Well shit... i just noticed the "free" part of the title. ... i got nothing but if you want a good non free indie then try Beat Hazard and Miner Dig Deep. Both fun and have extreme replay value becuase they technically dont end. WAIT what about those free arcade flash games people make like Fancy Pants Adventure, do those count?

In hindsight i should have just made it 'Indie Games' overall, rather than just free ones. It would have had much more discussion value, though only in this context. In any case, flashgames do count, since although browser based, they are games and theyre made by Indies, so... yes.

SimuTrans. Open-source Transport Tycoon-style game---if you like non-violent simulations as much as I do (and I LOVE non-violent simulations), you'll be in heaven.

Also consider OpenTTD.

My pick would be Braid because I loved the writing. Sorry that it is mainstream.
Actually, Braid costs money. And I haven't really played many, so I'll say Alien Swarm.

There are a lot of RPGmaker games out there that are really good.

Sadly, some of them are never finished,or lost forever.

Indeed - Mainly of course since theyre mostly made by very small groups, if not one person.

Eternal Daughter is a truly enjoyable platformer with great art and music. It's plays a bit like Metroid, with the gathering of items and abilities. It can be quite challenging from time to time as well.

I also remember a pretty nice RPG similar to Final Fantasy, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called. I think the first quest was to find a cat in a cave, which led to fighting a griffin. Anyone have any clue what I'm talking about?

EDIT: Found it, Last Scenario is the name! http://site.scfworks.com/?page_id=9

Cave Story, Spirit Engine 2, DF and a variety of roguelikes all come close. Eversion is rather neat, too.

First place, though? Iji. Very definitely Iji.

I would say Columbine Massacre RPG. I mean ,no free indie game has give me a emotion as much as this game.

Another indie art game that I want to suggest but that isn't free would be The Void.
yeah columbine was really intense

and i can remember vaguely a few mods that were so groundbreakingly changing the games that you can call them kind of completely new indie games. such as changing a shooter into an rts or even turn based strategy
