A shock of the Bio variety seems the mass opinion. I'd say it but it's a bit easy (even on survivor for me and I'm 'meh'at FPS's). There's also fallout 3 and Infamous is quite cool but again farely easy/obvious (its got a karma system)...

Max Payne, and if you like RTS then Command&Conquer. Those shitty but absolutely adorable cutscenes are it's trademark.

If you don't mind going retro, Final fantasy 7 is always a good bet.
Am playing this atm. Was really into it, then, suddenly, wasn't anymore...
As long as you've made it outside Midgar, otherwise you haven't really started the game yet :p
Of course. No I made it up the mountain, into the caves and such, then just, well, meh!
Soooo you haven't finished the first disk yet? You should really finish the first disk, *then* decide whether or not to continue.

I'll also recommend Legend of Disgaea if you enjoy JRPG's: good story, funny characters, strategic gameplay... What? Am I really the only one who likes JRPG's anymore?

The shotgun lesbian zombie wedding, for example.

The what?! Oh damnit, now I have to run through the entire wasteland, again!

As the Duckbunny said, Mafia has a great storyline and characters you really care about. If you can get over the fact that it's old you should find what you're looking for there. In all fairness the game was at the time very impressive from a technichal standpoint. I would prefer it to the new Godather games any day.

To be fair, you don't actually get to witness it - someone in the Underworld tells you about it. You have to kill her wife, and I think she's Gob's mum.

Sorry for getting your hopes up!

So pretty much the general consensus is Mass Effect?
It seems that way. Im a litlle disappointed though. The game that so many are praising failed to interest me enough to finish it.

Okami! Damn, that's a great story, it's fun, it's massive, it's everything a great game should be.

Oh, and Mass Effect.

My contribution to this thread would probably be any of the older Bioware games like Baldur's Gate, Knights of the old republic 1 and 2, maybe planescape torment (I just got it, looks promising).
KOTOR 1, Revan like a mother. KOTOR 2 was disappointing imo

Anything by Bioware, especially Planescap Torment. It's an incredibly dark world filled with a novel or two of trippy, terrifying but often chuckleworthy shiz. I have to warn people that PT has the potential to leave you very melancholy if you think about it too much.

Also give Dreamfall a pop if you like your oldschool adventure games, it's a very imaginative, intriguing world, and April Ryan is about as likeable as an adventure game protagonist can get.

First games that come to mind are: Bioshock, The Orange box, and some massive open-world RPG like Oblivion, but only because of all the back story.

You could also give the MGS games a try, but they're like an acquired taste.
The Orange Box? It's not a game, how can it have a story?

KotOR is a story I love, not particularly complicated but the twist was killer and delivered perfectly. The second one had a really good story as well, it's such a shame they were forced to rush the game by LA for an early release so it was left broken. If not I'm sure it could of rivaled the first. HL2 and it's episodes have a brilliant story and so does Mass Effect.

Mafia also had a thoroughly enjoyable story and a very likable main character.

I second everyone saying Bioshock/System Shock 2, although looking at each story there's alot of parallels between them. Anyone who's played both will know what I mean, thematically and on plot points they're very similar.

Personally I feel that SS2 had a more fleshed out story, although the two games are very different. Bioshock has a much faster pace, whereas System Shock 2 is slower, more atmospheric. It's a game that makes you feel truly alone. Bioshock is far more stylised/action packed.

Play both and make up your own mind

Bioshock is quite good.

The half life series rule in storyline.

Portal is awesome, but fractal.

one game that sucks for storyline is burnout paradise, but I reccommend it anyway. Awesome

Planescape: Torment
The writers for that really went everywhere to get what the wanted. But is's quite low on big action and fights if you want to.
