Everything I was planning on naming was already listed, probably because more people know about them than we think, we just don't hear people talking about them. I must list something, so: Breath of Fire 2 for the SNES.

Dragon Force for the Sega Saturn,

Bioforge for PC

Beyond Good & Evil for Xbox

B.A.T. 2 for PC, this one was really ahead of its time, if you don't know about it, it definetly worth a look

and I'm surprised about how few people actually played Jagged Alliance.

Recently, I would go with ChromeHounds.

Otogi series has been quoted already, and I have to say it really is a unique game, I loved both.

Team Buddies

When stacking crates can earn you a tank, and people are shouting cock at you in a thick Scottish accent you cant really go wrong. Nothing but pure genius in my opinion.

Company of Heroes.

One of the greatest and most unique RTS games ever made. Got great review scores and IGN has just recently put it on their list of best PC games.

Yet no one has ever heard of it. :(

Seems to prove that if you don't market your game a lot, it will fail no matter how good it is.
I used to play CoH with my friends over lan for a long time. It was one of the top games in local lanparties too!

Stronghold 1, + Stronghold 1:Crusaders
Such an awesome and "Free" strategic concept, its a shame the Stronghold2 screwed it up. :/

Now for my contribution:

Flatspace 2: The Rise of the Scarrid

The game is open-ended spaceshooter what mixes various elements from older games.

Battles Of Norghan

It's a fantasy turn-based strategy game where you own team of "gladiators".

Iter Vehemens ad Necem aka IVAN

It's rogue-like!

Insane aka. 1nsane

Racing game from Invictus! It's still very much fun after all these years.

Dreamfall - The Longest Journey

and some jap-shooter (cant remamber it´s name, came out to pc in mid or late 90´s) where you run around in a city in big mechrobots or on foot and blast your enemys away
Shogo M.A.D is probably the mech game you're thinking of

...Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, It's a really fun beat'em up
this was the bane of all fallout games before and since, the story made no sense and it used the crappy game mechanics that have been copied and pasted into many other games most notably champions of norrath and the crappy ps2 baldurs gate ripoofs. this is a terrible choice and i penalize 50 of your internetz

Not trying to be a douche but wasn't wild arms on PS? Love that series just never knew they had a snes one too. If ur right im gonna have to find that somewhere. ANyway, since it's pretty hard to slip one past the escapist...my ot game would prob be....Zero Divide. (Robot fighting game) Great music, actual body dmg and one of my fav fighters of all time. Oh or dark wizard for sega cd. Pure epicness.

Just Cause. The sequel, coming out next year, is getting some coverage, but everyone seems to have forgotten the awesome original.

A fun little online flash game called Robot Dinosaurs that Shoot Lasers When They Roar
That game was funny.

X-Com

At least no one I know knows what those games are.

Also, Heretic.
I loved Heretic. Nothin' better than hitting pterodactyls with a quarterstaff.

Wasteland [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasteland_%28video_game%29]
Fallout was an Unofficial Sequel to Wasteland. Known amongst hardcore Fallout fans and thats about it.

Elite [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_%28video_game%29]
The first Space Sim, and was based off the Traveler universe

Dune II: Battle for Arrakis [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_II]
A little known game that invented the RTS genre as we know it today, Blizzard borrowed HEAVILY from Westwood studios Battle for Arrakis, when they created Warcraft.

While not an entirely "unknown" game, its importance is often understated because it was a licensed title.

Dreamweb [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamweb]

Banned in several country's, Dreamweb was one of the first games to treat its players like adults. With themes of sex, violence, murder and morality, interwoven into a complex and detailed plot that truly challenged its players perception of good and evil, with a truly shocking ending.

Not sure if this was posted, but One Must Fall 2097. Its pretty much Street Fighter with robots instead. Found this game again yesterday, I feel like I am eight again. If you would like to play the game is now free to download and quite possibly you will need dosbox to run it.
