I also never died in either Assassin's Creed during my second playthrough of those.
The only reason I ever died was accidentally jumping off buildings...

same. Assassins Creed 2 wasn't really that hard.

I made it through my entire second playthrough without falling to my death. I was mighty cautious. :)

Respawns aside - Lets take Resident Evil 5: If Wesker just KILLED YOU instead of talking to you whenever he gets a chance youd be done for in seconds. In COD your just some soldier whod die like everyone else. Fallout 3 i can sorta justify it since its in the late future, and i like to think that the whole thing is one big sim; GOW youd die in minutes, GTA 4 can be done without dieing with a bit of practice... Alot of practice i suppose.

Antagonists are mostly superior, theyre just too narrow minded to make use of what they have.
For example, GTA IV. Pegorino has a small army, and he sends one or two carfulls of people after you at once. Imagine if he sent EVERYONE. Same in F3 or GOW. Every single Enclave or Locust vs You.

Ill stop now :/
You make an excellent point, but to follow your Fallout 3 point, since the world is all but destroyed, it would make it nearly impossible for the Enclave to know where you are at any given time. This makes it very impractical for them to send their entire army after you considering they are at war with the Brotherhood of Steel. Also, they do not necessarily know how big of a threat you pose to them.

If Bioshock counts, so does the Prince of Persia's horrible memory. "Hmm, did I really fall into that 300 ft spiked pit of fiery doom? I can't seem to remember..."
you could say the same about assassins creed as well. Oh and i also finished resident evil 4 a couple of times without dying, just because it's so short and i liked it a lot

Playing through the game a second time is almost the same as using a continue, you are trying again. I mean't when you didn't know what was coming(First Playthrough).

Well, let's face it. In games, you're not that "cautious afraid to get hurt" person that you are in real life.

You can just jump down 30 stories with no fear and get sliced over and over and over without the slightest sign of pain for example.
Not like you, in Prince of Persia, stand idly and think.
"Okay, that's a REALLY tall jump. Okay... Okay... You can do this... Just... No, that's too far."

If you were cautious to begin with, although how boring and time consuming it might be, you would have a great chance on surviving through it all without losing 1 life.
So, it's the shear stupidity of your character that makes the bad guy win basically.

You can't die in Assasin's Creed because your character is only going through a simulation. On second tought, maybe you could die in the finale of AC2 but if you came that far you wouldn't be killed that easely. I only played AC2 though, so I have no idea about AC1.

Also a technicality: RTS games where you're not really a physical unit on the map and therefore cannot be killed, no matter what the enemy throws at you. You lose your base and your men, but not your life.

I liked the way they did it in Arkham Asylum - if you're beaten, the main antagonist of that section gets a mini-cutscene where they mock you before leaving your dying ass behind and getting back to the usual business of being an evil tosspot.

prince of persia SOT and WW i both finished without a real death in one go, two thrones only on the 13th run or something, but that was on hard by then.
EVERYONE can finish zelda without dieing... especialy windwaker, boomerang plus grapling hook is invincibility XD

and GOW is quite possible,... if you play with two players.

Just play MGS3 and try to die, every time you die it says "Time Paradox", because in the story of the game, the hero is supposed to win, that's the same with every game out there.

Keava explained it way better than i did, but i just wanted to add an example.
Something like that happens in Silent Hill 3, the bad guys need Heather to birth god so when they kill her Valtiel resurects her. I think you can only see Valtiel taking Heather on a few ocassions, I never have only in Youtube.

Good counter - They wouldnt have the resources for one seemingly irrelevant adversary.

This is so blatant i'm sure someone else has already brought it up but games are just designed this way purposely.

You are meant to die or at least have a high possibility of death in most scenarios or else where is the challenge and more to the point in a game usually the reason you die at all is simply because its a game and you have respawns so you can just go round all guns blazing where as if they made games without repawns then you would play more realistically and conservatively and i expect most games could be beaten in one life but who would want to as it would be so boring and take you ages to get anywhere and it probably wouldn't be any fun as most games aren't meant to be played like that and were designed with the multi-life safety net in mind.

Oh and on a slightly pedantic note technically you do complete the GTA games in one life as you return to the game outside of a hospital presumably where you have been nursed back to health, they must have the best medical care in the world......

In most video games the main antagonist are narrow minded for gameplay purposes. They usually hold back and their minions are sent in waves. In a practical scenario (you're actually the protagonist) he'd just obliterate you with his superior weapons. It may be unrealistic, but it makes for a more enjoyable gaming experience...
