Raiden is by far the best sword-wielding hero ever...hahaha, no seriously, I'll go with Kratos on this one.

Well, since you claim the sword has to be made of metal, that excludes Revan. So I have to say Allen Walker, when he actually uses his sword. If Allen Walker does not count, then Sephiroth definately.

In Castlevania: Symphony of the night
Alucard with the Crissaegrim.
Anyone remeber this game and weapon?
The sword that on every swing it really swung like 10 times.
Nothing could stand up to it,making Alucard the best hero ever.
Might possibly be the most overpowered in game weapon ever lol.

Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad and all his cutlass/scimitar-wielding, roof-leaping, swashbuckling badassitude.

Guts of Berserk gets a special mention for being batshit crazy, although he is a far sight more sane than the rest of his universe, and inhumanly powerful.

Special mention for Jack Rakan of Mahou Sensei Negima, for being able to conjure swords the size of skyscrapers, at will, he is also probably the single most dangerous swordsman ever conceived.

However I have to give it to Link for being only a low-tier superhuman (he's really tough and that's about it, hell he isn't even that at the start of his games) but has the cajones to set out to kill giant monsters with only a sword, shield, and whatever item he gets in that stage, but frankly he has been shown to be able to kill them with just his bare hands, that and he can take on his world's god of POWER! With only a sword designed to kill evil and a shield which is nigh-indestructible, oh and occasionally a bow and arrow.
Oh hell yeah rakan, but then how bout asuna and setsuna? asuna's blade cancels magic (proved when negi used it against rakan)
Asuna's sword isn't proof that she is a better it's just proof that her sword is incredibly potent, same with Rakan and Guts they aren't necessarily better swordsmen they just have awesome swords, although those 2 are insanely good with swords, but they have never once walked out with the bare-minimum of what it takes to be called a sword and just fucked everyone's shit up like they were 6 year old girls, this is why Link is a better swordsman, because he goes out with a sharp piece of metal with a handle and guard and stabs things until they stop moving, huge things, wearing or being made of armor, typically with powers like being able to breathe fire or are electrically charged. Admittedly Rakan and Guts can both do this, but they are superhuman and Link isn't, which makes him the better fighter, just not as horrifyingly efficient.

I'd actually like to mention Sokka of Avatar the last Airbender but he isn't quite up to par with ANY of the swordsmen mentioned here, then again he was trained in swordsmanship in a single day and has since proven to be more dangerous in a fight than veteran warriors with years of practice and actual experience conducting war.

Gordon's crowbar totally counts. He hits people with it, it's pointy-ish, and if you disagree with him he'll pick you up and fling you into zombie bile.

But if you insist on my picking an actual sword, I'd go with Altaïr. Seriously, if you're gonna commit yourself that far (ie, cutting off one of your fingers in order to fit a knife in there), then you've got my vote.

Kratos, as he is badass, cool, and kills mythical creatures and heroes (perseus, theseus) the most brutal ways ever.

Strider:) As in old Sega, not LotR.
Don´t you mean Capcom, or are you referring to the genesis/Mega Drive game?
Yeah, the old genesis game. A guy in a cape and some sewers. It was just mindless fun:).
Fun game indeed, too bad Capcom hasn´t released a new Strider since the PSX one. But looking at what they did to "Final Fight" that is probably not a bad thing.

I'll second that one, he has a blade made of meteor.
