No one seems to know who Devin Townsend is despite him being the greatest heavy metal artist ever.

I'm not joking, the man has not written one bad song and I have all his albums.
But Devin is awesome, more people should listen to his stuff.

NightWish, Gob, Gamma Ray, HammerFall,Edguy, Modest Mouse (two years ago), and maybe Freezepop.
I love Hammerfall and Nightwish.

Basically, any band on the NuclearBlastEurope channel/label on youtube. I've found about 4 new awesome bands that most of my friends have never heard of.

Three bad jacks

they are a psychobilly group from LA. ive never heard of them myself untill they played at a local venue. Saw them and they kick ass. They actually do their own pyrotechnics during shows. the only pyrotechnics though is when the drummer does a drum solo, they set one of the symbols on fire. and the bass player uses a stand up bass to play. and during his solo, they set the side of the bass (facing away from the player for obvious reasons) on fire. but the bass has stuff on it that will let the fire burn, but it wont damage the bass. its really cool.

hells yes, there are very few people i know who have heard of them. Rumble Club is a similar band.

i tend to stick to more 'mainstream' psychobilly acts though, stuff like Rezurex, 12 step rebels, nekromantix, Koffin Kats, and zombie ghost train.

And I'm sure no one around here has heard of Calabrese

Pilot Speed? Like, why aren't they famous right now? Into The West is a solid gold album, with that song from the Death Sentence soundtrack. Dig it.

Extreme. the worst part is not that they are not known of but the fact that they are only known for one soppy ballad but they have the best guitarist in the world...Nuno Betterncourt for god.

also, Hot Leg. the band Justin Hawkins created them after the Darkness. saw them as a support act for Extreme.

Slow Club, they're this adorable little folk duet from Sheffield, with - Wait for it - Darkly humorous, YET BEAUTIFUL, lyrics. I love them to bits.

I listen to this obscure indy band, that I'm surprised no one else has heard of, called the Jonas Brothers. These guys ROCK! Seriously, check them out. They are a little hard to find, but if you search around for them and you will eventually get some of their AMAZING stuff. Try for the vinyl if you can find it. Thats the classic stuff!

Most of my favorite bands are from other countries, and most of them are symphonic or melodic metal, death metal, gothic metal, folk metal or industrial music, so naturally it's hard for me to have a conversation with anyone in the US about music in general. In my opinion most of these bands are superior to the typical stuff you here in the US because there are so many more elements they use in their music. For example a metal band might use your typical guitar/drums/bass but a symphonic metal band might add in an entire orchestra. To me the music sounds so much richer and deeper and more worthwhile. Anywise, here's my list of bands I love that almost no one I know has heard of (without me having introduced them to it first):

Nightwish (They're starting to actually become more known in the states but not until recently when they started touring here)

Ensiferum

Battlelore

Kalmah

Eluveitie

Angelspit

Tristania

Sirenia

Within Temptation

Dark Moor

Rhapsody of Fire (probably more known in the US but still a bit obscure)

Dark Tranquility

and a bunch more that I won't go on to list at the moment...
huh I know about half the bands you are talking about
O.T. Korpiklaani
<youtube=0EoJpNSSWTQ>
and austrian death machine (mostly likely be proven wrong on this one)
<youtube=FtA3fxtbYvY>
oh flogging molly (and feeling that I am defiantly wrong on this one)

Heres a list of folk metal and power metal that are rather under appreciated in North America:

Blind Guardian
Demons and wizards
Skyclad
ElvenKing (ignore their album "The scythe")
Eluveitie (pronounced el-oo-way-tee)
Ensiferum (fun fact: Latin for "Sword bearing")
Hammerfall
Finntroll
Nightwish (Highly recommend the song "The islander")
Tyr
