What id like to ask is, what in your opinion are/is the best free Indie games ever made, and what makes them so brilliant?

Mine would be all of the Bay12 games and Toribash.

Pixel. Simply because he made Cave Story, and that game is quite possibly one of the best games ever, freeware or not.

I like the idea for this thread, simply because it will spread awareness for less popular indie games.

That said I looked up toribad and cave story... they look terrible.

My pick would be Braid because I loved the writing. Sorry that it is mainstream.

Sorry I am an idiot, you said free about 1000x times and I still missed it. AVA then.

I'd go for either Shattered Horizon (before it got killed by the Firepower pack) or Natural Selection 2 (is that indie? There's like 5 guys in the dev team and they have no publisher...)

I would say Columbine Massacre RPG. I mean ,no free indie game has give me a emotion as much as this game.

Another indie art game that I want to suggest but that isn't free would be The Void.

The retro graphics are much easier/cheaper/faster to make than matching today's bar. Interestingly enough, I tried looking up Toribad and the result just lead me back here.

For my list, I will add:
Ikachan- A short little run from Studio Pixel.
Under the Garden- An odd little survival sim.
Final Vision- A short game paying heavy homage to the Final Fantasy series.
Grid Wars- A shooter in the spirit of Geometry Wars.

Cave Story and Spelunky are my default answers here. I've heard good things about La-Mulana, too, but I honestly can't get into it because I have no idea what the fuck I'm doing and/or supposed to do. Ikachan's good, too, albeit short, and it's made by the same guy who made Cave Story.

I'd list more, but I can't remember many more (that I've actually played).

I really enjoyed Yahtzee's 1213. Fun gameplay with a powerful ending. His Chzo Mythos series is also worth checking out, as well as Art of Theft, though I couldn't finish out of frustration.

Ninja'd by the first post for Bay12. Well... just Dwarf Fortress actually. I should try his other stuff. The rest of you should try Dwarf Fortress. Why did you people let the thread sink so far? We haven't even got the succession game running yet!

(;_; and QQ and Etc.)

Very recently downloaded Nethack as well. I've yet to win even with the "Explore mode" easy play stuff. Even when I can refuse dying/wish for the best gear, the times where you can get de-leveled into having 1 HP, or are suddenly surrounded by tougher, multiplying enemies that would take hundreds of lives to hack your way through, prevent ascension. I think I just suck, but that won't stop me from trying again.

I'm not going to copy the people who are mentioning games that cost something despite the thread title. Silly people advertising Indy games you still have to pay for!
