For me it would be between so many. I just can't stand RTS games that when you go to make a unit all you get is one person. Except for AoM as I can understand it then as they would of been as powerful back then. In something like UaW however, it is unneeded and unnecessary and takes the grand scale out of it.
Try Dawn of war, you can even get it with one expansion pretty cheap, if you take space marines for example, when you build one you get 3 with a little yellow + in the command bar, right click that and you end up with about 10 guys in the squad.

Each addition costs a little money but it means you can build a second squad while making the first bigger, so you end up with alot of units very quickly. In the case of space marines you can also equip them with certain weapons, flame thrower, plasma gun (good against commanders), heavy machine gun and rocket launcher but not all the people in the squad can carry a special weapon.

You might want to give it ago, I prefer the vanilla version with winter assault 'cos after that they started putting caps on the amount of things you could build.

On topic. I would say dawn of war 'cos it had what I like about C&C and added a bit of speed to it, by not making you build one infantry at a time.

For me it was Warcraft III.

I just liked how kinda goofy it was and I enjoyed the story.

Of all time, Starcraft, no-brainer answer

- Micromanagement is far more intuitive than C&C and Red Alert (back at their primetime during the 90s)
- The 3 races are very balanced and are easily relatable.
- Awesome community support.

Starcraft is the biggest daddy of them all. What Half-Life did to FPS, Starcraft did to RTS.

Starcraft and maybe Starcraft 2, the trailers seem good, and I enjoy watching the commentaries, probably my favorite. CoH is also a good one.

Red Alert 2 sure is one heck of a game but dawn of war is also a really great game. Don't make me choose. :(

I think Warcraft 3 and possibly Starcraft (as I heard it also possess the following feature) on account of their editors, I recall playing maps which were absolutely fantastic, some of which were RTS and others which ranged to just about anything (but still played on and created by an RTS game if anyones being technical over there).

Supreme Commander (+Forged Alliance)
because it's different than most RTSs.
Such a shame that Supreme Commander 2 was a VERY bad joke.

Call me oldfashioned but for its time I'd have to go with dune 2.

Modern games I'm more of a supreme commander forged alliance kinda guy even though the game has a lot of flaws.

Either starcraft/warcraft 3, or the Age of Empires series. I like the blizzard stuff better, but they are less strategic than the Age of Empires stuff.

Atypical RTS: SC. We've all played it. It's balanced very well. It's the unofficial national sport of a country. Not only is that something no other RTS can claim, no other game can say that, period.

"Cradle to the Grave" RTS: Either Civilizations (Take your pick for which one) or Age of Empires 2 or 3. Both do it very well. Civ takes it to an absolutely massive scale. AoE keeps it within a single sitting. Games like Rise of Nations and Empire Earth get no mention for broken balance and game play.

Everything Else: Toss up- WC3 does a good job bridging genres and has 3rd party support that's unprecedented, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the Homeworld series.

Legends: Dune 2. If you've played an RTS it's got something that was first seen in Dune.

CoH is a fun game on paper, but as is the case in most of Relics games it is truly stillborn because of ridiculous balance issues and bugs that are really game breaking when you try to play it seriously in any capacity. If you don't know what I mean look no further than the bugs and balance issues associated with the three most recent, significant patches:

1) MGs changing windows instantly. Status: Bandaid fixed. Now instead of having them be able to hold off an entire army's infantry with one unit they have a set window changing timer, which is even more problematic because now you can't control the damn thing at all.

2) MGs out of buildings can't be told to manually target enemies- they'll unpack the weapon, then repack it, then unpack it against and start firing. Guess what your opponent will do?

3) Burst fire bug. Many units had an issue where if a shot hit and killed a target they'd immediately reload and fire again. Not a huge issue in most cases, now imagine a unit like the Ostwind Flak Panzer, which fires in quick succession normally and has a clip size of 6 rounds or so. Status: Not fixed! Ostwinds are the only unit it still applies to, but it's still there.

4) T17's. Used to be retarded. 3 shot clips, high accuracy, and an almost guaranteed kill against any infantry it landed on. Vet 1 granted them most of the perks their normal unit (M8) replacement had to spend munitions on to get. Broken as hell.

Status: fixed. Kind of. They still fuck up the PE.

5) British as a whole faction are broken. If they don't abuse things that are recognized almost universally as OP then they get boned by other factions abusing things in similar fashion.

6) PE as a faction are broken. Playing and winning against the PE is insanely easy, especially when their only infantry unit costs as much to reinforce as heavy, elite infantry. Oh, and a single strafing run can wipe them all out.

In recent memory I would have to say Sins of a Solar Empire, the game is stupidly expansive and dependant on how you want to play it a game could easily take an entire day if not more.

some of my old favourite have to be Starcraft/Warcraft III for the story, and C&C Generals/Tiberian Sun for the most fun I have had playing a RTS.

Although would Evil Genius count?

Well, I've played Dawn of War II, Kohan II, Impossible Creatures, Civilization IV and Medieval Conquest.

Dawn of War II: Freaking cool, it's Warhammer for crying out loud.
Kohan II: Good, but not amazing.
Impossible Creatures: I just like making Gorilla-Elephants.
Civilization IV: FANTASTIC! But way too complex for me to ever understand in the time it takes me to get bored with a agame.
Medieval Conquest: Cartoon-y, funny, quite good, but not all that fun when you get down to it, especially when you realise that growing your army of adventurers to level 40 and equipping them with the best gear was all for naught (everything gets taken away at the end of each level).

So, out of those, most likely Dawn of War II. It's simple and good fun to watch your Space Marine Force Commander rip an Ork Kommando apart.

My runners up would be Age of Empires 2, Medieval Total War 2, and of course the first Homeworld! Where's all the love for Homeworld?

The best though is Dawn of War, by a mile!

I wouldn't say any of these are the best of all time, "best" is subjective. However, my favourites would have to be:
- Dawn of War + expansions, for the close-combat kills and the awesomeness of customising your own 40K army without sinking all the money into the models.

- Company of Heroes + Opposing Fronts, for the awesome squad and cover-based gameplay. It was so immersive, and just generally well-rounded game.

- Warcraft 3 + The Frozen Throne, mainly for the flexibility of the map editor and all the resultant custom games. I think I've sunk more time into those than any other games.
