UK army I think all there deaths right now come from natural causes but I live in america I'll never join because they practically prepare you to die in the army here with the small small training, crap armor on vehicles, no control among troops, and they throw you in a country to police a area with killers wanting you dead, etc.
Umm...what?

If the UK military is anything like the US military, as an officer, you'll end up just sitting around complaining about stupid stuff. I know my division officer won't ever shut it. Blah blah blah, procedures, blah blah, why arn't you cleaning on watch, blah blah.

I'm an NCO in the US Navy. Its actually pretty rewarding. Nothing is more fun than teaching a few E4s and E3s how to pull apart a high pressure air reducer.

You can die any time.

At least this way you're trained and armed.

My general response is 'but you're so nice'. Then again that's from my parents (how long will that delusion last I wonder?).
Also, just some friendly advice you may have heard before and will probably hear again: when you get put into command of a squad, listen to your senior NCOs. Don't be intimidated by their experience (or anybody else's for that matter), use it. Because when you first get out there, they'll know what they're doing. You won't. Use their experience.
On that note, good luck.

That small, small training can be a *****.
But you cant help but respect the US army for their preparedness...

Don't bother saying "Serious thread here now"

Here on The Escapist, we are very serious... and very pro-army. Well, we are. A bit. I mean, most of our members are army/ex army members. Well, some of them.

...you get the idea.

My opinion? If it's what you want to do, all the power to you man. Both my parents are/were military, so I'm probably a bit biased when it comes to the armed forces, but having talked with them both about their time in the service I've heard quite a bit of good (which actually took me by surprise, as my father did two tours overseas in the Middle East and I was sort of expecting him to gripe about that).

I know it's a possibility, but that's surely taking a very negative ground, right?? I mean, in the UK I've worked it out to be around a 0.1% death count.

What're your opinions on this?? I just think everyone is a bit overbearing on this issue,

(Also please don't post anti war speeches, it's not a hate contest, merely a question)
Do it if you wanna. Don't let anyone tell you what to do, it's your life. I personally wouldn't because I don't think getting shot at in real life is as much fun as the computer games make it seem, but hey it's not up to me.

Chances of dying are realistically quite slim but certainly within the realms of possiblity.

Chances of sustaining an injury which will last you for the rest of your life and potentially mess up future career opportunities and/or relationships, are much higher. Far from a certainty, but it's something you should consider as possible and not uncommon, especially if you're keen to "see action".

Ross Kemp did an excellent documentary series where he followed UK soldiers into Afghanistan to see what life was like for them. Search "Ross Kemp Afghanistan" on YouTube and you'll find the whole series (in fact there is more than one series, watch them all), I highly recommend you give it a look if you haven't already. It discusses the lifestyle and also the risks in a very frank, detailed fashion, without sensationalising anything or pulling any punches. He doesn't moralise about the war or push a political point, he just tries to see what it's like for soldiers on the front lines. Essential viewing for anyone considering military service.

People are so paranoid nowadays.
They're probably looking out for you, but it's your life.
And if you do die (which you won't) at least you died doing something honourable.

I envy you. I've thought about joining the army, but who would I be dieing for? Spoiled Americans who watch American Idol? I'm not dieing for that. I'd just as soon strap a bomb to my chest and jihad the nearest Taylor Swift concert.

If I had the chance to serve a true country like Great Britain (or the United Kingom in general), I'd go for it.
I think I love you.

On a more serious note, go for it. I might join you in a couple years. A tip though, everyone hates the officers, they get a reputation for being spineless, set a good example.

Join the RAF, then you'll be fine. The only people you might just fight don't even have planes.

You might if not probebly wont get killed. Brutaly maimed yes as thats the way modern forces seek to act these days. An injured soldier is more of a drain on an economy than a dead one.
