If you don't mind going retro, Final fantasy 7 is always a good bet.
Am playing this atm. Was really into it, then, suddenly, wasn't anymore...
As long as you've made it outside Midgar, otherwise you haven't really started the game yet :p
Of course. No I made it up the mountain, into the caves and such, then just, well, meh!
Soooo you haven't finished the first disk yet? You should really finish the first disk, *then* decide whether or not to continue.

I'll also recommend Legend of Disgaea if you enjoy JRPG's: good story, funny characters, strategic gameplay... What? Am I really the only one who likes JRPG's anymore?
No I long ago finished the first disc! Darn Aerith, Darn it... Am near the end of the 2nd disc I believe

My contribution to this thread would probably be any of the older Bioware games like Baldur's Gate, Knights of the old republic 1 and 2, maybe planescape torment (I just got it, looks promising).
KOTOR 1, Revan like a mother. KOTOR 2 was disappointing imo
I agree, KOTOR 2 was disappointing in comparison to 1, partly because it just didn't feel as epic and in general more forgettable. IMO. That, and some parts didn't make sense to me and I got fucking tired of hearing "Malachor V, Malachor V, Malachor V" over and over and over <.< It's still a good game though.

The FF series all have great stories. Though I do think FFVIII is great as a fantasy love story. Metal Gear does the job for suspence, conspiracy and plot twists, though sometimes a little hammy. I also think the old point n click adventure games like Broken Sword and Grim Fandango have great mystery plots.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King has a great storyline and engaging characters, give that a go.

Also, the Kingdom Hearts games. If you can follow the story you'll love it and the characters are awesome by dint of being Disney and Final Fantasy characters.

Final fantasy 7...for story...reallly?!?
come on
the characters have no depth
the only thing i felt off any of them either than the intent to kill them was sephiroth radiated badassness
thats pretty much it

If you like good story, this is absolutely a no-go. If, however, you like an incredibly detailed world with lots of things to explore, by all means, this is great. The actual story line is pretty bad, but it's the fact that there is so much going on to find that the other stories make it work playing. The shotgun lesbian zombie wedding, for example.

Also, Lost Odyssey is looking to be a great game. I'm only on Disk 1, but I can't wait to continue.
I agree bout fallout...lost odyssey is good but in the end it drags out and takes to long and you get bored so quickly mind depends who you are

I still cant agree with bioshock, or pretty much any of the games listed here tbh...
yes, a good game CONCEPT but storyline and caring for the characters there is literally nil of that.
No character build up really
and mass effect...being good for story, i would say its ok but tbh i dint really think it was a good game at all i got soo bored.
The only games i have played that make you care for characters, or have a good character build up are rpgs generally. The tales series...like tales of symphonia fell in love with kratos i did hes awesome. And some final fantasy like 8/9.
Things like that

It's one of the few games where you can actually explore and find more bits of storyline. If you just follow the main plot you won't get everything.

I'm surprised that you don't want to finish the game and see how it all ends.

If you're looking for a deep, novel-worthy story, you can't beat Final Fantasy Tactics. Play the PSP version if you can. It has a better translation.

The Suikoden series is another RPG series with good storylines (especially the second one).

I do want to finish, and I will at some point, just I already know what happens in the end and school and everything I havn't had time to get myself excited about it for a while

Sucks playing a game that's over a decade old for the first time, huh? No one's careful about the spoilers because everyone assumes that it's 'common knowledge'. I've had a few games ruined for me before I could play them and now I have little interest.

One of my favorite game stories is still Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. I like the way that all the chapters tie together, how the arc fits so well with the history of the areas in which they take place, and also the references to the C'thulhu mythos.
