Rare (pre-Microsoft)
Bungie - Marty O'Donnell (before the rock-ification in Halo 2 and the generic sound of 3)
Jeehun Hwang - especially his work in MechWarrior 2
Retro Studios - specifically their work in the Metroid Prime series

There are others, but five will suffice for now.

Vice City, the best soundtrack for a game ever

Good, but a little cheating considering it's just great tracks from the 80s.

Best Original I'd have to give to Diablo/Diablo 2.

I absolutely LOVED the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack. It is by far my number 1 as favorites go. Number 2 would have to be Kingdom Hearts 2.

Tie between Cave Story and HL2.

HL2 has a truly immersive (can't spell) atmosphere and the music (what little of it there is) adds so much to the experience.

Cave Story, the game made by a one man team over five years, totally outclasses HL2 in terms of musical quality. 30 odd chiptune songs that I have sitting on my phone to listen to and be reminded of the most enjoyable game I have ever played.

Ok so it's not a tie.

Cave Story wins.

This soundtrack was done by Jeremy Soule. You know, that guy who has done music for every Western RPG ever made.

His music kinda got boring after awhile.

Now that people mention it, I would say Shadow of the Colossus and of course, Kingdom Hearts.

Bioshock and Fallout are amazing as well for atmosphere!

I've been replaying my Sonic 2 Battle Adventure and the music in that is EPIC
