I'm looking for a game to play and I want storyline! So I'm asking you guys what do you think are the games with the best storyline ever! preferably something I could download and play but am open to anything! I'm looking for story lines where I'm gonna fall in love with a character or characters and will stay up for hours to find out what happens to them! GO!
Try a game like Deus Ex, it's massive and will easily keep your interest.

It's a bit old but the gameplay doesn't lack at all. Best. game. ever.

Planescape:Torment is excellent in this regard, the story will keep you glued to the screen hours on end. It is a bit on the older side as far as games go, though.

Then there is Deus Ex and Mass Effect for a more shooter-RPG based action.

In telling a story in any medium, the three most important things are who the characters are, what they do, and what world they live in. With that said:

Best character development: Mass Effect
Best storyline: BioShock
Best gameworld: Oblivion

Personally, this one's easy for me. I would recommend Bioshock as far as an atmospheric story game that shows you a story rather than telling it. In second place, I would put Half Life 2 for creating an alien ruled dystopian world thwarted by one Dr. Gordon Freeman. In third place I would put Fallout 3 or really any Bethesda game, for their long, deep pasts an enthralling open worlds.

If you like RTS games, I'd reccomend the Homeworld series, though I've only played Homeworld2 myself.

For a game which doesn't have playable characters or conversations, and all you control are a fleet of ships, it has one of the most epic storylines I've ever played through.
While Homeworld has an epic storyline, it's only going to be just second under Ground Control. Man that rocks, gameplay and storyline-wise!!! In fact, combine both games together, a space RTS with ground-based RTS missions... :D

EIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE!!! *head explosion*

You know, the original two Max Payne's were really well written and were still a helluva lot of fun to play.

What's with all the Mass Effect, FF7, and Bioshocks? (All good games, mind you) I thought their stories were crap. However, I loved the hell out of Dragon Quest 8 because all the characters were colorful and the voice acting was really good.

I liked The Kingdom Hearts game storyline it might be very nonsensical and wierd but the way the storyline is presented is one of my favourites of all time.

PORTAL! The dark humour, everything about it! Not just the story...EVERYTHING. It's such a WELL-MADE game. The structure of it was perfect, the length was satisfying! But yeah, Portal had a great story, it was the little subtle things that made it great!

i think the first Metal Gear Solid's story is brilliant and beautiful

why is everybody on the fence about that one?

the other games in the series are kind of ...eh save for MGS3

i thought Max Payne had one of the best stories in a game...shame about the movie

im getting into Half Life 2 although its more of how they presented and implemented the story that made the story good in my opinion

also Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill: the room both are brilliant pieces of storytelling

I absolutely adored Tales Of Vesperia's story and characters, most of the characters were deep and layered and the story progresses very quickly and naturally for a JRPG.

Mass Effect, easily. Great story, and the game is huge, so you'll be spending a metric arse-ton of time with it.
Well the game is huge but 90% of it is the same. (red planet with red sky with an underground bunker of baddies)

I actually thought it was quite tiny it took me 3 days to wrap all side quests (and then another hour for the main questline)Having said that ,the backstory (and main plot) were quite good
