Braid isn't free... is it?godofallu said:I like the idea for this thread, simply because it will spread awareness for less popular indie games.
That said I looked up toribad and cave story... they look terrible.
My pick would be Braid because I loved the writing. Sorry that it is mainstream.

The retro graphics are much easier/cheaper/faster to make than matching today's bar. Interestingly enough, I tried looking up Toribad and the result just lead me back here.godofallu said:That said I looked up toribad and cave story... they look terrible.
Estocavio said:What id like to ask is, what in your opinion are/is the best free Indie games ever made, and what makes them so brilliant?
Mine would be all of the Bay12 games and Toribash.
Indeed - Try Liberal Crime Squad, its similar, only with some interesting twists...Chal said:Ninja'd by the first post for Bay12. Well... just Dwarf Fortress actually. I should try his other stuff. The rest of you should try Dwarf Fortress. Why did you people let the thread sink so far? We haven't even got the succession game running yet!

Very recently downloaded Nethack as well. I've yet to win even with the "Explore mode" easy play stuff. Even when I can refuse dying/wish for the best gear, the times where you can get de-leveled into having 1 HP, or are suddenly surrounded by tougher, multiplying enemies that would take hundreds of lives to hack your way through, prevent ascension. I think I just suck, but that won't stop me from trying again.
I'm not going to copy the people who are mentioning games that cost something despite the thread title. Silly people advertising Indy games you still have to pay for!
