Right so, I've sent in my applications to join the UK army as an officer, and this has been met with a fairly unanimous response.
"Don't do that, you'll die"
I know it's a possibility, but that's surely taking a very negative ground, right?? I mean, in the UK I've worked it out to be around a 0.1% death count.
What're your opinions on this?? I just think everyone is a bit overbearing on this issue,
(Also please don't post anti war speeches, it's not a hate contest, merely a question)
Do it if you wanna. Don't let anyone tell you what to do, it's your life. I personally wouldn't because I don't think getting shot at in real life is as much fun as the computer games make it seem, but hey it's not up to me.
Chances of dying are realistically quite slim but certainly within the realms of possiblity.
Chances of sustaining an injury which will last you for the rest of your life and potentially mess up future career opportunities and/or relationships, are much higher. Far from a certainty, but it's something you should consider as possible and not uncommon, especially if you're keen to "see action".
Ross Kemp did an excellent documentary series where he followed UK soldiers into Afghanistan to see what life was like for them. Search "Ross Kemp Afghanistan" on YouTube and you'll find the whole series (in fact there is more than one series, watch them all), I highly recommend you give it a look if you haven't already. It discusses the lifestyle and also the risks in a very frank, detailed fashion, without sensationalising anything or pulling any punches. He doesn't moralise about the war or push a political point, he just tries to see what it's like for soldiers on the front lines. Essential viewing for anyone considering military service.
