Watchmen for me. That seems to be a popular choice in this thread, but I don't read enough comics to provide any alternatives that haven't also been frequently mentioned. To give you an idea, the last series I read from start to finish was the 2000+ page Akira manga a couple of years ago. (Which I'd also recommend, if you're okay with the massive and slow-building story it spans. I understand it's not for everyone.)

I recently finished reading "Planet Hulk". Everything about it was just great, I loved how Hulk developed as a character and how sorry you end up feeling for him. And it's the first comic to make me shed a tear, so it gets the top spot.

Otherwise, Watchmen, because Watchmen. Just such an incredible comic.

Anything Frank Miller done outside of Marvel too :)

I never read that, but I remember loving the animated show of it on Liquid Television back in the day.

Well the cartoon series is a fairly faithful adaptation of the first story arc. The rest of the series eventually movies on to years later and deals with the aftermath of the first arc.

If Webcomics are allowed, I'd say ErfWorld maybe.

Well, everyone said Sandman already, so I'm going with it's spinoff Lucifer. I thought it was awesome, and Lu is a hell (no pun intended) of a character.

Honorable Mentions: Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse and 8bit Theater, since we're going for webcomics as well (HADOKEN!)

Thanks for the advice all. Keep em coming!

Have finished Scalped (excellent), Y: The Last Man (decent - no idea why but I just didn't really get into it) and moving onto Saga next.

Lucifer...hah. There's another one I've been meaning to read. Well, should keep me busy this weekend at least.

Yeah, that's what I've heard, I still never actually read the comic. xD I keep meaning to go track it down and read it though.

Dude read Runaways and I guarantee you will never thought you could be into a fictional character like these kids

I also loved the Maxx. The art style was interesting and the story was different than most.

Runaways...is that the Marvel one? Had a good friend recommend this to me ages ago, may be time to give it a look actually.

It's a webcomic, but Sunstone. It's basically 50 shades of gray except the characters are more real, more likable, it explores BDSM better...ok so it's practically nothing like 50 shades of gray. It basically does it's own thing and it does them very well. Plus lesbians, that's always nice (Hetero male alert)
Oh, the heresy!! =P (Just as well you refute it half a sentence later... a few of us would've vented much vitriol!)

Apparently, once the Ally/Lisa arc is done, Alan's gonna get his backstory, so... more Marion... more of Alan's costume porn which was awesome (dunno if you've read any of the independent panels).

Anyway, on the note of Stjepan Sejic... OT: anything by Stjepan Sejic! At the moment, Death Vigil, seeing a Grim Reaper (an ageless woman who looks in her early/mid-twenties) who goes by the name of 'Bernie' head-banging while in full reaper-attire is adorable!
I agree with this so hard. If Stjepan Sejic has touched it, it tends to be awesome. His art drew me to The Darkness and now I've read every back issue and Jackie is one of my favorite characters of all time. I'm also excited that he's taking a hand in The Rat Queens for a bit. And why has no one mentioned Fables yet...

Fables is probably my favorite comic series of all time and even as it has been going for awhile now, it only seems to be getting better and better. To add to the list a bit more, anything that Brian K. Vaughan touches that isn't The Runaways. Y, awesome. Ex Machina, yes please. Saga, beautiful.

V for Vendetta. The way Detective Finch has to uncover the truth and find V in the comic is very compelling to me; along with the reason V is what he is (the substance derived from ergot). V is supernaturally aware for what I see as a realistically grounded reason, and I really like that. I thoroughly hate the film though, because most of the plot/substance is missing. It's as incomplete and pointless as if they took the force and the empire out of Star Wars and shoehorned in a message about protest and anonymous collectivism.

I really enjoy a few Web comics including Awkward Zombie, Girl Genius, and The Adventures of Dr Mcninja. For the more mainstream comics; another point for Watchmen, the new Ms Marvel series was really good, and All Star Superman was fantastic and the best way to describe why people like Superman. Also, Deadpool Bi-Annual #1. Any fans of Atop The Fourth Wall will love the return of Brute Force!

I'd have to give it to Sandman, in part for actually wrapping itself up and ending. Yes, there are enough threads that it's spawned about a thousand spin-offs, but the main story arc built and then concluded, and brilliantly. As so many other comics carry on well past their expiration dates, I have to give it to Gaiman for that.

Vaughan and Staples' Saga is a close second, and if it doesn't wear out its welcome, I might put it in first.

WARNING! VERY MUCH NSFW!
Hadn't heard of this before. It seems interesting will check it out. The last thing I saw from this artist was pretty good (Aphrodite IX) even if there's little indication of when that's going to wrap up. -_-

From me I've been pleasantly and consistently surprised by the general quality of Empowered...except for its cocking release schedule. It has actual characters and is amazingly creative in the way it takes the piss out of the super-hero genre in general.

Secret Six.
Secret Six was fantastic. I picked it up with no expectationa at all - little to no familiarity with the characters or the creative team - and it quickly became one of my all time favourites.

My pick would be Ed Brubaker's run on Catwoman - the best writing of that character ever, and a million miles above the dire New 52 series.

Honorable mentions for Sunstone and V for Vendetta.

I'm a big X-Men fan, so I'd probably have to go with God Loves Man Kills and the two Lifedeath stories.
