Just what the title says? What is, in your opinion, the best fighting game of all-time? This doesn't include beat-em-ups like Streets of Rage and Final Fight, by the way. I'm talking about actual one-on-one fighters, such as Street Fighter and Tekken.

I love Ultimate vs Capcom 3.

It's everything I love in a fighting game. It's fast paced, user friendly and just incredibly fun and competitive.

No other game would give me the chance to have X-23, Vergil, and Amaterasu in the same team :D

Sould Calibur on the Dreamcast was the best for me. It's been going steadily downhill since and every other fighting game makes my teeth itch.

I would agree with MAHVEL BABY! but I would pick MvC2. My memories of playing that on the Dreamcast was that it was just so much goddamn fun.

Mortal Kombat 2011, honestly I know I'l get laughed at by the Capcom MLG sort but that MK gave more content than any fighting game ever, a really interesting (and cheesy good) storymode, the challenge tower just so much to do! Ed Boob really knows how to reward long term fans too.

I really love the characters and aesthetic of MK too, I think pretty much all the characters got there best appearance in this game.

Also MK9 has JONNY FUCKING CAGE.

Edit: I should give Smash Bros Melee a shout too!

For me it'd be a toss up between Street Fighter II or Soul Calibur 2. Best of each series IMO.
God, I love SCII. Still, my favorite in the series. Also, Super Smash Bros Melee/ Brawl.

I'm gonna go with Soul Calibur 3 on PS2. I spent many a weekend during high school playing that literally all day long with my buds.

Guilty Gear or BlazeBlu for 2D fighters

for 3D, Bloody Roar 3, sure its a button masher, but it has something Tekken and Soulcalibur don't, a giant, killer, were-bunny.

Super Smash Bros series, obviously! Its the only fighting game that I like, after all.

And, well, I have seen a few videos of Ultimate marvel vs Capcom 3. And while its not something I would personally like to play, I find the idea of taking your favorite gaming characters (well, CAPCOM ones anyways) in a 3 people group and duke it out with whoever stands on the way to be pretty awesome.

Marvel is the way to go! I love Yipes he always has the best commentary.

Though I might check out the new persona arena game if the following stays strong.

Street Fighter 2 (Turbo for me but any one will do) nothing else comes close to having the same sort of impact this had on the fighting genre and Super is still played in tournaments today I believe.

Other worthy mentions would be:-
SF3 Third Strike (hard to get into but really deep and rewarding)
Soul Calibur (amazing fighter that has never been as good since)
Capcom vs SNK 2 (whats not to love about this game? tons of characters and great gameplay)
KoF XIII (the best KoF game for my money and arguably the best fighting game this gen its just a shame the netcode isnt great and its extremely unforgiving)

I enjoy most fighting games though TBH I got burnt out for a while but this gen I have played almost everyone released and am looking forward to TTT2 DOA5 and Persona 4 Arena especially, that is if they ever decide to actually release it over here.

Special mention to the Darkstalker series its not the greatest fighter ever (in any incarnation) but it is damn fun and has a special place in my heart I seriously hope they are doing a new game.

Blazblue. I believe it to be the best fighting game I have ever played.

It's also the only one I have ever played but I really like it and think it's the best ever so all your arguments have now been defeated by the fact that I said so. TAKE THAT PUNY MORTALS!

I always like the arcade classic Time Killers. I loved the play control and having a finisher for each character was icing on the cake. I have to admit having the excessive violence and blood was a nice touch :)

I'm going to have to say my opinion so far would be Blazblue CS2 for best fighter, its one of those rare games where I feel near perfect balance is achieved. The worst MU in the game is 6-4 if I remember correctly.
I haven't played many 3-d fighters but I feel SC2 takes the easy gold.

I second Super Smash Brothers. It has an accessible yet hard to master (if you bother to master it at all) feel to it, as well as giving you a kind of freedom in how you approach a fight that traditional fighting games don't give you (which is usually what's best way to enter into a long combo) if only because none of the moves necessarily combo into another, and if they do it's no longer than two moves.

I also like Dissidia, the Budokai Tenkaichi games on the PS2, and a little known series called Acceleration of Suguri which mixes shmups with 2D fighting. Yeah, my tastes in fighting games lean towards the unorthodox, partly because I can't wrap my head around the fast pace and subtle nuances of traditional 2D fighters.

Best? I can't really say. My favorite however, is Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code. I love it because offers so much freedom in movement, pressure, and defence. Melty Blood just flows. It feels fantastic.

I just wish more people played it. ;_;

competitively: Soul Calibur (specifically 2 and 3, but any will do)
guilty pleasure: Mortal Kombat (9 is actually really good, love it!)
