibited the holding of dual citizenship. This small farce saw the eventual removal - by either pre-emptive resignation or High Court order - of 15 members of parliament between the upper and lower Houses of Parliament.

So there’s that.

In a small act of mercy, Boris Johnson has announced he isn't standing, presumably meaning he hasn't got the support necessary and/or he knows he'll be suspended as an MP.

There is the perfect PM right in front of our faces. i speak of course about Larry the cat.

Sure, he's going to be unpopular with the mice and dog voters, but very popular with cat lovers. Plus, that cat has seen so many Prime Ministers in his time, he must have learnt something from them all. He can't possibly do any worse than the rest of them. Plus, he isn't secretly a Bond villain like Rishi Sunak.

Feel we're on course for Austerity 2.0: Deep Shit.
Which bodes ill because anger over austerity was likely one of the things that caused Brexit. A sizable amount of voters probably didn't have any strong feelings one way or the other but just wanted to give the establishment and Cameron a bad day.

Brexit and most populist causes in general have a strong contingent of supporters who primarily see it as a middle finger to the government rather than something they truly believe in. And austerity greatly helped awaken such sentiments.

Reading his statement gives the impression he expects to be running the show for the 2024 GE.

I think it's more that he believes that if reinstated he could avert the necessity for an early general election and possibly turn around the Tories' dire polling numbers by that time. At the moment it looks like Sunak may have to call an election in 2023 at the latest, as the financial crisis really starts to bite and he's forced to rewrite the Conservative policy platform yet again, and given the current polling it's not impossible that the Conservatives could lose badly enough that they wouldn't even be the official opposition.
